Etymology
[edit]Analyzable as a compound of 安心 (anshin, “peace of mind”, a term connected with Buddhism, literally “easygoing + mind”) + 立命 (ritsumei, “peace of mind”, a term connected with Confucianism, literally “upright + life”).[1][2][3][4]
The latter component 立命 (ritsumei) is only attested relatively recently, and generally in combination with 安心 (anshin), indicating that this may have been borrowed in toto from Chinese 安心立命 (ānxīnlìmìng) as a 四字熟語 (yoji jukugo, “four-character aphorism”).
First attested in a text from 1891.[1]
Pronunciation
[edit]Noun
[edit]安心立命 • (anshinritsumei)
- [from 1891] spiritual peace and enlightenment
Verb
[edit]安心立命する • (anshinritsumei suru) intransitive suru (stem 安心立命し (anshinritsumei shi), past 安心立命した (anshinritsumei shita))
- keep peace of mind via faith
- 2006, 町田宗鳳, 上田紀行, 「生きる力」としての仏教, page 166:
- そこを離れ、安心立命するためには、〈近代知〉で固められた意識に突破口をあけなければなりません。
