The major aim of this paper is to analyze the extent to which the lending behavior of 14 investm... more The major aim of this paper is to analyze the extent to which the lending behavior of 14 investment and development banks in Turkey is responsive to different quantiles of selected three core variables (i.e., (i) non-performing loans/total cash loans ratio (%), (ii) net profit/equity ratio (%), and (iii) liabilities/equity ratio (%)) for the period between 2005/January and 2020/December. The estimation of a change in the degree of lending behavior, proxied by total loans/total assets ratio (%), is stimulated through an endogenous model where different quantile regression models are performed to examine the miscellaneous relationship among the selected variables and to correct potential diagnostic problems stemming from the endogeneous regressors in the panel data analysis. The empirical results imply that there aretwo fundamental outputs produced in regression analyses: On the one hand, the lending behavior is affected only by the non-performing loans/total cash loans ratio with a negative coefficient sign and the liabilities/equity ratio with a positive coefficient sign, mostly at the lowest quantiles. On the other hand, the
highest quantiles showed that the coefficients of these variables are insignificant. In addition, the net profit/equity ratio is only significant with a negative coefficient sign in limited quantiles. This means that there is a mild heterogeneity of statistically significant variables across different quantiles where the lowest quartile of lending behavior of investment and development banks is not confronted with the higher level of financial activities.

This paper applies recursive right-tailed unit root tests to detect bubble activity for Turkish L... more This paper applies recursive right-tailed unit root tests to detect bubble activity for Turkish Lira against financially most-traded five currencies (i.e., the US Dollar (USD/TRY), the British pound (GBP/TRY), the Euro (EUR/TRY), the Chinese Yuan (CNY/TRY) and the Russian Ruble (RUB/TRY)) over January 2, 2015 to February 12, 2021. It can be identified from the Supremum Augmented Dickey-Fuller (SADF) and the Generalized Supremum Augmented Dickey-Fuller (GSADF) tests statistics that there is a high degree of evidence of bubble activity which characterizes all five exchange rates both in the full-sample period and in the sub-periods, including the pre-COVID-19 era (January 2, 2015 to November 15, 2019) and the COVID-19 era (November 18, 2019 to February 12, 2021). The empirical results also indicate that positive bubbles are common for each selected exchange rate and the multiple bubbles were intensified during the COVID-19 period, referring that forex markets became relatively more inefficient compared to the pre-COVID-19 period.

This paper investigates the effects of speculative-led attacks on volatility spillover through se... more This paper investigates the effects of speculative-led attacks on volatility spillover through selected 20 stock markets over the period of January 03, 2013 and March 14, 2021, implementing a recently developed wavelet spectrum analysis. To assess the degree of speculation, the time scale of the study is divided into two parts as the pre-COVID-19 era and the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition, the potential effects of speculative-led attacks on stock markets are analyzed both through the income-based and region-based classifications. In that vein, the empirical results are built upon three parts. First, the volatility spillover is more common for the high-income economies than the rest of the other economies and it is much visible at the COVID-19 pandemic. Second, the regional differences of stock markets have also a crucial impact on the behaviors of financial investors in which the speculative-led attacks are intensified in the regions where the financial transactions are relatively much higher. Finally, the core reason behind the increase of speculative attacks in those stock markets is an ongoing stagnation in productive activities during the COVID-19 pandemic.

High-Income Countries and the Feldstein-Horioka Puzzle: Econometric Evidence From Dynamic Common-Correlated Effects Model

This paper reexamines the magnitude of international capital mobility under the Feldstein-Horioka... more This paper reexamines the magnitude of international capital mobility under the Feldstein-Horioka puzzle in the context of 29 high-income countries over the 1980-2019 period. The puzzle is also revisited by employing the Dynamic Common-Correlated Effects method to incorporate the issues of cross-sectional dependence and heterogeneity. Moreover, the study investigates the role of macroeconomic and social factors, such as labor share of income, welfare-relevant technological progress, financial development, government expenditure, and political globalization, to go further beyond the traditional findings in the existing literature. The empirical results are based on three main headings. First, the findings confirm the existence of the Feldstein-Horioka puzzle. In other words, there is a lack of international capital mobility among high-income countries. Second, by using the interaction terms for financial development, government expenditure, and political globalization with the savings ratio, the immobile characteristics of international capital can be reduced by further implications of a higher rate of government expenditure. Finally, the results show that having more unequal distribution of income among capital and labor intensifies the domestic investment-saving nexus for an aggregate economy since the financial assets become more shrinking away from flowing out of the host country.

This study investigates the dynamic mechanism of financial markets on volatility spillovers acros... more This study investigates the dynamic mechanism of financial markets on volatility spillovers across eight major cryptocurrency returns, namely Bitcoin, Ethereum, Stellar, Ripple, Tether, Cardano, Litecoin, and Eos from November 17, 2019, to January 25, 2021. The study captures the financial behavior of investors during the COVID-19 pandemic as a result of national lockdowns and slowdown of production. Three different methods, namely, EGARCH, DCC-GARCH, and wavelet, are used to understand whether cryptocurrency markets have been exposed to extreme volatility. While GARCH family models provide information about asset returns at given time scales, wavelets capture that information across different frequencies without losing inputs from the time horizon. The overall results show that three cryptocurrency markets (i.e., Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Litecoin) are highly volatile and mutually dependent over the sample period. This result means that any kind of shock in one market leads investors to act in the same direction in the other market and thus indirectly causes volatility spillovers in those markets. The results also imply that the volatility spillover across cryptocurrency markets was more influential in the second lockdown that started at the beginning of November 2020. Finally, to calculate the financial risk, two methods—namely, value-at-risk (VaR) and conditional value-at-risk (CVaR)—are used, along with two additional stock indices (the Shanghai Composite Index and S&P 500). Regardless of the confidence level investigated, the selected crypto assets, with the exception of the USDT were found to have substantially greater downside risk than SSE and S&P 500.

Perspectives on degree of economic openness have been discussed by different paradigms resulting ... more Perspectives on degree of economic openness have been discussed by different paradigms resulting in concluding remarks which differ widely from each other. However, the existing literature has passed over the importance of the relationship between economic openness and income distribution in relation to the bargaining framework and thus its effect on social solidarity. In this paper, the rationale is based on the argument that an increase in the degree of economic openness has a significant impact on the distribution of income through the channels of trade and financial account. The empirical results show that a more open economic environment leads to an unequal distribution of income, both reducing labor's share and increasing income inequality, through the collapse of bargaining power of labor in favor of capital across advanced economies over the 1996–2014 period. However, the results also suggest that the trade channel is a more effective influence on income distribution than the finance channel. Additionally, other globalization measures, including economic, social and political factors, also have negative effects on income distribution by way of reducing the bargaining power of labor, which results in the collapse of social solidarity and cohesion over time.

Financialization has been growing importance in macroeconomic perspectives since the finance-domi... more Financialization has been growing importance in macroeconomic perspectives since the finance-dominated capitalist relations have captured many of the specific positions in an aggregate economy. However, the empirical literature has substantially ignored the examination of the link between an increasing scale of financialization and the rising income inequality. In this study, a major hypothesis is based on the fact that the finance-dominated capitalism has a considerable effect on distributional practices through the channels of bargaining power. By applying the Kaleckian approach, the paper investigates the relationship between financialization and the labor share of national income using a panel dataset of 52 countries over the 1992-2012 period. The results suggest that a higher level of stock market development leads to a more unequal distribution of income and, thus, to the decline of wage share in the national income. Other factors such as globalization and technical change can also exacerbate the decline of wages, coupled with a decrease in the bargaining position of labor measured by unemployment rate and labor force participation rate.

This paper investigates the empirical significance of the unemployment problem whether it is stru... more This paper investigates the empirical significance of the unemployment problem whether it is structural or temporary on the basis of region-based, income-based and aggregate classifications of different countries for the yearly data from 1991 to 2018. In the first part of the paper, we examine the stationary position of unemployment series by way of using individual unit-root tests. Since the series are possibly subjected to the structural breaks, we also use additional approaches in which the effects of the break dates are checked in the analysis. Furthermore, we compare the initial findings of univariate unit-root tests along with panel unit-root testing procedures to critically assess the statistical validity of the hysteresis hypothesis in unemployment for given samples. The empirical findings imply that we cannot reject the hysteresis hypothesis for different classifications of the countries against the alternative of a natural rate even in the presence of structural breaks.

