Stéphane Colin has been a Professor at INSA since 2002 and currently leads the Modeling of Mechanical Systems and Microsystems Group of the Clément Ader Institute. He is a specialist in Microfluidics and is particularly interested in gas microflows and their applications. He is the author of several books on microfluidics and chairs the series of “Microfluidics” international conferences he initiated in 2008.

A comparative study between computational and experimental results for pressure-driven binary gas... more A comparative study between computational and experimental results for pressure-driven binary gas flows through long microchannels is performed. The theoretical formulation is based on the McCormack kinetic model and the computational results are valid in the whole range of the Knudsen number. Diffusion effects are taken into consideration. The experimental work is based on the Constant Volume Method, and the results are in the slip and transition regime. Using both approaches, the molar flow rates of the HeAr gas mixture flowing through a rectangular microchannel are estimated for a wide range of pressure drops between the upstream and downstream reservoirs and several mixture concentrations varying from pure He to pure Ar. In all cases, a very good agreement is found, within the margins of the introduced modeling and measurement uncertainties. In addition, computational results for the pressure and concentration distributions along the channel are provided. As far as the authors are aware of, this is the first detailed and complete comparative study between theory and experiment for gaseous flows through long microchannels in the case of binary mixtures. A new experimental setup for flow rate measurement of gases through microsystems is presented. It... more A new experimental setup for flow rate measurement of gases through microsystems is presented. Its principle is based on two complementary techniques, called droplet tracking method and constant-volume method. Experimental data on helium and argon isothermal flows through rectangular microchannels are presented and compared with computational results based on a continuum model with second-order boundary conditions and on the linearized kinetic BGK equation. A very good agreement is found between theory and experiment for both gases, assuming purely diffuse accommodation at the walls. Also, some experimental data for a binary mixture of monatomic gases are presented and compared with kinetic theory based on the McCormack model.

First, the valve orifices model is derived from the ISO standard as a function of the orifice opening. Then the gas chamber behaviour is modelled using a rigorous theoretical development of conservation laws. Consequently, no assumption is required concerning the evolution of the gas only being considered as ideal. A fix parameter convective model is found acceptable to define the heat exchange between the gas and the jack environment. Finally, a representation model of the internal jack friction is proposed including the influence of pressure and working quadrant on viscous and Coulomb effects. The simulation structure is then presented and the model is validated using a step by step procedure.

Up to date, inertial migration of particles in microflows has demonstrated a great potential for ... more Up to date, inertial migration of particles in microflows has demonstrated a great potential for a wide range of applications. In particular, this phenomenon is used to achieve particle separation or sorting in a suspension. Recent works reported that the focusing mode of particles can be modified in a polydisperse suspension. Nevertheless, the impact of the particle sizes in a mixture on their inertial migration has been rarely studied up to now. Thus, we have investigated in this work the influence of bidispersity on the lateral migration of the particles towards equilibrium positions and on their longitudinal ordering into trains. Different changes in the particles behavior were observed when the ratio between the particle sizes (dp1/dp2) varied from 1.64 to 4.58.

Portability and low energy consumption are of a great importance for on-site real time monitoring... more Portability and low energy consumption are of a great importance for on-site real time monitoring of indoor air quality. Therefore, the aim of this work is to miniaturize one of the bulkiest elements consuming the highest energy in analytical devices, i.e. a gas chromatography microcolumn. In this study, we report the design and fabrication on silicon wafers of three gas chromatography microcolumns of 1, 2 and 3-m long with integrated microheaters and temperature sensors. In a first stage, the microcolumn and the temperature control system have been developed separately to enable a faster optimization. The heating system has been tested and it allowed the device to reach 200 °C in 55 s with a power consumption of 13.8 W. A specific packaging has been designed to provide reliable fluidic connections to the MEMS-based columns. In a second stage, the latter will be integrated in a laboratory prototype to test their suitability for VOC separation.

The inertial migration of particles in square channel flows at the micro-scale has been deeply in... more The inertial migration of particles in square channel flows at the micro-scale has been deeply investigated in the last two decades. The well-known four equilibrium positions are located near the center of each channel face at moderate Reynolds numbers . More recently, Miura et al. revealed experimentally the presence of eight equilibrium positions in millimetric square channels for Reynolds numbers higher than 250. The aim of the present work is to extend these results obtained at millimeter scale to the micrometer scale. To this end, in situ visualization of particles flowing in square micro-channels at Reynolds numbers ranging from 5 to 300 have been conducted and analyzed.
