Inork ezin dio bultza egin ibaiari izeneko proiektua 2015ean hasi zen, Bilbao Arteko egonaldian, Uraren Katastroak zuela izenburu. Etengabe garatzen
ari den proiektu horrek arro hidrografikoak jartzen ditu ikusgai; zertarako eta,
nolabait, ibai baten formaren bidez denbora neurtzeko. Argitalpen honek munduko bi leku ondo bereizitan egindako bi proiektu hartzen ditu: Espainiako
Bilbon eta Txileko Santiagon. Ibai banak zeharkatzen dituzte bata eta bestea,
ur-emari handiagoz edo txikiagoz: Bilboko ibaiadarrak eta Maipo ibaiak. Bi
ibaien azterketa formala zeramikazko kanaltxoen bidez irudikatu da; materialaren ezaugarriek eman dute grabitate-pendiza.
Formaren nolakoak emandako denboratasuna duten bi klepsidra bezala,
uraren ibilbide diren bi zirkuitu hauek bi arro hidrografikoren errepresentazio
dira, eskalan eginak. Bi piezek denbora-neurri bat ezartzen dute, urak toskazko
hodi-sistema batean barrena erortzean ibilbidea osatzeko behar duen denborak
emana. Hodi-sistema eskuz egina da, zenbait moldez baliatuta. Zirkuituan zehar
Zirkuitu bakoitza
elikatzeko dagoen litro kopuruak erabakitzen du zenbat denbora behar duen
urak kanaltxoaren barruan zehar erortzeko; pieza bakoitza ibaitxo baten irudira
dabil, ur-erreserba jakin batez, zeina bere izaerari dagozkion baldintzek agor
tzen baitute: grabitateak, abiadurak eta lurruntzeak.
el agua, los fluidos, el fuego y las formas. Observar la cada de las cosas es entender a pequea escala porque somos como somos y el mundo que habitamos;

Inork ezin dio bultza egin ibaiari erakuskariak grabitate-indarra aztertzen
du, gauzen erorketaren eta ordenaren baldintza nagusi den aldetik, gauza guztiei ematen baitie denboratasun jakin bat, Lurrean eta Unibertsoan. Denborari bultza egiterik edo denbora geldiarazterik ez dagoenez, proiektuak galdera
hori pausatzen du, uraren erorketaren eta ingurune fabrikatu batetik zehar jaistearen bidez; xedea gauzen ordena begiestea, behatzea eta ulertzea da, alderdi
egunerokoenetik.
Denbora igaro egiten da, lurrundu, eta beste ziklo batez hasten da, ezinbestean gure grabitate-indarraren mende dagoen ziklo batez. Grabitate-indarra
pentsatzea, pentsatzea zer lotura duen denborarekin, da behin eta berriz gogoratzea ezen eguzki-sistema baten baitakoak garela, eta sistema horrek, biraka dabilelarik, aldatu edo baldintzatu egiten dituela naturako zenbait elementu, hala
nola ura, fluidoak, sua eta formak. Gauzak nola erortzen diren begiestea zera
da, eskala txikian ulertzea zergatik garen garen bezalakoak, ulertzea bizileku dugun mundua. Ura indar magnetiko batek eta erakarmen batek baldintzatutako
elementu gisa ulertzea zera ulertzea da, ikusle hutsak garela bultza egin ezin
diogun unibertso batean.

hecho a mano, laboriosamente.
tambin sociales, econmicas y culturales.
Flotamos
en este ro del tiempo.