However, instead of their negative side-effects on income distribution, most of the current studies have put forward the arguments that each indicator should be spread in the economic relations. Starting from that point of view, this paper investigates the causal relationship from technological progress and economic growth to income distribution (proxied by labor share of income) by implementing the Hatemi-J asymmetric causality test, which divides positive and negative shocks on the benchmark variables, across the G-7 economies over the 1970-2018 period. The empirical findings show that there are large negative effects of technological progress and economic globa which also contradicts with the mainstream wisdom.

The Relevance of Financial Integration Across Europe: A Dynamic Panel Data Approach

This paper aims to examine the degree of financial integration for selected European countries fr... more This paper aims to examine the degree of financial integration for selected European countries from 1980 to 2019 using dynamic panel data approaches, covering the panel unit-root tests, cointegration analysis, panel Granger causality tests, and the DOLS and FMOLS methods. Saving and investment rates are found to be stationary at order of integration one, i.e., I (1). It is also found to be that the series are cointegrated along with different methods. Similar to that of cointegration analysis, it is observed that the causality between the variables is statistically significant and bidirectional. Finally, the current study proceeds to test the direction of coefficients for the estimation of the long-run relationship among the series by way of using panel DOLS and FMOLS methods. The values of coefficients show that the effects of each variable on another are both positive and statistically significant at the 1% level. Therefore, the empirical findings point out that strong financial integration is relevant to those European countries.

This paper utilizes the degree of permanent effects in unemployment rates using a wide array of u... more This paper utilizes the degree of permanent effects in unemployment rates using a wide array of unit-root testing methods for 19 Euro Area countries over the 1983M1-2019M7 period. First and foremost, we examine the theoretical context of linear hysteresis through the implementation of univariate unit-root tests. Since this may contain some potential issues, we also take into account the presence of structural breaks in unemployment. Moreover, we quantify the initial results within the context of panel unit-root tests whether the hysteresis effects in unemployment are still prevailing for the sample. Our findings show that, in general, we cannot reject the hysteresis hypothesis for the 19 Euro Area countries against the alternative of a natural rate even after controlling for structural breaks. The results are thus compatible with the views on the existence of path-dependence of steady-state equilibrium unemployment.

The testing procedure of the bubble behavior in selected cryptocurrency prices is investigated by two methodologies, which are rarely applied in the relevant literature. Those covers the test statistics originated by the Supremum Augmented Dickey-Fuller (SADF) (Phillips et al., 2011) and Generalized Supremum Augmented Dickey-Fuller (GSADF) (Phillips et al., 2015) to define several bubble periods. The empirical results emphasize that bubble behavior is not a diverse and stable feature of Bitcoin, Ethereum, Ripple, and Stellar prices, except the Tether prices, which point out the emergence of a potential crisis in the digital assets market through an increasing degree of financial instability.

The econometric analysis is based on the Bayer-Hanck combined cointegration test to examine whether the cointegration exists or not between the related variables. The results of the Bayer-Hanck combined cointegration test show that there is no cointegration between financial development and economic growth even in the control of other variables such as economic globalization and technological progress. The estimation results also reveal that the long-run linkage is not prevailing between the variables. In other words, it can be argued that financial development does not contribute to the economic growth process by way of higher levels of economic globalization and technological progress in the long-run.

Contrary to the empirical findings that there is a negative link between financial sector develop... more Contrary to the empirical findings that there is a negative link between financial sector development and income inequality, we introduce a different result: in the earlier stages of the financial and economic development, the level of income inequality decreases, but with an ongoing developmental process, the later stages show that the above-mentioned link between finance and inequality turns into positive within the framework of financial Kuznets curve. In terms of finance-inequality nexus, we find that neither markets nor institutions play a significant role for the decrease in income inequality. When the results are measured within this context, the study concludes that the U-shaped financial Kuznets curve hypothesis is valid in the sample countries.

The Multidimensional Effects of Financialization on the Growth of Income Inequality: New Empirical Evidence for 97 Countries

Increasing financial relations and transactions, which constitute one of the important components... more Increasing financial relations and transactions, which constitute one of the important components of income inequality, is the leading factor that should be considered in analyzing the transformations of internal dynamics of current economies. In this sense, the linkage of the changes in financial sector, which is examined under the concept of financialization, with income inequality is the basis of this study. The financialization-income inequality nexus deals with the period of 1991-2014 for 97 countries by way of analyzing with the fixed effects method. According to the empirical results, which include labor market variables as well as economic variables, there is a positive correlation between financialization and income inequality. In other words, increasing the scale of financial relations and transactions has a positive effect on income inequality. The empirical outputs point out that this fact mainly depends on the current transformation in the labor markets. The reduction in the bargaining power of labor is assumed to have an increasing effect on the level of income inequality within the framework of financialization.

Autoregressive Distributed Lag Approach to the Income Inequality and Financial Liberalization Nexus: Empirical Evidence from Turkey

This paper critically examines the validity of orthodox assumptions about the positive effects of... more This paper critically examines the validity of orthodox assumptions about the positive effects of financial liberalization on income inequality by employing the autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) Bound test by Pesaran et al. (2001) for the yearly data of Turkey over the 1987-2016 period. The benchmark results suggest that the income distribution worsens by the implementation of more liberalization in the financial sector for a long-run equilibrium relationship. Further, the study attempts to investigate an inverted U-shaped hypothesis of financial development. The findings indicate that income inequality improves at the initial stages of financial development but worsens over time. Therefore, it rejects the income-narrowing hypothesis for the latter stages of financial development. With the advantage that ARDL approach incorporates both I(0) and I(1) series, the study concludes that the positive relationship between financial liberalization and income inequality is prevalent both in the short-and the long-run in control of other variables.

Testing Explosive Bubble for Eurozone Exchange Rate in the COVID-19 Outbreak: Evidence from Recursive Right-Tailed Tests

This paper investigates the presence of explosive bubbles in financial markets using daily data (... more This paper investigates the presence of explosive bubbles in financial markets using daily data (5-day weeks) of the closing rate of EUR/USD exchange in the COVID-19 outbreak, covering the period from December 2, 2019 to December 4, 2020. The bubble behavior in the closing rate of EUR/USD exchange is measured by two distinct right-tailed testing procedures. In this vein, the Supremum Augmented Dickey-Fuller (SADF) test developed by Phillips et al. (2011) and the Generalized Supremum Augmented Dickey-Fuller (GSADF) test developed by Phillips et al. (2015) are used to identify multiple bubble periods. The empirical findings imply that positive bubbles are a common feature of the closing rate of EUR/USD exchange in the COVID-19 outbreak. As a critical year, 2020 is identified to point out the importance of explosive bubble behavior, after which estimated statistics by two types of unit-root test procedures provide evidence of ongoing financial instability.

This study investigates the tripartite relationship between ecological footprint, economic growth... more This study investigates the tripartite relationship between ecological footprint, economic growth, and technological change in Turkey over the 1961-2017 period. The sample is divided into three periods as 1961-1989 (i.e., pre-liberalisation era), 1990-2017 (i.e., post-liberalisation era), and 1961-2017 (i.e., full-sample era) to grasp the structural transformation of socio-economic framework in Turkey. The econometric analysis is based on the combined co-integration test developed by Bayer and Hanck in 2013 to detect whether the series are co-integrated or not. The empirical findings show that the series are highly co-integrated in terms of different estimated models and each selected period. The estimation results also indicate that there is a long-run linkage among the series. In other words, each indicator has an economic meaning to contribute to their changes over the long-run period.

