Finnish
[edit]Pronunciation
[edit]Etymology 1
[edit]According to Aikio (2020), possibly from Proto-Finnic *satu, derived from an unattested verb *sate- + -u, related to Southern Sami soetedh (“to tell something frightening”) and Southern Sami soete (“frightening story”). Alternatively, possibly an obscure derivation from sattua; alternatively derived from sataa, in which case the original meaning was "fall" and the semantic development would be comparable to that of German Fall (“case”) (< fallen (“to fall”)).
Noun
[edit]satu
- fairy tale
- tale (idle story)
- fable (fictitious narrative intended to enforce some useful truth or precept)
