PAST PROGRESSIVE
We use the past progressive to talk a long action in the past. Here you have the uses of this tense: USE 1
Interrupted Action in the Past

Use the Past Continuous to indicate that a longer action in the past was interrupted. The interruption is usually a shorter action
in the Simple Past. Remember this can be a real interruption or just an interruption in time.

Examples:

∙ I was watching TV when she called.

∙ While we were having the picnic, it started to rain.

∙ I was listening to my iPod, so I didn't hear the fire alarm.

∙ While John was sleeping last night, someone stole his car.

∙ A: What were you doing when you broke your leg?

B: I was snowboarding.

USE 2 Specific Time as an Interruption

In USE 1, described above, the Past Continuous is interrupted by a shorter action in the Simple Past. However, you can also
use a specific time as an interruption.

Examples:

∙ Last night at 6 PM, I was eating dinner.

∙ At midnight, we were still driving through the desert.

∙ Yesterday at this time, I was sitting at my desk at work.

IMPORTANT
In the Simple Past, a specific time is used to show when an action began or finished. In the Past Continuous, a specific time
only interrupts the action.
Examples:
∙ Last night at 6 PM, I ate dinner.
I started eating at 6 PM.
∙ Last night at 6 PM, I was eating dinner.
I started earlier; and at 6 PM, I was in the process of eating dinner.
USE 3 Parallel Actions
When you use the Past Continuous with two actions in the same sentence, it expresses the idea that both actions were
happening at the same time. The actions are parallel.

Examples:

∙ I was studying while he was making dinner.

∙ While Ellen was reading, Tim was watching television.

∙ Were you listening while he was talking?

∙ I wasn't paying attention while I was writing the letter, so I made several mistakes. ∙ What were

you doing while you were waiting?

NEGATIVE AND INTERROGATIVE SENTENCES

IN PAST PROGRESSIVE

WE DON’T NEED TO USE ANY AUXILIAR IN THOSE SENTENCES. WE JUST HAVE TO USE THE VERB TO BE IN PAST
(WAS/WERE)
AFFIRMATIVE: - I was doing the homework
- My mother was doing the laundry
- The students were listening a song
NEGATIVE: - I was not doing the homework
- The teacher was not writing the lesson / The teacher wasn’t writing the lesson - We weren´t using the phone now
/ we were not using the phone now INTERROGATIVE: - Were you doing the homework?
l→(yes/no questions) - Was she washing the dishes?
l→(Short answer) - Yes, I as / No, I was not
- Yes, she was / No, she wasn’t

SEMANA # 6 (Del 17 al 21 de mayo)

Now let's work with the four language skills
READING…
A STRANGE EXPERIENCE

Last month I was on holiday in Ireland with my mom and dad. One day, we were driving through a small village. It was
time for lunch, so we stopped at a restaurant.
It was a large, old building. We looked through the window. There were lots of people in the restaurant. They were
eating, drinking and chatting. A musician was playing the violin. But there was something strange about the people.
They weren't wearing normal, modern clothes. They were wearing hats, jackets and dresses from another century. We
couldn't understand it. But we were hungry, so we opened the door.
When we went into the restaurant, everything was different. The people were wearing normal clothes. The musician
wasn't there- the music was on CD. It was a very strange experience!

GERUNDS
El gerundio es una forma verbal definida como una conjugación del verbo que demuestra una acción; pero no está definida ni
por el tiempo, ni el modo, ni el número, ni la persona.
El gerundio se forma de un verbo más la terminación ING y tiene diferentes usos que a veces no llevan una traducción literal en
español como ando, endo, sino más bien como el verbo en infinitivo.

SOME USES OF THE GERUND

El GERUNDIO como sujeto de la oración: para referirnos a los sujetos que realizan una acción determinada a la que se
refiere la oración o a aquellos sustantivos compuestos.
Example:
∙ Hunting tigers are dangerous
∙ Loving students are in front of the class
∙ Reading makes you a critical person
∙ I bought some running shoes
∙ My father will give me some driving lessons
El GERUNDIO después de preposición: Cuando un verbo sigue a una preposición, es necesario emplear el gerundio. Esto
también es cierto para determinadas expresiones que acaban con una preposición, por ejemplo “in spite of” o “there’s no point
in”.
Example:
∙ Can you sneeze without opening your mouth?
∙ She is good at painting
∙ We arrived in Barranquilla after drivinig all night
El GERUNDIO tras determinados verbos y expresiones: Se emeplea de forma habitual tras numerosos verbos y
expresiones. Los mas relevantes se recogen a continuación. Todos ellos pueden ir seguidos de nombres en lugar de verbos.
Recordemos que el gerundio siempre funciona como un sustantivo en la oración.

Examples of some verbs follow by gerunds:

LIKE FORGIVE SAVE DISLIKE ESCAPE