Bu çalışmada, toplam faktör verimliliği, ekonomik büyüme ve ihracat arasındaki ilişki Türkiye eko... more Bu çalışmada, toplam faktör verimliliği, ekonomik büyüme ve ihracat arasındaki ilişki Türkiye ekonomisi için 1960-2014 döneminde Engle-Granger nedensellik analizi, Johansen eşbütünleme testi ve hata düzeltme modeli aracılığıyla incelenmiştir. Nedensellik analizi çerçevesinde, mevcut serilerin uzun ve kısa dönem ilişkileri açısından, uzun dönemde toplam faktör verimliliği ekonomik büyüme üzerinde negatif etkide bulunurken ihracatı pozitif yönde etkilediği görülmektedir. Bu bağlamda, Türkiye ekonomisinin inovasyonu teşvik eden bir büyüme modeline sahip olmadığı belirlenmitir. Arkasındaki olası nedenler kısaca şu şekilde belirtilebilir: (i) finans odaklı yatırım stratejileri, (ii) spekülatif güdülerin artışı, (iii) finansallaşma ve (iv) borçlanma artışı. Çalışmada elde edilen bir diğer önemli bulgu, ihracat odaklı üretimde kullanılan ara malların yüksek oranda ithal kökenli olmasına karşın, ekonomik büyüme üzerinde ihracatın negatif etkisi görülürken toplam faktör verimliliğini pozitif yönde etkilemesidir. Son olarak, Türkiye'de ihracat ile ekonomik büyüme ve toplam faktör verimliliği arasında tek yönlü nedensellik ilişkisi bulunmaktadır.

Bu doğrultuda ilgili çalışmada, Türkiye ekonomisinde mevcut değişkenlerin sürdürülebilirliği doğrusal-ADF ve KPSS-ve doğrusal olmayan-Fourier ADF, Fourier KPSS ve Fourier GLS-birim kök testleri aracılığıyla 1987-2007 (küresel kriz öncesi), 2008-2017 (küresel kriz süreci) ve 1987-2017 (tüm örneklem) dönemleri için üç farklı süreçte analiz edilmektedir. Elde edilen ampirik bulgular geleneksel/doğrusal birim kök testleri çerçevesinde ekolojik açıklık ve ekonomik büyüme serilerinin düzeyde, özel sektör kredisine ait serinin ise ilk farkında durağanlığını göstermektedir. Buna ek olarak, yapısal kırılmaları göz önünde tutarak uygulanan Fourier tipi doğrusal olmayan birim kök testleri için alt dönemlerde büyük oranda tüm serilerde düzeyde durağanlık elde edilirken tüm dönem test istatistikleri için ise ekolojik açıklığın aksine ekonomik büyüme ve özel sektör kredilerinin ilk farklarında ortalamaya dönme eğilimine sahip olduğu vurgulanmaktadır.

This paper applies recursive right-tailed unit root tests to detect bubble activity for Turkish L... more This paper applies recursive right-tailed unit root tests to detect bubble activity for Turkish Lira against financially most-traded five currencies (i.e., the US Dollar (USD/TRY), the British pound (GBP/TRY), the Euro (EUR/TRY), the Chinese Yuan (CNY/TRY) and the Russian Ruble (RUB/TRY)) over January 2, 2015 to February 12, 2021. It can be identified from the Supremum Augmented Dickey-Fuller (SADF) and the Generalized Supremum Augmented Dickey-Fuller (GSADF) tests statistics that there is a high degree of evidence of bubble activity which characterizes all five exchange rates both in the full-sample period and in the sub-periods, including the pre-COVID-19 era (January 2, 2015 to November 15, 2019) and the COVID-19 era (November 18, 2019 to February 12, 2021). The empirical results also indicate that positive bubbles are common for each selected exchange rate and the multiple bubbles were intensified during the COVID-19 period, referring that forex markets became relatively more inefficient compared to the pre-COVID-19 period.

This paper investigates the effects of speculative-led attacks on volatility spillover through se... more This paper investigates the effects of speculative-led attacks on volatility spillover through selected 20 stock markets over the period of January 03, 2013 and March 14, 2021, implementing a recently developed wavelet spectrum analysis. To assess the degree of speculation, the time scale of the study is divided into two parts as the pre-COVID-19 era and the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition, the potential effects of speculative-led attacks on stock markets are analyzed both through the income-based and region-based classifications. In that vein, the empirical results are built upon three parts. First, the volatility spillover is more common for the high-income economies than the rest of the other economies and it is much visible at the COVID-19 pandemic. Second, the regional differences of stock markets have also a crucial impact on the behaviors of financial investors in which the speculative-led attacks are intensified in the regions where the financial transactions are relatively much higher. Finally, the core reason behind the increase of speculative attacks in those stock markets is an ongoing stagnation in productive activities during the COVID-19 pandemic.

High-Income Countries and the Feldstein-Horioka Puzzle: Econometric Evidence From Dynamic Common-Correlated Effects Model

This paper reexamines the magnitude of international capital mobility under the Feldstein-Horioka... more This paper reexamines the magnitude of international capital mobility under the Feldstein-Horioka puzzle in the context of 29 high-income countries over the 1980-2019 period. The puzzle is also revisited by employing the Dynamic Common-Correlated Effects method to incorporate the issues of cross-sectional dependence and heterogeneity. Moreover, the study investigates the role of macroeconomic and social factors, such as labor share of income, welfare-relevant technological progress, financial development, government expenditure, and political globalization, to go further beyond the traditional findings in the existing literature. The empirical results are based on three main headings. First, the findings confirm the existence of the Feldstein-Horioka puzzle. In other words, there is a lack of international capital mobility among high-income countries. Second, by using the interaction terms for financial development, government expenditure, and political globalization with the savings ratio, the immobile characteristics of international capital can be reduced by further implications of a higher rate of government expenditure. Finally, the results show that having more unequal distribution of income among capital and labor intensifies the domestic investment-saving nexus for an aggregate economy since the financial assets become more shrinking away from flowing out of the host country.

This study investigates the dynamic mechanism of financial markets on volatility spillovers acros... more This study investigates the dynamic mechanism of financial markets on volatility spillovers across eight major cryptocurrency returns, namely Bitcoin, Ethereum, Stellar, Ripple, Tether, Cardano, Litecoin, and Eos from November 17, 2019, to January 25, 2021. The study captures the financial behavior of investors during the COVID-19 pandemic as a result of national lockdowns and slowdown of production. Three different methods, namely, EGARCH, DCC-GARCH, and wavelet, are used to understand whether cryptocurrency markets have been exposed to extreme volatility. While GARCH family models provide information about asset returns at given time scales, wavelets capture that information across different frequencies without losing inputs from the time horizon. The overall results show that three cryptocurrency markets (i.e., Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Litecoin) are highly volatile and mutually dependent over the sample period. This result means that any kind of shock in one market leads investors to act in the same direction in the other market and thus indirectly causes volatility spillovers in those markets. The results also imply that the volatility spillover across cryptocurrency markets was more influential in the second lockdown that started at the beginning of November 2020. Finally, to calculate the financial risk, two methods—namely, value-at-risk (VaR) and conditional value-at-risk (CVaR)—are used, along with two additional stock indices (the Shanghai Composite Index and S&P 500). Regardless of the confidence level investigated, the selected crypto assets, with the exception of the USDT were found to have substantially greater downside risk than SSE and S&P 500.

Perspectives on degree of economic openness have been discussed by different paradigms resulting ... more Perspectives on degree of economic openness have been discussed by different paradigms resulting in concluding remarks which differ widely from each other. However, the existing literature has passed over the importance of the relationship between economic openness and income distribution in relation to the bargaining framework and thus its effect on social solidarity. In this paper, the rationale is based on the argument that an increase in the degree of economic openness has a significant impact on the distribution of income through the channels of trade and financial account. The empirical results show that a more open economic environment leads to an unequal distribution of income, both reducing labor's share and increasing income inequality, through the collapse of bargaining power of labor in favor of capital across advanced economies over the 1996–2014 period. However, the results also suggest that the trade channel is a more effective influence on income distribution than the finance channel. Additionally, other globalization measures, including economic, social and political factors, also have negative effects on income distribution by way of reducing the bargaining power of labor, which results in the collapse of social solidarity and cohesion over time.