-ur-sistemaJakinekoa da ura isurbide eta sistema dela aldi berean, nahiz eta iturria
zabaltzen dugunean ez dugun ohiturarik nondik datorren galdetzeko. Nahikoa
da urik ez irtetea, dagoeneko naturaltzat duguna anomalia bilaka dadin. Ez dago
ura baliabide bilakatzea baino gauza ez-naturalagorik. Isurbidearen eta sistemaren arteko desberdintasuna, ordea, dezentekoa da: isurbidea bide bat edo
tresna bat da, estalita egon ohi den kanal bat, urari nahiz bestelako gai likido
edo solidoei bide egiteko balio duena; sistema bat, berriz, lur azpiko ondasunen
eta gizakiek eraldaturiko ubide artifizialen sare oso bati euskarria ematen dioten
azpiegituren, lege- eta ekonomia- gailuen batura da. Sistema gisa, urak osotasun bat eratzen du, etengabe berritzen den ziklo amaiezin bat, zeinaren miaketa
historikoak naturarekiko harremanen jatorrietara bideratuko baikintuzke. An
tzinatetik, konstante bat izan da ura menderatzea eta kontrolatzea: akuifero eta
elurtegietan pilatzea, urtegiak eta ezpondak eraikitzea, ibai eta aintziretako nabigazioa, eta abar. Itsasoari dagokionez, haren dimentsio mitiko eta gobernagaitza
historian zehar izan diren produkzio moduen eraldaketa handien sorburu da,
oraintxe gauden fase honetaraino ailegatu arte, hots, kapitalismo berantiarraren
fasera arte.
Hiri aurremoderno ugari uraren banaketa erradialaren, kanaleratzearen
eta topografiaren erabileraren arabera antolatu ziren, ura jariatzeko eta hartara hiri-bazterrak ureztatzeko. Hiri modernoetan, ordea, zenbat eta ikusezinago
ur-sistema, hainbat handiagoa urarekiko mendekotasuna. Lotura sendoa dago
ikus daitekeenaren eta ezkutukoaren artean. Hala, ibaiak, aintzirak eta hirietako
hondartzak estolderia, saneamendu eta ur edangarriaren banaketaren alderdi
ikusgarria dira. Uraren arrastoari jarraitzea ur-sisteman barneratzea da (mundu-sistema nozio teorikoaren translazio bat da ur-sistema nozioa; mundu-sistema
Lurraren historian zehar izan diren harreman sozial, politiko eta ekonomikoen multzoa litzateke). Ur-sistema arakatzeak ez du zerikusirik ura radiestesiaren
zientzia osatzen duten hagaxka eta penduluen bitartez bilatzeko metodoarekin,
zeina antzina-antzinako garaietatik erabili baita. Uraren funtzioak eta erabilerak
arakatzea, bilatzea eta ikertzea xaman baten jarduera edo jarduera zientifikoa
izan daiteke, muturreko bi adibide eskaintzearren. Baina funtzio kognitibo bat
ere izan dezake eta, horrenbestez, izan daiteke arte-jarduera bat ere, artearen
funtzioetariko bat kartografia kognitiboak marraztea baita. Claudia Mllerren
artegintza izaera poetiko indartsuko mapa kognitibo manufakturatu, espekulatibo, ameslariak egitean datza gaur egun. Saiakera edo zirriborro kontzeptual,
artistiko bat, eskuz egina, zeinaren teknika gauzatze-prozesuan bertan asmatzen
eta berrasmatzen baita.
14
Mllerrek BilbaoArteko egonaldian garaturiko Uraren Katastroak proiektuan (2015-2016), Bilbo hiriaren arro hidrografikoa aztertzen da. Bilboko
eta inguruetako uren azterketan, zenbait formatu erabili ditu: marrazkiak, bideo laburrak, argazkiak eta, azkenik, instalazio bat, non eskultura batek zentzua
ematen baitio proiektu osoari. Ura, hemen, lurraldearen ikerketa da. Gailu eta
bitartekotza.
