[edit]Inherited from Ottoman Turkish حكم (ḥakem, “an arbitrator, referee, also an umpire”),[1][2] from Arabic حَكَم (ḥakam, “judge, arbitrator, commander”), verbal noun of حَكَمَ (ḥakama, “to exercise authority, to command, to bid, to rule”).[3]