Financialization has been growing importance in macroeconomic perspectives since the finance-domi... more Financialization has been growing importance in macroeconomic perspectives since the finance-dominated capitalist relations have captured many of the specific positions in an aggregate economy. However, the empirical literature has substantially ignored the examination of the link between an increasing scale of financialization and the rising income inequality. In this study, a major hypothesis is based on the fact that the finance-dominated capitalism has a considerable effect on distributional practices through the channels of bargaining power. By applying the Kaleckian approach, the paper investigates the relationship between financialization and the labor share of national income using a panel dataset of 52 countries over the 1992-2012 period. The results suggest that a higher level of stock market development leads to a more unequal distribution of income and, thus, to the decline of wage share in the national income. Other factors such as globalization and technical change can also exacerbate the decline of wages, coupled with a decrease in the bargaining position of labor measured by unemployment rate and labor force participation rate.

This paper investigates the empirical significance of the unemployment problem whether it is stru... more This paper investigates the empirical significance of the unemployment problem whether it is structural or temporary on the basis of region-based, income-based and aggregate classifications of different countries for the yearly data from 1991 to 2018. In the first part of the paper, we examine the stationary position of unemployment series by way of using individual unit-root tests. Since the series are possibly subjected to the structural breaks, we also use additional approaches in which the effects of the break dates are checked in the analysis. Furthermore, we compare the initial findings of univariate unit-root tests along with panel unit-root testing procedures to critically assess the statistical validity of the hysteresis hypothesis in unemployment for given samples. The empirical findings imply that we cannot reject the hysteresis hypothesis for different classifications of the countries against the alternative of a natural rate even in the presence of structural breaks.

However, instead of their negative side-effects on income distribution, most of the current studies have put forward the arguments that each indicator should be spread in the economic relations. Starting from that point of view, this paper investigates the causal relationship from technological progress and economic growth to income distribution (proxied by labor share of income) by implementing the Hatemi-J asymmetric causality test, which divides positive and negative shocks on the benchmark variables, across the G-7 economies over the 1970-2018 period. The empirical findings show that there are large negative effects of technological progress and economic globa which also contradicts with the mainstream wisdom.

This paper aims to examine the degree of financial integration for selected European countries fr... more This paper aims to examine the degree of financial integration for selected European countries from 1980 to 2019 using dynamic panel data approaches, covering the panel unit-root tests, cointegration analysis, panel Granger causality tests, and the DOLS and FMOLS methods. Saving and investment rates are found to be stationary at order of integration one, i.e., I (1). It is also found to be that the series are cointegrated along with different methods. Similar to that of cointegration analysis, it is observed that the causality between the variables is statistically significant and bidirectional. Finally, the current study proceeds to test the direction of coefficients for the estimation of the long-run relationship among the series by way of using panel DOLS and FMOLS methods. The values of coefficients show that the effects of each variable on another are both positive and statistically significant at the 1% level. Therefore, the empirical findings point out that strong financial integration is relevant to those European countries.

First and foremost, we examine the theoretical context of linear hysteresis through the implementation of univariate unit-root tests. Since this may contain some potential issues, we also take into account the presence of structural breaks in unemployment. Moreover, we quantify the initial results within the context of panel unit-root tests whether the hysteresis effects in unemployment are still prevailing for the sample. Our findings show that, in general, we cannot reject the hysteresis hypothesis for the 19 Euro Area countries against the alternative of a natural rate even after controlling for structural breaks. The results are thus compatible with the views on the existence of path-dependence of steady-state equilibrium unemployment.

The testing procedure of the bubble behavior in selected cryptocurrency prices is investigated by two methodologies, which are rarely applied in the relevant literature. Those covers the test statistics originated by the Supremum Augmented Dickey-Fuller (SADF) (Phillips et al., 2011) and Generalized Supremum Augmented Dickey-Fuller (GSADF) (Phillips et al., 2015) to define several bubble periods. The empirical results emphasize that bubble behavior is not a diverse and stable feature of Bitcoin, Ethereum, Ripple, and Stellar prices, except the Tether prices, which point out the emergence of a potential crisis in the digital assets market through an increasing degree of financial instability.

The econometric analysis is based on the Bayer-Hanck combined cointegration test to examine whether the cointegration exists or not between the related variables. The results of the Bayer-Hanck combined cointegration test show that there is no cointegration between financial development and economic growth even in the control of other variables such as economic globalization and technological progress. The estimation results also reveal that the long-run linkage is not prevailing between the variables. In other words, it can be argued that financial development does not contribute to the economic growth process by way of higher levels of economic globalization and technological progress in the long-run.

Contrary to the empirical findings that there is a negative link between financial sector develop... more Contrary to the empirical findings that there is a negative link between financial sector development and income inequality, we introduce a different result: in the earlier stages of the financial and economic development, the level of income inequality decreases, but with an ongoing developmental process, the later stages show that the above-mentioned link between finance and inequality turns into positive within the framework of financial Kuznets curve. In terms of finance-inequality nexus, we find that neither markets nor institutions play a significant role for the decrease in income inequality. When the results are measured within this context, the study concludes that the U-shaped financial Kuznets curve hypothesis is valid in the sample countries.

The Multidimensional Effects of Financialization on the Growth of Income Inequality: New Empirical Evidence for 97 Countries

Increasing financial relations and transactions, which constitute one of the important components... more Increasing financial relations and transactions, which constitute one of the important components of income inequality, is the leading factor that should be considered in analyzing the transformations of internal dynamics of current economies. In this sense, the linkage of the changes in financial sector, which is examined under the concept of financialization, with income inequality is the basis of this study. The financialization-income inequality nexus deals with the period of 1991-2014 for 97 countries by way of analyzing with the fixed effects method. According to the empirical results, which include labor market variables as well as economic variables, there is a positive correlation between financialization and income inequality. In other words, increasing the scale of financial relations and transactions has a positive effect on income inequality. The empirical outputs point out that this fact mainly depends on the current transformation in the labor markets. The reduction in the bargaining power of labor is assumed to have an increasing effect on the level of income inequality within the framework of financialization.

This paper critically examines the validity of orthodox assumptions about the positive effects of... more This paper critically examines the validity of orthodox assumptions about the positive effects of financial liberalization on income inequality by employing the autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) Bound test by Pesaran et al. (2001) for the yearly data of Turkey over the 1987-2016 period. The benchmark results suggest that the income distribution worsens by the implementation of more liberalization in the financial sector for a long-run equilibrium relationship. Further, the study attempts to investigate an inverted U-shaped hypothesis of financial development. The findings indicate that income inequality improves at the initial stages of financial development but worsens over time. Therefore, it rejects the income-narrowing hypothesis for the latter stages of financial development. With the advantage that ARDL approach incorporates both I(0) and I(1) series, the study concludes that the positive relationship between financial liberalization and income inequality is prevalent both in the short-and the long-run in control of other variables.

The bubble behavior in the closing rate of EUR/USD exchange is measured by two distinct right-tailed testing procedures. In this vein, the Supremum Augmented Dickey-Fuller (SADF) test developed by Phillips et al. (2011) and the Generalized Supremum Augmented Dickey-Fuller (GSADF) test developed by Phillips et al. (2015) are used to identify multiple bubble periods. The empirical findings imply that positive bubbles are a common feature of the closing rate of EUR/USD exchange in the COVID-19 outbreak. As a critical year, 2020 is identified to point out the importance of explosive bubble behavior, after which estimated statistics by two types of unit-root test procedures provide evidence of ongoing financial instability.

This study investigates the tripartite relationship between ecological footprint, economic growth... more This study investigates the tripartite relationship between ecological footprint, economic growth, and technological change in Turkey over the 1961-2017 period. The sample is divided into three periods as 1961-1989 (i.e., pre-liberalisation era), 1990-2017 (i.e., post-liberalisation era), and 1961-2017 (i.e., full-sample era) to grasp the structural transformation of socio-economic framework in Turkey. The econometric analysis is based on the combined co-integration test developed by Bayer and Hanck in 2013 to detect whether the series are co-integrated or not. The empirical findings show that the series are highly co-integrated in terms of different estimated models and each selected period. The estimation results also indicate that there is a long-run linkage among the series. In other words, each indicator has an economic meaning to contribute to their changes over the long-run period.

