Top Gun: Maverick

Wow, 2006 feels like a long time ago! I remember being bummed because I had never had the chance to see one at an airshow before they were retired.

Holy crap, he really doesn't age, does he?

Heh, yeah. I was lucky enough to see quite a few air shows in San Diego back in the day, my dad wasn't associated with pilots as such, but one of the mid-level Navy brass. God, the F-14s really were just ****ing magical - always had a thing for the Air Force's F-15s personally as an all-time favorite, but man, the 14's are a ridiculously close second. Can't really beat the swept-wing function, and they stride that incredibly-cool line between big-and-bulky and aerodynamic-sleek like no other:

Nothing of this generation comes close, Navy or Air Force alike. Definition of classic, you think "Navy aviator", you think F-14.

Is Cruise actually going to do some flying in this? and is his own personal P-51 Mustang going to be in the movie?

Wow that's a pretty strong resemblance.

A bit bummed the release has been delayed a year, but good on them for not rushing it and taking extra the time to make a hopefully good follow-up.

Ugh, Teller. Just one of those "most punchable faces imaginable" guys, oozes pure undiluted smug, can't stand the bastard.

And he's actually kinda half-decent as an actor, which makes it weirder. Heh.

Yikes, never understood some of the hate on Miles, he’s just a really talented actor to me. Or maybe I just haven’t read about any of the *****ebag things he’s done lol.

I don't even know anything about him personally, he might be a nice dude. :oldrazz:

I just see his face in a movie, and get angry. It's irrational, totally.

Apparently he is massively *****ey so it's not completely irrational. He did an interview with GQ (I think) and he was unbearable. Even the writer gave up trying to portray him as anything other than the entitled brat that he is.

However... he's not a bad actor.

I agree. Whiplash, War Dogs, Only the Brave... he has some range. He's just a *****e

I have such fears that this might FLOP big time. But then again, NOSTALGIA is mega-popular now.

whose gonna be on the soundtrack? Isn't that what boosted the 1st film?

Why is *****e censored, but only 5/6ths of the word? You would think it would be the whole word since you never spell it without an e. And isn't it just a medical term that people use as a term of abuse? Like calling someone an enema or a colon cleanser?

"Colon cleanser" might be my new favourite insult. 100% testing it out on my housemate later.

How do you figure? Dude's still always treated like some God on the talk show/promo/press junket circuit every time a movie of his comes out, and obviously his work still makes bank.

Plus, you know, this is Top frickin' Gun.

Yeah, Tom Cruise is one of the very few proper superstars (along with Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio) He's one of those people who will always make the press and any movie he releases tends to be a bit of an "event".

There's no doubt Top Gun is his most iconic role so when this comes out, it'll be a big deal and people will see it no matter what the reviews. Hell, I'd book my ticket now if I could.

I'd say his most iconic roles are:

Top Gun, A Few Good Men, Jerry Maguire and Mission Impossible.

Everyone always quotes A Few Good Men with the "I want the truth!", "You can't handle the truth" scene. And with Jerry Maguire, it's "Show me the money!"

Although the actual film, Jerry Maguire has probably slightly faded into obscurity, even though people always quote from that all the time - eg "You had me at hello."

I forget how many good films he's done. A Few Good Men is brilliant.

Both Top Gun and A Few Good Men are the inspiration for the TV series JAG. That used to be one of my favourite shows. I far preferred it to NCIS and all of its spin-offs.

Maybe Top Gun Maverick will spur a JAG revival.

Or maybe we could even get a sequel to A Few Good Men. He can be an older and more experienced lawyer now with a younger JAG partnering him.

Other than the Firm, I don't think he's played another lawyer. And in the Firm, he wasn't really in the courtroom.

Heh, totally forgot NCIS is a JAG spinoff. Wasn't the actor that played Coates on JAG in NCIS too, but as a different character? Kinda funny. Never really watched much of the latter though, seemed to run too far with all that CSI tech-y stuff for me.

But yeah, as for Cruise, most people think "Cruise movie" even now, they think Top Gun. Maybe there are millennials out there that haven't seen the original, but most people have. Odds are this thing's probably gonna be pretty huge, most Bruckheimer movies are. Plus you've got all that heavy Navy co-operation, the movie's probably going to look amazing under Kosinski, and Cruise is more popular/liked now than he was 10 years ago during the maniacally-laughing-with-Oprah-and-ranting-at-depressed-mothers-of-newborns days.

Yes Coates was an Ensign in JAG and then a completely different character in NCIS: New Orleans.

But they did that with a lot of JAG actors reusing them like that. Fortunately they never did that with David James Elliot or Catherine Bell. That would've been ridiculous.

I gave up with NCIS after a while. Never watched the spin-offs. And even in the beginning I never really enjoyed NCIS like JAG. I agree it felt too much like CSI. I would love to get a new JAG series though even with different actors. Or they could get DJE or Catherine Bell back for the odd cameo as high-ranking senior officers now.

I'd say with Cruise, people would think Top Gun, A Few Good Men and Mission Impossible. Then afterwards, maybe the Firm, Jerry Maguire, Rain Man, Interview with the Vampire, possibly Edge of Tomorrow.

.
Zoe McLellan, Petty Officer Coates of JAG became Special Agent Brody on NCIS: New Orleans. Besides Admiral Chegwidden, the second and longest running actual US Navy JAG on the show turning up on NCIS Los Angeles when Miguel Ferrer was on extended leave before his death there have only been a couple of cameos to protect the JAG/NCIS franchise as actors are used more in a Law & Order fashion. Even today with multiple assistant and deputy directors running around the Los Angeles show when the Director of NCIS gets taken Agents Gibbs, being the star, and not one of those other directors is the acting NCIS Director.

Did Chegwidden show up in NCIS?

Anyway, I don't think NCIS really care now to seem all that linked to JAG. They probably figure that people have forgotten about that series now, especially since NCIS has become extremely popular in its own right as a CSI-type show. They've spawned several spin-offs just doing the same old forensics stuff which gets really boring. After 4 CSI shows and 3 NCIS series, you'd think people would be getting bored of this sort of formula.

But nope. It seems people love a good murder mystery. Even though there was some of that on JAG.

JAG was just much more versatile. One week it could be completely in the court room and you'd get A Few Good Men. Another week it would be all action and adventure and dog fights, and you'd get Top Gun. And other weeks they'd be investigating murders. That seems far more interesting to me than NCIS's premise.