Instalazio horretan, Arduino erako mekanismo bat izateaz gainera, hots,
hardware erabilerraz bat, ura punpatzen eta biltzen duena, artistak arreta berezia eskaini die egikeraren xehetasunei. Plastikozko hoditxoen molde arruntak,
iturgintzan erabili ohi direnak bezalakoak, baina oraingoan zeramikazkoak, ko
brez batuta eta mihiztatuta daude. Lanak, bere osoan, eskuz eta lan handia hartuz egina dirudi. Eskulangintza-arrasto horiek dira instalazioari jostailu handi
baten itxura ematen diotenak, eredu edo maketa baten eta arkitektura txiki baten arteko erdibidean. Eroale bilakaturiko ubide horrek meandro baten forma
du, bere ahur-ganbilekin, hots, Bilboko itsasadarrak La Pea auzotik pasatzean hartzen duen forma. Meandering hitz ingelesak berak ere bide bat zeharka inprobisatzeko edo marratzeko aukera iradokitzen du. Artelanaren beraren
metafora betea; izan ere, artelanean asmoak eta emaitzak hainbat aldagai eta
ziurgabetasun-printzipiori lotuta daude ia beti. Horixe iradoki nahi dut hemen:
Claudia Mllerren artegintza bera, hain ausarta eta tematia bere gaia eta jorratu
beharreko edukiak hautatzean, meanderingaren zeharkakotasun horrek janzten
duela.
Hiri gutxik eskain ziezaioketen artistari Bilbok bezalako paisaiarik bere
ikerketarako, hiria ibaiaren ibilbidean oinarriturik eraikia baita, erdigune historikoa BilbaoArtetik metro gutxitara duela. Zehatzago, San Anton elizan, non
eliza egin baino lehen ibai-merkantzien biltegi bat egon baitzen (1300. urte
aldera) bai eta defentsarako harresi bat ere, uholdeen kontrako euskarri zena.
Itsasaldiek Bilboko itsasadarrean duten eraginak hiriko bizitzaren erdigune bihurtu dute ibilgua; itsasadarraren eta itsasoaren arteko loturaren bilakaerak eta
garapenak gauzatu du hiriaren historia. Bilbo zaharra eta Bilbo berria, eta batetik besterako historian zehar, ura osotasun eta sistema gisa. Irudi luke Uraren
katastroa lana ere ibai bati buruzko arrazoi ontologikoez galdezka ari dela. Hau
zer da, emaria ala ibaia? Edo hobeto esanda, noiz has gaitezke emaria ibaitzat
hartzen? Emari esatean, denbora-unitate batean eta norabide jakin batean ga
rraiatzen den gai jariakor baten kantitatea ulertzen dugu, eta, dakigunez, batez
ere urarekin erabili ohi da kontzeptu hori. Ibaiari dagozkionak ez dira geologiaren arlokoak bakarrik; sozialak, ekonomikoak eta kulturalak ere badira.
Bilbon egonaldia egin ondoren, Claudia Mllerrek beste ur-katastro batean jardun du, Txilen, Santiago hiriko hegoaldea zeharkatzen duen ibaiaren in15
Ibaiari Maipo deritzo, eta emaria ematen dioten ibaiadar ugarik osatua da. Gaur
egun, eskualde hartan badira zenbait gatazka; izan ere, Txileko ibai asko ur bildu
edo presa ari dira bihurtzen. Meatzaritza eta lehen sektoreko beste industria ba
tzuk kokatu direlako adierazle argia da hori. Jalkinen erauzketak ibaiaren hondoa higatzen du, eta, horren ondorioz, desertizazioa bizkortzen da. Alto Maipoko
hidroelektrikok hartzen baitute parte. Mllerren ikerketa horietako batzuk ikus
daitezke orain hizpide dugun erakusketa honetan. Uragatiko liskarrak, uraren
ugariagatik edo eskasiagatik, etengabeak dira lurralde berriak kapitalaren interesen kontrolpean geratzen direnean. Oso aspaldikoa ez den film batek, Jia
Zhangke-ren Natura hilak (Still Life, 2006), kontatzen du nola hainbat pertsonak
beren sorterritik alde egin behar duten, uraren kontrako babes gisako harresi
bat eraikitzeko Hiru Arroiletako Presa izenekoan, Txinan, Yangzi ibaian, zeina
munduko presarik handiena baita. Urak gora egin ahala, hiri osoak geratzen dira
urpean, eta ondotik han diren eraikinen eraiste-lanak datoz. Natura hila filma
gaur egun Txinan dituzten lan-baldintzez ari da, eta errora jotzen duten galderak egiten ditu urak atzean utzitako memoriari buruz. Historia uraren bidez
ezabatzeko gaitasuna (ez al dugu ba erabiltzen oroimen-garbiketa esamoldea?)
etengabe berritzeko duen ahalmenaren parekoa da. Ura dabilenean, denbora
berritu egiten da, eta, horrekin batera, modu berriz hautematen ditugu iragana
eta denboraren oroitzapena
-denboraren ibaia
Claudia Mllerren ezaugarri bat da, halaber, urari buruzko esplorazio
sozial, kultural eta baita politiko honek alderdi poetiko eta subjektiboa izatea.