Bu çalışmada, toplam faktör verimliliği, ekonomik büyüme ve ihracat arasındaki ilişki Türkiye eko... more Bu çalışmada, toplam faktör verimliliği, ekonomik büyüme ve ihracat arasındaki ilişki Türkiye ekonomisi için 1960-2014 döneminde Engle-Granger nedensellik analizi, Johansen eşbütünleme testi ve hata düzeltme modeli aracılığıyla incelenmiştir. Nedensellik analizi çerçevesinde, mevcut serilerin uzun ve kısa dönem ilişkileri açısından, uzun dönemde toplam faktör verimliliği ekonomik büyüme üzerinde negatif etkide bulunurken ihracatı pozitif yönde etkilediği görülmektedir. Bu bağlamda, Türkiye ekonomisinin inovasyonu teşvik eden bir büyüme modeline sahip olmadığı belirlenmitir. Arkasındaki olası nedenler kısaca şu şekilde belirtilebilir: (i) finans odaklı yatırım stratejileri, (ii) spekülatif güdülerin artışı, (iii) finansallaşma ve (iv) borçlanma artışı. Çalışmada elde edilen bir diğer önemli bulgu, ihracat odaklı üretimde kullanılan ara malların yüksek oranda ithal kökenli olmasına karşın, ekonomik büyüme üzerinde ihracatın negatif etkisi görülürken toplam faktör verimliliğini pozitif yönde etkilemesidir. Son olarak, Türkiye'de ihracat ile ekonomik büyüme ve toplam faktör verimliliği arasında tek yönlü nedensellik ilişkisi bulunmaktadır.

Bu doğrultuda ilgili çalışmada, Türkiye ekonomisinde mevcut değişkenlerin sürdürülebilirliği doğrusal-ADF ve KPSS-ve doğrusal olmayan-Fourier ADF, Fourier KPSS ve Fourier GLS-birim kök testleri aracılığıyla 1987-2007 (küresel kriz öncesi), 2008-2017 (küresel kriz süreci) ve 1987-2017 (tüm örneklem) dönemleri için üç farklı süreçte analiz edilmektedir. Elde edilen ampirik bulgular geleneksel/doğrusal birim kök testleri çerçevesinde ekolojik açıklık ve ekonomik büyüme serilerinin düzeyde, özel sektör kredisine ait serinin ise ilk farkında durağanlığını göstermektedir. Buna ek olarak, yapısal kırılmaları göz önünde tutarak uygulanan Fourier tipi doğrusal olmayan birim kök testleri için alt dönemlerde büyük oranda tüm serilerde düzeyde durağanlık elde edilirken tüm dönem test istatistikleri için ise ekolojik açıklığın aksine ekonomik büyüme ve özel sektör kredilerinin ilk farklarında ortalamaya dönme eğilimine sahip olduğu vurgulanmaktadır.

Özellikle iktisadi yapıda ortaya çıkan kırılmalar tüketici ve üretici birimlerin davranışlarını farklılaştırarak yeni yönelimlerin ortaya çıkmasını beraberinde getirmektedir. Ülkelerin salgına bağlı yaşadığı iktisadi kapanmalar ise yatırımcıların üretimdeki düşüşe bağlı kazanç kayıplarını dengelemek için finansal alana daha fazla yönelmelerine yol açmaktadır. Bu bağlamda, finansal varlıklarda spekülatif alım-satımlar dolayısıyla fiyatlarda aşırı dalgalanmaların ve şişkinliklerin ortaya çıktığı görülebilmektedir. Finans alanında yaşanan mevcut sorunlar nedeniyle uluslararası döviz piyasalarındaki değişimlerin hem dolaylı hem de dolaysız yönden etkileri temelinde balonlaşma eğiliminin varlığını analiz ve tespit etmek büyük önem arz etmektedir. Mevcut çalışma 11/03/2020-25/02/2021 arası dönem için COVID-19 salgınında USD/TRY, EUR/TRY, GBP/TRY, CNY/TRY, RUB/TRY, JPY/TRY, CHF/TRY ve CAD/TRY döviz kuru verileri çerçevesinde Türkiye döviz piyasalarındaki balonun varlığını araştırmaktadır. Döviz piyasasında ortaya çıkabilecek mevcut balonlaşma eğiliminin istatistiki tespiti ise sırasıyla tek balon ve çoklu balon oluşumlarını araştıran Eküs ADF (SADF) ve Genelleştirilmiş SADF (GSADF) yöntemleri ile test edilmektedir. İlgili ampirik sonuçlar, belirtilen döviz kurları için tek balon oluşumunun yaygın olmadığını, ancak tam tersine çoklu balon oluşumunun istatistiki olarak yüksek bir önem seviyesine sahip olduğunu göstermektedir.

Yatırımlardaki dönüşüm ve gelir eşitsizliğinin, ilgili dönemdeki eğilimi göz önünde bulundurularak, bölüşüm üzerindeki yayılım etkilerini tahmin etmek için içsel model geliştirilmektedir. Bu bağlamda, ilgili bağıntıyı analiz etmek ve panel verilerdeki içsel değişkenlerden kaynaklanan olası tanısal sorunları düzeltmek için farklı kantil regresyon modelleri uygulanmaktadır. Elde edilen ampirik bulgular yatırımların gelir eşitsizliği artışı üzerinde pozitif ve istatistiksel olarak anlamlı bir yayılım etkisi olduğunu göstermektedir. Ayrıca sonuçlar farklı düzeylerde yatırımların yayılımlarında önemli bir heterojenlik olduğunu ortaya koymakta ve bu durumunda gelir eşitsizliği üzerindeki yayılımın ilk düzeylerde daha yüksek bir değere sahip olduğunu ve yoğunlaştığını göstermektedir.

Bu çalışma sendikalaşma ve emek payı arasındaki ilişkiyi emek kesiminin sermaye karşısındaki paza... more Bu çalışma sendikalaşma ve emek payı arasındaki ilişkiyi emek kesiminin sermaye karşısındaki pazarlık gücü göstergelerindeki değişimlere bağlı olarak 1960-2017 dönemi kapsamında Amerika Birleşik Devletleri (ABD) için analiz etmektedir. Verili bağıntı temel olarak gecikmesi dağıtılmış otoregresif model (Autoregressive Distributed Lag-ARDL) ile test edilmektedir. Elde edilen istatistiki bulgular, ana akım görüşlerin aksine sendikalaşma ile emek payı arasında pozitif bir ilişkinin mevcut olduğunu göstermektedir. Diğer bir ifadeyle, sendikalaşma oranındaki artış emek kesiminin sermaye karşısında ulusal gelirden aldığı payı artırıcı bir etkiye sahip bulunmaktadır. Bu ilişkinin ardında yatan temel neden ise emek kesiminin pazarlık gücündeki değişimlere bağlı bulunmaktadır. Beşeri sermaye düzeyi, işsizlik oranı ve işgücüne katılım oranı çerçevesinde ölçülen pazarlık gücü göstergesi emek kesiminin her bir değişkene duyarlılığının hem kısa hem de uzun dönemde geçerli olduğunu belirtmektedir. Artan okullaşma seviyesi ve eğitim düzeyine bağlı olarak beşeri sermaye endeksindeki artış emek payını olumlu yönde etkilerken, işsizlik oranındaki artış emek kesiminin ulusal gelirden aldığı payı azaltma eğilimini artırmaktadır. Ayrıca, istihdam edilme düzeyindeki değişimlere bağlı olarak işgücüne katılım oranındaki artış uzun dönemde emek payını artırmaktadır.

