[edit]Learned borrowing from Latin mechanicus (“of or belonging to machines”), itself borrowed from Ancient Greek μηχανικός (mēkhanikós, “pertaining to machines”), from μηχανή (mēkhanḗ, “a machine, contrivance”) (whence machine).
