From Proto-Brythonic *alarkos, from Proto-Celtic *eli- (compare Irish eala (swan)), from Proto-Indo-European *h₁el- (compare Latin olor (swan), English auk, Old Swedish ala, alla (long-tailed duck), Hittite [script needed] (alilas)).