Orta Gelir Tuzağı ve Yakınsama: Alt Orta ve Üst Orta Gelirli Ülkeler Üzerine Ampirik Bir İnceleme

Bu çalışma seçili alt orta ve üst orta gelirli ülke gruplarının 1960-2020 arası dönemde orta geli... more Bu çalışma seçili alt orta ve üst orta gelirli ülke gruplarının 1960-2020 arası dönemde orta gelir tuzağına yakalanıp yakalanmadığını araştırmaktadır. Özellikle orta gelir tuzağında bulunan ülkelerin orta ve uzun dönemde mikro ve makro ölçekli değişimler temelinde toplam gelirin bölüşümünde yaşayabilecekleri potansiyel sorunlar nedeniyle ilgili konu literatürde farklı boyutlarda öneme sahip bulunmaktadır. Dünya Bankası gelir sınıflandırması takip edilerek seçilen ülkelerden toplam örneklemin 31’ini alt orta gelirli ülkeler, 22’sini ise üst gelirli ülkeler oluşturmaktadır. Robertson ve Ye (2013) tarafından geliştirilen yakınsama yaklaşımına bağlı olarak ülkelerin orta gelir tuzağına yakalanma durumları zaman serisi ve panel veri birim kök testleri ile incelenmektedir. Zaman serisine ait birim kök analizleri doğrusal (ADF ve KPSS), yapısal kırılmalı (Perron ve Zivot-Andrews) ve doğrusal olmayan Fourier tipi üç farklı test yöntemi (Fourier ADF, Fourier KPSS ve Fourier GLS) ile yapılmaktadır. Panel veri birim kök testleri ise yatay kesit bağımlılığı ve yapısal kırılmaları dikkate alan birim kök testlerinden oluşmaktadır. Elde edilen zaman serisi temelindeki birim kök testleri sonuçları 31 alt orta gelirli ülkeden 18’inin, 22 alt gelirli ülkeden ise 16’sının orta gelir tuzağına yakalandığını göstermektedir. Panel veri birim kök testleri ise zaman serisinde elde edilen bu sonuçları destekler nitelikte olup hem alt hem de üst gelir grubunun birimler ortalaması temelinde orta gelir tuzağında bulunduğunu belirtmektedir.

Dijitalleşen Ekonomi ve Gelir Dağılımı Sorunsalı: Gelişmiş Ülkeler Özelinde Bir İnceleme

Bu çalışma gelir dağılımı ve dijitalleşme arasındaki ilişkiyi panel veri analizi çerçevesinde gel... more Bu çalışma gelir dağılımı ve dijitalleşme arasındaki ilişkiyi panel veri analizi çerçevesinde gelişmiş ülkeler açısından 1995-2017 arası dönem için araştırmaktadır. Mevcut literatürden farklılaştığı nokta iki ana başlık altında belirtilebilir. İlk olarak, dijitalleşme değişkeni olarak toplam faktör verimliliği endeksi ile yatırım payı (% GSYH) çerçevesinde elde edilen etkileşim terimi kullanılmaktadır. İkinci olarak, gelir dağılımı-dijitalleşme bağıntısı literatürde “Teknolojik Kuznets Eğrisi” olarak adlandırılan teorik çerçeve açısından incelenmektedir. Belirtilen tüm bu faktörler dört farklı yöntem altında istatistiksel olarak test edilmektedir. Bunlar sırasıyla şu şekilde belirtilebilir: Temel analiz çerçevesinde öncelikle sabit etkili panel veri analizi ile dijitalleşmenin gelir dağılımı üzerindeki etkisi araştırılmaktadır. Gelir dağılımı değişkeni olarak kullanılan emek payı değişkeninin uzun dönemli etkisi nedeniyle ikinci aşamada aynı yöntem gecikmeli değerlerin ele alındığı dinamik analiz ile incelenmektedir. Üçüncü aşamada içsellik sorunu ele alınarak ilgili bağıntı iki aşamalı sistem-GMM analizi ile test edilmektedir. Son aşamada ise farklı kontrol değişkenlerinin temel analize dahil edildiği modeller çerçevesinde belirli sonuçlara ulaşılmaya çalışılmaktadır. İstatistiki olarak tüm analiz yöntemlerinde gelir dağılımı ile dijitalleşme arasında ilk dönemler için pozitif bir ilişki mevcutken ileri dönemlerde bu ilişki negatife dönmektedir. Diğer bir deyişle, dijitalleşmenin ilk dönemleri emek payını artırırken teknolojinin yayılmaya başlaması ile emek payı bu durumdan olumsuz etkilenmektedir. Bu açıdan, U-ilişki bir “Teknolojik Kuznets Eğrisi”nin istatistiksel olarak anlamlı olduğu görülmektedir.

Bu açıdan öncelikli olarak, COVID-19 sürecinde toplam gelirin bölüşümünü negatif yönde etkileyecek olası faktörler dolaylı - enflasyonist baskı, döviz kuru dalgalanmaları, ekonominin finansallaşması ve sanayi üretim hızının yavaşlaması - ve dolaysız - işsizlik oranındaki artış, çalışan kesimin saatlik kazançlarında oluşan negatif yönlü baskı ve teknoloji bazlı birim emek maliyetindeki azalma - olmak üzere iki sınıflandırma altında incelenmektedir. Mevcut etkiler çerçevesinde ikinci olarak 1980 yılından günümüze temel stilize gerçekler başlığı altında Avrupa Birliği ülkelerinin ve Türkiye’nin karşı karşıya kaldığı iktisadi dönüşümler araştırılmaktadır. Bu çerçevede ilgili değişkenlerin dâhil edilebileceği iktisadi kategoriler dört ana başlık altında sınıflandırılmaktadır: (i) makro ölçekli değişkenlerin etkisi, (ii) finansal değişkenlerin etkisi, (iii) emek kesimine yönelik etkiler ve (iv) bölüşüme ait etkiler. Ele alınan değişkenlerin ortaya çıkardığı temel sonuç, COVID-19 salgını sürecindeki etkinin ülkelerin karşı karşıya kaldığı yerel ve/veya küresel ölçekli iktisadi krizlerin etkilerinden çok daha yoğun olduğudur.

Bu çalışmada farklı gelir kategorilerinde yer alan 88 ülkenin, 1995-2017 yılları arasındaki ekono... more Bu çalışmada farklı gelir kategorilerinde yer alan 88 ülkenin, 1995-2017 yılları arasındaki ekonomik entegrasyon süreçlerinin gelir dağılımı üzerindeki etkisi incelenmektedir. Gelir dağılımının ölçümü için emek payı (% Gayri Safi Yurtiçi Hasıla-GSYH) değişkeni ve ekonomik entegrasyon için ekonomik küreselleşme endeksi değişkeni kullanılmaktadır. Ayrıca hem ticari ve finansal hem de emek piyasalarını etkileyebilmesi çerçevesinde toplam faktör verimliliği endeksi değişkeni teknolojik gelişmeyi ölçmek için analize dahil edilmektedir. Her üç değişken temelinde araştırılan ilişki dört farklı yöntem ile incelenmektedir. İlk aşamada birinci ve ikinci nesil panel birim kök testleri çerçevesinde serilerin durağanlık düzeyleri belirlenmektedir. İkinci ve üçüncü aşamalarda sırasıyla değişkenler arasındaki uzun dönem eşbütünleşme ve nedensellik ilişkileri araştırılmaktadır. Son aşamada ise değişkenlere ait uzun dönem katsayılarının yönü ve istatistiksel anlamlılığı analiz edilmektedir. Elde edilen ampirik sonuçlar, değişkenler arasında çift yönlü bir nedensellik ilişkisinin varlığına işaret etmektedir. Ayrıca kurulan modeller çerçevesinde, değişkenler arasında uzun dönemli bir ilişkinin var olduğu görülmektedir. Uzun dönem katsayılarının yönü temelinde, ana akım yaklaşımın aksine, ekonomik küreselleşmenin ve toplam faktör verimliliği artışının emek payını olumsuz etkilediği görülmektedir. Bu açıdan mevcut çalışma heterodoks literatüre panel birim kök, panel eşbütünleşme, panel nedensellik ve uzun dönem katsayı tahminleri için kullanılan DOLS (Dynamic Ordinary Least Squares- Dinamik En Küçük Kareler) ve FMOLS (Fully Modified Ordinary Least Squares- Tam Değiştirilmiş En Küçük Kareler) yöntemleri çerçevesinde katkıda bulunmaya çalışmaktadır.

