[edit]From Proto-Germanic *tabną, ultimately from the Proto-Indo-European root *deh₂p-. Cognate with Old Armenian տաւն (tawn, “feast”), Latin daps (“sacrificial feast”), Ancient Greek δαπάνη (dapánē, “expenditure”), δάπτω (dáptō, “I devour”).
