Alfi Rahman, S. I.Kom., M.Si., Ph.D.

Tentang Saya (About Me)

Alfi holds the position of Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIP) at Universitas Syiah Kuala (USK) in Banda Aceh, Indonesia. In addition to his teaching role, Alfi is an active researcher at the Tsunami and Disaster Mitigation Research Center (TDMRC),  https://tdmrc.usk.ac.id/ and serves as the Director of the Research Center for Social and Cultural Studies (PRISB) https://prisb.usk.ac.id/  at USK. Alfi earned his Doctoral degree from Tohoku University, Japan, in 2018. His doctoral specialization was in the Human Security and Society Program at the Graduate School of International Cultural Studies. This program equipped him with a deep understanding of human security's complexities, a crucial element in disaster risk reduction. His educational journey includes a Master's degree in Disaster Science, which he obtained from USK in 2014. His undergraduate studies led to a Bachelor's in Communication. Alfi's academic background positions him to bridge the gaps between disaster management, communication, local practices for disaster risk reduction and human security.

Alfi delves into the social aspects of disaster management. He investigates how communities respond to disasters, how social structures impact vulnerability, and how collective actions can improve disaster resilience. This sociological lens allows him to comprehensively explore the human and community dimensions of DRR. Furthermore, Alfi adopts an anthropological approach in his research, which focuses on understanding the cultural and indigenous knowledge systems that play a vital role in disaster management. This approach is especially relevant where local knowledge and practices inform disaster responses. By examining these indigenous knowledge, he seeks to integrate them into DRR strategies. Alfi's research contributes to a holistic understanding of DRR by combining sociological and anthropological perspectives.  His work has yielded valuable insights and recommendations for addressing the challenges and complexities of disaster. One of Alfi's distinctive strengths is his active involvement in international research collaborations. He has significantly contributed to projects such as The Royal Academy of Engineering (RAENG) champion-UK https://www.digitaldrr.com/home  and The Resilient School Hubs funded by UKRI UK, https://www.ucl.ac.uk/pals/research/clinical-educational-and-health-psychology/research-groups/resilient-school-hubs-0. These collaborations have not only broadened his horizons but have also made substantial contributions to advancing the field of disaster mitigation and humanitarian efforts on a global scale.

Furthermore, Alfi is Editor in Chief for the International Journal of Disaster Management (IJDM). The journal, accessible at http://jurnal.usk.ac.id/IJDM, plays a role in disseminating research and knowledge related to disaster management.