Küresel Gelir Eşitsizliği Artışı ve Teknolojik Gelişme: OECD Ülkeleri Özelinde Ampirik Bir İnceleme

Bu çalışma gelir dağılımı ve teknolojik değişme arasındaki ilişkiyi 1980-2019 döneminde seçili 26... more Bu çalışma gelir dağılımı ve teknolojik değişme arasındaki ilişkiyi 1980-2019 döneminde seçili 26 OECD ülkesi için Fark-GMM yöntemine bağlı olarak araştırmaktadır. Gelir dağılımının ölçümü için emek payı değişkeni, teknolojik değişimin ölçümü için ise toplam faktör verimliliği değişkeni kullanılmaktadır. Çalışmanın temel sorunsalı 1980 sonrası dönemde seçili OECD ülkelerinde artan gelir eşitsizliğinde teknoloji etkisinin ne düzeyde olduğunun araştırılması üzerine kurulmuştur. Bu açıdan çalışmanın temel argümanı teknolojik değişimin ulusal gelirden emek kesimine giden payı ilgili dönemde sermaye karşısında kaybedilen pazarlık gücü nedeniyle azalttığı yönündedir. Elde edilen sonuçlar dört ana kategoride özetlenebilir. İlk olarak, refah etkisi yaratmayan toplam faktör verimliliği artışının emek payını azalttığı görülmektedir. İkinci olarak, işsizlik oranı ve toplam çalışma saatindeki artış emek kesiminin pazarlık gücünü olumsuz etkileyerek emek payını azaltırken, sendikalaşma oranı ve toplu pazarlık gücü üzerinden hesaplanan ilave pazarlık gücü değişkeninin emek payını artırdığı görülmektedir. Diğer bir ifadeyle, emek piyasalarına ait kurumsal yapının gelişmesi bölüşümde emek kesimini olumlu etkileyen bir özelliğe sahiptir. Üçüncü olarak, ilgili dönemde seçili makroekonomik değişkenlerde meydana gelen değişimin sermaye-yanlı olduğu görülmektedir. Bu nedenle, emek payını olumsuz etkilemektedir. Son olarak, ilave pazarlık gücü ve işsizlik oranı değişkeni temelinde oluşturulan etkileşim terimine ait katsayıların pozitif olduğu sonucuna ulaşılmaktadır. Diğer bir ifadeyle, işsizlik oranının yüksek olduğu dönemlerde emek kesiminin sermaye karşısında pazarlık gücündeki düşüşünü ancak emek piyasalarının kurumsal yapısını geliştirerek telafi edebildiği görülmektedir.

Bu çalışma beşer yıllık ölçülen veriler ile gelişmiş ve gelişmekte olan 64 ülke temelinde 1990-20... more Bu çalışma beşer yıllık ölçülen veriler ile gelişmiş ve gelişmekte olan 64 ülke temelinde 1990-2019 yılları için emek payı ve uluslararası göç stoku arasındaki ilişkiyi dinamik panel veri yöntemine bağlı olarak araştırmaktadır. Gelir dağılımı sorunsalının göç olgusu temelinde araştırıldığı çalışmada literatürden farklılaşmak adına ilgili yazına iki açıdan yenilik sunulmaktadır. İlk olarak, iç göç ve dış göç arasındaki fark üzerinden ölçülen net göç değişkeni çerçevesinde gelir dağılımı sorunsalını araştıran çalışmalardan farklı olarak mültecileri de içerecek şekilde yaşadıkları ülke dışındaki bir ülkede doğanların sayısını gösteren uluslararası göç stoku değişkeni göç kavramının ölçülmesinde ele alınmaktadır. İkinci olarak, gelir dağılımına homojen bireyler açısından yaklaşarak kısıtlı bir gelir eşitsizliği formasyonu sunan Gini katsayısı yerine bireylerin heterojen üreticiler olarak benimsendiği fonksiyonel yaklaşım ele alınarak bölüşümün üretim sürecinde belirlendiği varsayılmaktadır. Bu açıdan üretim birimi olarak emek kesiminin ulusal gelirden aldığı pay çerçevesinde gelir dağılımını ölçmek için emek payı değişkeni kullanılmaktadır. Her bir regresyon analizi dizisi aynı modelleri göçmen nüfusun erkek, kadın ve toplamı olacak şekilde üç ayrı kategoride ele alarak gelir dağılımı-göç bağıntısını analiz etmektedir. Elde edilen ampirik sonuçlar kadın göçmen nüfusun ele alındığı regresyon katsayıları temelinde daha yüksek anlamlılığa sahip olsa da diğer iki nüfus katmanı için de geçerli olacak şekilde emek payı ile uluslararası göç stoku değişkenleri arasında negatif ve hem kısa hem de uzun dönemde istatistiksel olarak anlamlı bir ilişkinin olduğunu göstermektedir.

This section investigates the long-run relationship between economic freedom and income inequalit... more This section investigates the long-run relationship between economic freedom and income inequality in the control of several macroeconomic indicators such as economic growth, human development, and total population to reveal that whether the cointegration exists between the series over the 1995–2017 period in Turkey. Unlike the traditional econometric procedures on the cointegration analysis, we use a different type of approach produced by Bayer and Hanck (2013) which combines different cointegration methods in one method. The empirical results suggest that the series are cointegrated. In other words, the estimated models show that there is a long-run relationship between economic freedom and income inequality for the Turkish economy between the period 1995 and 2017.

2007/2008 Finansal Krizi’nden günümüze kadar geçen süre içerisinde yaşanan sosyo-iktisadi sorunla... more 2007/2008 Finansal Krizi’nden günümüze kadar geçen süre içerisinde yaşanan sosyo-iktisadi sorunların halen çözümlenememiş olması, mevcut ana akım paradigmanın çok boyutlu bir biçimde sorgulanmasını zorunlu kılmaktadır. Bu çerçevede güncel sorunlar, kapitalist birikim rejiminin 1980’lerden sonra değişen iç dinamiklerinin bir yansıması olarak okunmalıdır. Ekonomik, sosyal, politik ve kültürel alanlarda etkisini hissettiren bu değişim ve dönüşümlerin temelinde ise üç önemli gelişme yatmaktadır. Bunları temel başlıkları ile şu şekilde sıralayabiliriz: (i) Birikimin Finansallaşması; (ii) Neoliberal Politik Dönüşüm ve (iii) Sermayenin Tekelleşmesi. Günümüzün mevcut yapısı bu üç temel dinamik etrafında şekillenmekle birlikte, birikimin durgunlaşması ve buna bağlı olarak yaşanan ekonomik krizler başta olmak üzere birtakım ortak pratik eğilime maruz kalmaktadır. İşsizlik oranlarındaki artış, ekonomik büyüme hızında yavaşlama, hanehalkı ve finansal olmayan şirketlerin borçlanma düzeyindeki yükseliş, reel ücretlerde yaşanan durgunluk ve gelir dağılımında meydana gelen bozulma gibi sıralanabilecek bazı potansiyel sonuçların bu eğilime bağlı olarak
toplumsal işleyiş üzerinde önemli etkiler oluşturabileceği zaman içerisinde birçok ülke ölçeğinde deneyimlenmiştir. Çalışma içerisinde sistemin yapısal sorunlarına odaklanılarak bir bütün olarak ele alınacak olan mevcut kapitalist birikim rejimi, yaşanan ekonomik krizin arkasında yatan bileşenlerin özellikleri ve böylece varlığını sürdüren ana akım paradigmanın geleceği hakkında bizlere önemli ipuçları verecektir.

Elde edilen ampirik sonuçlar, ilgili konunun ana akım ve ortodoks yaklaşımlar tarafından ortaya konan hipotezlerden farklı bir yapıya sahip olduğunu göstermektedir. Diğer bir ifadeyle, enerji kullanımındaki artış ekonomik büyüme göstergesini azaltıcı bir etkiye sahip bulunmaktadır. Mevcut çalışma içerisinde bu negatif etkinin ölçeği hem kalkınma hem de farklı makroekonomik ve sosyal kontrol değişkenleri temelinde analiz edilmektedir. Ayrıca yeni fikir düzeyine ait oluşturulan değişken çerçevesinde teknolojik ilerlemenin ekonomik büyüme üzerindeki etkisi araştırılmaktadır. Hem kısa hem de uzun dönem analizleri her bir örneklem için benzer sonuçlar elde edildiğini göstermekte ve yapılan sağlamlık testleri ile elde edilen sonuçların istatistiki düzeyde anlamlı olduğu görülmektedir.

