Borrowed from German Zigeuner, from Greek τσιγγάνος (tsingános), older Ἀθίγγανος (Athínganos), originally the name of a Christian sect. A compound of ἀ- (a-, un-) +‎ θιγγάνω (thingánō, to touch).
