Proto-Uralic
[edit]Etymology
[edit]Often conflated with *wexe- (“to take, grasp”), but Aikio (2013) argues for two separate verbs, which are still distinct in Hungarian and Selkup, and can be reconstructed separately in Proto-Samic.
Possibly related with Proto-Indo-European *weǵʰ- (“to bring, carry”), but this is less likely with *wixe- than with *wexe- due to the vocalism. Both loaning and common origin (from alleged Indo-Uralic or Nostratic *wig-) have been proposed.
Verb