Bu çalışma ekonomik gelişme ve finans arasındaki ilişkiyi VAR analizine bağlı olarak 1970-2017 ar... more Bu çalışma ekonomik gelişme ve finans arasındaki ilişkiyi VAR analizine bağlı olarak 1970-2017 arası dönemde Türkiye ekonomisi için incelemektedir. Makalenin üzerinde durduğu temel hipotez, mevcut yıllar arasında Türkiye’de yaşanan ekonomik gelişme sürecinin ardında finans sektörünün liberalleşmesi mi yoksa daha fazla kuralların mı yattığının araştırılması üzerine kuruludur. Granger nedensellik analizine dayalı ekonometrik sonuçlar göstermektedir ki; Türkiye’nin ekonomik gelişme patikası finansal küreselleşme sürecinin aksine daha fazla regüle edilmiş finansal sektör ile ilişkilidir. Diğer bir deyişle, VAR analizine dayalı ampirik sonuçlar ekonomik gelişme ile finansal küreselleşme arasında nedensellik ilişkisi bulunmadığını belirtirken finansal regülasyonun ekonomik gelişme ile arasında çift yönlü bir nedensellik ilişkisinin bulunduğunu göstermektedir. Nedensellik analizine dayalı ampirik sonuçlara göre Türkiye ekonomisinin gelişme sürecinde finansal regülasyonun etkisi finansal küreselleşmenin aksine daha aktif bir rol oynamaktadır. Finansal küreselleşme sürecinin yasal düzlemde yansımalarının başladığı dönem itibarıyla elde edilen bulgular çerçevesinde önsel olarak belirtilebilir ki; finansal sistemde daha kuralcı bir iktisadi ve politik yapının ortaya çıkması Türkiye ekonomisinin özellikle kriz süreçlerinde daha sağlam bir altyapıya sahip olmasını beraberinde getirecektir.

The Reasons Behind the Declining Labor Share of Income: A Special Case for MENA Countries

The determinants of the labor share of national income have been investigated by numerous studies... more The determinants of the labor share of national income have been investigated by numerous studies. However, there is no consensus for what exactly affects the income differentials of workers, especially after the triumph of neoliberal policies prevailed after 1980s across all countries, including both developed and developing economies. While this is especially the critical issue for advanced countries, many developing economies have been noticed the importance of an increasing income gap between capital and workers. This paper seeks out the causes of a decreasing labor’s share in case of MENA countries, which are mostly classified as middle-income countries and are to a large extent categorized in developing group of countries, over the 1992-2013 period. To understand the reasons behind this decline in income shares of workers, the analytical context focuses on two major factors which are basically hinged on macro-level issues: (i) financial liberalization and (ii) financial development. The results show that financial liberalization is not sufficient for an increase in labor’s share but also the necessary level of development in financial markets and institutions should be implemented over time. In other words, in the context of selected MENA countries, the positive effects of financial liberalization on the labor share of income are only possible with a simultaneous increase in the degree of financial development in case of both depth, access, and efficiency.

Lionell Robbins’in de vurguladığı üzere; iktisat, insan tercihlerini, insan davranışını inceleyen bir bilimdir; Arş. Gör. Burçin YAZAR insan psikolojisi ve ekonomi arasındaki ilişkiyi analiz ederek, nasıl bir yönlenme olduğunu saptamaya çalışacaktır. İktisadi krizlerin verdiği uyarı sinyalleri Dr. Öğr. Üyesi Lokman KANTAR tarafından Türkiye örneği ile ampirik olarak sorgulanacaktır. Her bir kriz, mevcut sistemin sorgulanmasını beraberinde getirmektedir, Dr. Öğr. Üyesi İlknur TÜRKOĞLU tarafından gerçekleştirilecek ve krizlerin kültür mirası üzerinde yarattığı etkiler ortaya konacaktır. In this analysis, we try to show that the arguments of mainstream economics about the capital flows between those two kinds of countries are not reflecting the real economic processes over 2000-2011 period. To show that we use three measures which are current account balance, capital income and the intellectual property claims. These three measures lead us to argue that capital is not flowing into LMI countries from DCs, but rather it is flowing out from LMI countries to DCs. We also try to show the reasons behind the outflowing process of capital among these countries.

Financialization and the Distribution of Income: A Panel Data Analysis for OECD and Non-OECD Countries

The literature on finance has to a large extent focused on the finance-growth nexus, but only few... more The literature on finance has to a large extent focused on the finance-growth nexus, but only few have analyzed the effects of finance on the labor share of national income. This study discusses the special case of finance which is called the financialization of the economic system in order to understand the increasing degree of income disparities referring to the heterodox perspectives. In addition, it investigates the reasons why the financialization has increased its impact on economic relations and the factors that affect the income distribution between capital and labor. The explanations about financialization comprise of different characteristics which are both economic and social in the general framework. However, it is limited to understand the big picture for making an analysis of what is financialization as a whole. This is primarily problematic especially for investigating through its effect on income distribution. Therefore, I simplify the empirical framework by only focusing on the specific indicators which are particularly important for our sample countries (note that sample countries are classified as OECD and non-OECD in the empirical analysis). In this regard, I measure the financialization by the following three distinct variables: (i) dividend payments; (ii) interest payments; and (iii) stock market turnover ratio. I use time series cross-section data set of 89 countries over the period from 1995 until 2015 to explore the relationship between financialization and the labor share of national income. Besides the financialization indicators, the labor’s share is measured by the compensation of employees as a share of GDP. It is also adjusted from the self-employment to make a strong distinction for which income type is attributed to capital and labor. Finally, in addition to these, I take into account of the role of bargaining options of labor by considering the following variables: (i) unemployment rate, (ii) union density, and (iii) strike intensity. While the specifications are primarily estimated by using Driscoll-Kraay method, I also alternatively list the results of the estimations from the models measured by Panel Corrected Standard Errors (PCSE) and Feasible Generalized Least Squares (FGLS). The preliminary results suggest that there is indeed a negative relationship between payments including both dividend and interest, and the share of wages in national income. Other factors that can be accounted for the decline related to a decrease in the bargaining power of labor and economic globalization.

(2008) to reveal the relationship between the level of income and the degree of democracy in terms of advanced economies over the period 1960-2000. The study extends the initial findings of Acemoglu et al. (2008) in terms of econometric procedures by using the system-GMM method with collapsing instruments and allowing for more flexible – non-linear – specifications for the effect of income on democracy. The empirical results provide evidence of a positive and non-linear effect from income to democracy for advanced economies even after controlling for country-specific effects. In addition, with the same data set that of Acemoglu et al. (2008), we find that the coefficients of log GDP per capita are positive and statistically significant in most specifications by way of using the system-GMM method, in contrast to the results provided by Acemoglu et al. (2008). Furthermore, an interesting result is the square term of log GDP per capita which is negative and statistically significant. It indicates that while the initial stages of an increase in log GDP per capita have a positive impact on democracy, the latter stages show that this positive correlation turns into a negative possibly due to the changing dynamics of the power of income segments in the society.

So, it’s important to investigate its determinants. This paper aims to analyze the determinants of the liquidity risks in Turkey for the period 2007:Q2-2018:Q3. Our study concern to capture the effects macroeconomic variables and banks performance variables on Turkish banks liquidity , thus we have selected the most appropriate variables to define determinants of Turkish banks liquidity risks. Liquidity risk was measured by liquid asset ratio while financial performance by return on equity(ROE), net interest rate margin (NIM) and macroeconomic performance by gdp growth rate, inflation rate . In this context, the relationship between based on selected the variables was examined by ARDL Bound Test approach. The empirical results show that Turkish bank’s liquidity risk is determined by return on equity(ROE), net interest rate margin (NIM) and gdp growth rate. Findings indicate that return on equity(ROE) and gdp growth rate are positively associated with Turkish bank liquidity risk while net interest rate margin (NIM) is negatively associated with liquidity risk. On the other hand inflation rate does not have a significant impact on Turkish bank liquidity risk.

Difference-in-Differences (DiD) method is employed to solve the research question of this paper, which is whether or not there exist a significant change in differences between Turkish public and private banks’ ratio of securities (financial assets) to total assets during and after the crisis. This study concludes by suggesting that after the global financial crisis, securities to assets ratio of publicly owned deposit banks significantly differed from that of privately owned ones in Turkey.Compared to the private deposit banks, there has been a significant decrease in the specified ratio of public deposit banks.
