Coffin Texts Spell 162 (Hymn to the Four Winds)

II 389a – Title

sḫm m ṯꜣww jfdw nw pt jn zj m ẖrj-nṯr

Having power over the four winds of heaven by a man in the realm of the dead.

II 389b-391b – The North Wind

rḏj.n⸗tw n⸗j nn n ṯꜣww ḫr nn n ḥwnwt

These winds have been given to me by these maidens.

mḥyt pw pẖrt ḥꜣ.w-nbwt

Such is the north-wind which circulates about the Isles,

pgꜣt ꜥwj⸗s r ḏrw tꜣwj

which opens its arms to the limits of the Two Lands

sḏrt jn.n⸗s ḫrt mry⸗s rꜥw nb

and which rests when it has brought the things which I desire daily.

ṯꜣw pw n ꜥnḫ mḥyt

The north wind is the breath of life,

rḏj.n⸗tw⸗s n⸗j ꜥnḫ⸗j jm⸗s

and what it has granted to me is that I may live by means of it.

II 391c-394a – The East Wind

rḏj.n⸗tw n⸗j nn n ṯꜣww ḫr nn n ḥwnwt

These winds have been given to me by these maidens.

jꜣbt pw wnt ptr

Such is the east-wind which opens the celestial windows;

snšt jꜣbt

the east-wind is opened

jrt wꜣt nfrt n rꜥw

and a fair path is made for Re

pr(t)⸗f jm⸗s

that he may go forth on it.

nḏr rꜥw ꜥ⸗j

Re grasps my hand

rḏj⸗f wj m sḫt⸗f tw ḥrt-tp jꜣrw

and sets me in this (green) field of his in the midst of rushes,

wn(m)⸗j jm⸗s ꜥ js ḥpw

(and) I eat it in the manner of Apis,

ꜣf⸗j jm⸗s ꜥ js stš

(and) I gorge on it in the manner of Seth.

ṯꜣw pw n ꜥnḫ jꜣbt

The east-wind is the breath of life,

rḏj.n.tw⸗s n⸗j ꜥnḫ⸗j jm⸗s

and what it has granted to me is that I may live by means of it.

II 395b-397a – The West Wind

rḏj.n⸗tw n⸗j nn n ṯꜣww ḫr nn n ḥwnwt

These winds have been given to me by these maidens.

jmntj pw sn ḥꜣ

Such is the west-wind, the brother of Ha,

msṯwt jꜣꜣw

the offspring of Iaaw,

ꜥnḫ(w) m ẖt wꜥt (n ḫprt jštj sntj) m tꜣ pn

which lives in one body, the second in this land

ṯꜣww mḥyt rsw jmntj jꜣbt

of the north, south, west and east winds.

ṯꜣw pw n ꜥnḫ jmntj

The west-wind is the breath of life,

rḏj.n⸗tw⸗s n⸗j ꜥnḫ⸗j jm⸗s

and what it has granted to me is that I may live by means of it.

II 397b-398d – The South Wind

rḏj.n⸗tw n⸗j nn n ṯꜣww ḫr nn n ḥwnwt

These winds have been given to me by these maidens.

rsw pw ṯꜣw m nḥs rswt

Such is the south-wind, a native of the Southland,

jnn mw srd ꜥnḫ

which brings water, growth and life;

rḏj.n⸗tw⸗s n⸗j ꜥnḫ⸗j jm⸗s

and what it has granted to me is that I may live by means of it.

II 399a-405b – Concluding Hymn

j.nḏ ḥr⸗ṯn fdw ṯꜣww jpw nw pt kꜣw nw pt

Hail to you, you four winds of the sky, the bulls of the sky!

ḏd⸗j n⸗k rn⸗k rn n rḏj n⸗k sn rḫ⸗j smsy⸗k

I tell you your names, the names which I give to you. I know that you were brought to birth

ḫpr rn⸗k nj msyt rmṯ nj ḫprt nṯrw

and that you came into being before men were born or the gods existed,

nj sḫtt ꜣpdw nj spḥt ngꜣw

before birds were trapped, before cattle was lassoed,

nj ꜥnnt ꜥrt(j) mꜣṯrt zꜣt nṯr ꜥꜣ

before there were bound up the jaws of Machret, daughter of the Great God,

nj jryt sꜣjr r jkw nb pt nb tꜣ

before there was created the need for any quarryman(?) of sky or earth.

dbḥ.n⸗sn m-ꜥ nb sḫmw swt pw rḏj n⸗j sn

I have requested them (sic) from the Lord of Powers, and it is he who has given them to me.

mj r⸗k r⸗k sḏꜣ⸗k ḥnꜥ⸗j ḏj⸗j mꜣ⸗k wjꜣ

Come, proceed with me, that I may cause you to see the bark,

hꜣ⸗k sqd⸗k jm⸗f nj ny⸗j

that you may go aboard it and navigate in it without me(?).

jnk jr wjꜣ⸗j ḏs⸗j

I have built my own bark,

ḏꜣy⸗j jm⸗f r sšnt

and I cross in it to the lotus-tank,

šd.kꜣ⸗j wjꜣ jm nj mḥ ḫꜣ r tpwj⸗f

and I will hew out therein a bark of 1000 cubits over all,

sqdy⸗j jm⸗f r rwd nj ḫnft

I will navigate in it to the Stairway of Baking

ḫft rꜥw sqd⸗f r rwd nj ḫnft

just as Re navigated to the Stairway of Baking,

jw t⸗j r rwtj ṯnt

and I will have bread outside Tenet.
