[edit]First attested as van des bisscopsweteringe in 1426. Compound of bisschop (“bishop”) and wetering (“drainage channel”). The element bisschop refers to Jan Van Arkel (ca. 1314-1378), the Prince-Bishop of Utrecht who initiated the construction of the channel.
