Etymology
[edit]From Old English Uffa + -ing (“belonging to”) + tun (“town”).[1] The first element is a variant of Æffa, a king of the Angles (c. 575), attested in names such as Effingham, Abridge, and Ufford, but of uncertain origin.[2][3]
