Proto-Slavic
[edit]Etymology
[edit]Formally comparable with Old Irish úas (“above”), Ancient Greek ὕψι (húpsi, “aloft”), probably from Proto-Indo-European *h₃ewps-, but with problematic long grade in Slavic. Possibly further related to the adverb *upó (“above, over”).
Compare also Proto-Slavic *vъz- (“up-, super-”), *vy- (“out-, ex-”).
