Old Irish

[edit]From to- + ess- + ·tá. This etymology also explains the appearances of stems with -bi-, with bíid often being a suppletion source for several compounds from the conjunct root ·tá, such as at·tá (“to be”). The present-tense forms with n show a confusion with benaid (“to strike”).