Hurbilpen horren bizitasun tematiak denboraren neurri bihurtzen du ura, grabitatearen, ilargiaren, itsasaldien eta eguzkiaren eraginen bitartez, Mllerren artelanen gai nagusian. Grabitatearen efektuek markaturiko erritmo biologikoak,
gaur egun, erlojuak hirian ezartzen duen kadentzia eta gau-egunen erritmo zirkadianoa dira, kontsumo-denbora eta 24/7 lana ezartzeak nahastu ondoren. Nola
zaharberritu urak norbanakoaren gorputzean eta gorputz kolektiboan utzitako
memoria? Urak, denbora-neurri gisa, gorputzera garamatza, gorputza egunaren
eta gauaren ordutegien gorabehera aldikakoen errezeptore sentibera den aldetik: denbora-espazioen azelerazioa. Zer esan egunarekin eta gauarekin lotutako
amets-gaitasunez? Ernst Bloch-ek, itxaropenaren filosofoak, eguneko ametsen

-water-systemThe fact that water is both a conduit and a system at the same time is
something we all know, even if we rarely stop to think about where it comes
from when we turn on the tap. However, the moment it stops flowing, what we
have come to accept as normal suddenly becomes an anomaly. There is nothing
less natural than the transformation of water into a resource. But the difference between conduit and system is an important one: a conduit is a pathway
or instrument, usually a covered channel through which water or other liquid
or solid substances pass; a system, on the other hand, is collection of infrastructures and legal and economic provisions that support a whole network of
underground pathways and artificial watercourses that have been modified by
humans. Water as a system makes up a whole, an endless cycle which ceaselessly renews itself and whose historical evolution dates back to the very origins of
mankinds relationship with nature. Whether by storing it in aquifers and ice
stores, building dams and reservoirs or navigating rivers and lakes, from earliest antiquity humans have constantly striven to control and dominate water.
And as for the sea, its mythical and indomitable nature was at the heart of many
of the large-scale transformations that have taken place in our production and
manufacturing methods throughout history, right up to the present-day late
capitalist era.
The urban environments of many pre-modern cities were organised
around the radial distribution of water, the digging of channels and the use
of local topography to carry water all the way out to their limits. In modern
cities, however, the invisibility of water as a system is matched only by our utter dependence on it. There is a close link between what is visible and what is
hidden. Thus, urban rivers, lakes and beaches are the visible face of a whole
system of hidden infrastructures designed to distribute clean drinking water
and eliminate sewage. Tracking the path followed by the water that goes down
our drains means venturing into the belly of a water-system (a variation on the
world-systems theory, which postulates that the world is basically a collection
of social, political and economic relations established throughout the course
of the planets history). Exploring the water-system is radically different from
the age-old rod or pendulum water dowsing methods that fall within the field
of radiesthesia. Delving into and rooting around in the functions and uses of
water is an activity that can be either shamanic or scientific, to give two extreme
examples. However, it can also take on a cognitive function, and can therefore be
an artistic undertaking, since drawing up cognitive maps is one of the functions
of art. The work of Claudia Mller focuses on the compilation of manufactured,
speculative and dream-like cognitive maps with a strong poetic charge. The re18
sult is an artistic, home-grown, conceptual draft, the technique of which is reinvented during the creative process itself.
The project entitled Catastros del agua (Water Cadastres) (2015-2016),
which was completed by Mller during her residency in BilbaoArte, is an analysis of the city of Bilbaos water basin. It is a study of the water in the city and
the surrounding area in a range of different formats, including drawings, short
videos and photographs, which give rise to an installation in which a sculptural
structure gives meaning to the whole project. Here, water is a means of studying
the region. It is both device and mediation.
