[edit]First attested as scoeten and scoten in 1299. Calque of West Frisian Aldskoat, derived in turn from a compound of Old Frisian ald (“old”) and scâta (“piece of land which juts upward”). The element âld was added to distinguish the settlement from Nieuweschoot.
