ADMISSIONS
We are excited you have decided to pursue your education at GIS. Please review the process below and contact us should you require more information.
Admissions
Thank you for your interest in Ghana International School.
GIS offers a curriculum based on the Cambridge International Early Years, Cambridge Primary & Secondary programme leading to the IGCSE and A Level examination. We also have a Pearson BTEC pathway in Music and Creative Media for students aged 14 years and above (i.e. Form 4 upwards).
Infant School pupils (Nursery – Class 2) follow the Cambridge Early Years curriculum, learning Numeracy, Literacy, History, Geography, and specialist subject experiences in Art, P.E., Computing, Music, and French. The curriculum is holistic, focusing on the whole child and connecting their development with the host country.
We also provide an enriching boarding experience for students in Form Two – Upper Sixth Form (Grade 7 – 12). It is a weekly boarding offering where students are required to return home at the end of each week (Fridays) and report back to the boarding house on Sunday afternoons (ready for the start of each school week). However, weekend stays are planned throughout the school year for the purposes of extended learning (academic support), Duke of Edinburgh Award activities, experiential learning opportunities, etc. These take place on selected weekends, for which parents are notified in advance. Students do not go home but to stay at the boarding house.
Please refer to our FAQ document, our Admission Age Guide and Boarding Programme Prospectus for additional information.
THE PROCESS
Stage 1: Completion of Forms – Parental Enquiry Form and Application Form
- These forms are available in digital versions through the Office of Admissions & International Partnerships and must be completed and submitted digitally to the Office. The Office does not accept printed, handwritten, scanned, or photographed copies of the form.
- The registration fee can be paid online or paid at a bank, into the GIS Account. The finance department will also accept POS (point of sale) payment for the registration fee only. No other payment is required at this point. The fee is $100 (USD), payable in cedis at prevailing exchange rates for all applications (Nursery to Sixth Form).
NB: The School is unable to proceed with an application without evidence of successful completion of all requirements under step 1 above.
Once the completed Application Form is received, the file undergoes a thorough review by the Admissions Team. If appropriate, the review will also involve Academic Management, the Counsellor, and the Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCo).
Stage 2: Entrance Assessments
All admissions into Ghana International School are subject to a successful entrance assessment, an interview with child and parent(s) in attendance and a thorough evaluation of previous school reports. These will include a confidential report obtained from an applicant’s current school Principal. The aim is to determine the school’s ability to fully cater to the needs of the child. Entrance assessments are administered in February/March before the academic year starts in September. Late admissions for international applicants may take place between August and December as required. Please note the following in relation to the administration of entry assessments.
- English is the language of instruction, therefore, entrance exams are conducted in the English Language.
- Applicants for Year 3 to Form 3 are assessed in Maths and English.
- Prospective Form 4 students are assessed in Maths, English, Combined Science (Biology, Chemistry, Physics), and an optional language (French or Spanish).
- Entry assessments for late entrants (international applicants) may be conducted in August or as required.
- Non-resident applicants may, at the discretion of the Head of Admissions & International Partnerships, be assessed in their country of residence, and in collaboration with the child’s current school.
Note: Entry into Lower 6th Form does not require applicants to sit entry assessments. Candidates are required to submit results of IGCSE or an equivalent examination in support of their applications.
Acceptance/Denial of Placement
The decision to make an offer of admission is always made by the Principal.
- After the assessment, interview, and submission of confidential student reports, Parents will receive a notification by email on whether their child will be offered a place or not.