In this installation, in addition to an Arduino-type board that is basically an easy-to-use hardware device that pumps and collects water, the artist has
also striven to highlight the whole issue of our water bill. Normal plastic gutter
moulds, like those commonly used in plumbing, are here made of ceramic and
are jointed together with copper unions. The end result gives the impression of
having been meticulously assembled by hand. It is these craft-like details that
give the installation an air of being a giant toy, a hybrid structure half way between a model or mock-up and a Lilliputian architectural structure. The shape
of this water-course-turned-conduit reproduces the meandering, concave and
convex path taken by the Bilbao Estuary as it winds its way through the La Pea
neighbourhood. The very meaning of the word meandering suggests the speculative possibility of improvisation, or of tracing a route in an indirect manner. A
powerful metaphor of the artistic process itself, in which intentions and results
are almost always subject to a whole range of different variables and uncertainty
principles. I suggest here that Claudia Mllers own artistic activity, which is so
decisive and obstinate in its selection of the theme and content to be dealt with,
is imbued with this cross-cutting quality we can call meandering.
Few cities can offer an artist a scenario like that of Bilbao for their research. Founded along the course of its estuary and with its historic epicentre
located just a few feet from BilbaoArte in San Antn Church, which is built on
the site of an old river freight warehouse dating from around 1300, and once
served as both a defensive wall and as a floodwall. The influence of the tides on
the Bilbao Estuary has turned this watercourse into the living heart of the city,
whose history is characterised by the evolution and development of the link
between the river and the sea. The old and new cities coexist side by side, but
throughout their history water is present as both totality and system. Catastros
del agua seems also to question the ontology of rivers. Are they water volume or
river? Or to put it another way, when does a volume of flowing water become a
river? By volume we understand the quantity of fluid material transported per
unit of time in a specific direction, and as we know, it is a term mainly used in
19
connection with water. However, the implications of the term river are not just
geological, but rather social, economic and cultural also.
After her residency in Bilbao, Claudia Mller worked on another water
cadastre with the eloquent title Nadie puede empujar el ro (No one can push the
river) (2016), based around the river that crosses the southern part of Santiago de Chile. The River Maipo is formed by the confluence of many tributaries
which greatly increase its volume. The region is the site of a number of different
conflicts, since many rivers in Chile are currently being dammed as a direct
consequence of increased mining activity and the establishment of other primary industries, in which the extraction of sediments erode the riverbed, thus
accelerating the process of desertification. The so-called Alto Maipo project is a
source of one of these environmental conflicts, involving, on this occasion, hydropower companies. Some of the results of Mllers research will be on display
at this exhibition. Disputes over water, due to either its abundance or scarcity,
are constant factors in the establishment of new territorial areas controlled by
the interests of private capital. A recent film, Still Life (2006) by Jia Zhangke,
tells the story of people forced to leave their town and join the workforce tasked
with constructing a water protection barrier in the Three Gorges Dam along
the course of the Yangtze River in China. The dam is the largest of its kind in
the world, and the rise in water levels caused by its construction caused entire
towns to be flooded and destroyed. Still Lift is a film which talks about the working conditions in modern-day China, and which radically questions the memory
left behind by water. Waters ability to wipe out history (the term brain washing
is no coincidence) is proportional only to its capacity for perpetual renovation.
When water flows time is renewed and we gain a new perspective of the past
and its memory.
Typically of Claudia Mllers work, this social, cultural and political exploration of water is also accompanied by a poetic, subjective dimension. The
persistent vitality of this approach presents water as a measurement of time,
through the effects of gravity, the moon, the tides and the sun a constant
theme in the artists work. The biological rhythms engendered by the effects of
gravity are, today, the urban cadence of our watches and the circadian rhythm
of night and day that are confounded by the emergence of consumer time and
24/7 work. How can we restore the memory left behind by water inside our
individual and collective bodies? Water as a measurement of time transports
