Robert (Bob) Reid grew up in Scotland’s beautiful border country. Hawick was home until it was time to go to university in Edinburgh. A degree and a PhD in Chemistry followed. It was in Edinburgh that Bob met and married Phyllis. Work opportunities took them south, and their son Simon was born in Cheshire and their daughter Charis some years later in Swindon. What an appropriate question at this time.

It is a mystery to me that after a stroke ( that I had in January) and after getting more increased mobility since the stroke over 8 months - in the past month when I have been doing more exercise so my ability to walk any significant distance has reduced and my walking has become much more of a stumble.

It certainly is a mystery - not sure it would be a plot for a book unless my stumbling caused some other event to happen. (less)

Well after the 300,000 word The Empress I find I have stalled somewhat half way through Audun's adventure to Morevia. No doubt his story will be told eventually but in the meantime? A friend suggested I try my hand at short stories. A very different story - 3000 words instead of 300,000 - brevity, try to get the story over quickly - great fun - very enjoyable. Now have 18 shorts under a generic ti Read more of this blog post »

"And just when you think it's over, "The Empress" continues the saga, and you go more in-depth into the world created by Robert Reid. I love how after reading book three, I told myself (and wrote in my review) that there is hope for potential stories " Read more of this review »

"Reading "The Empress" was an experience in itself. One of Robert Reid’s areas of expertise must definitely be his character creation, because the characters were dynamic and I found myself emotionally attached, in some way, to each one.The story focu" Read more of this review »

A great ending to the trilogy The Emperor, The Son and The Thief - who could have guessed that the last few chapters would take the reader back to lands and peoples last visited in White Light Red Fire. It was a surprise to me.

“At seventeen the young woman had worked out how to improve her future prospects; she would seduce the Prince.”
Robert Reid, The Emperor

“Raimund stepped down from the merchant’s wagon that had carried him from Tora, and stood for a moment taking it all in. He soaked in the noise, the smells, and the sights; the transformation of winter yielding its grip to spring, and new life. It was also time to renew his quest. It was time to find Aleana, and that meant he had to find passage to Boretar.”
Robert Reid, The Thief

“I believe the red stone was kept under lock and key in the dungeon far below Aldene Castle. I know that in 1507, when the Eldest visited Aldene, he was concerned about something dangerous that was held in Aldene’s dungeon.”
Robert Reid, The Thief

“It is all around us now, in one God-forsaken territory after another. Blood sacrifice in the name of a better future. Only the dead like Tollund Man have seen the end of it. All we seem to have learned so far is that such killing never ends, never will.”
Neil Oliver, Wisdom of the Ancients: Life lessons from our distant past

“Is there anything more dangerous than dissatisfied and irresponsible gods who don't know what they want?”
Yuval Noah Harari, Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind

“In order to understand how thousands of isolated cultures coalesced over time to form the global village of today, we must take into account the role of gold and silver, but we cannot disregard the equally crucial role of steel”
Yuval Noah Harari, Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind

“His gaze lingered on the ruins of the keep. Twenty-two years ago , he had made a promise in the shadow of those walls - a promise to uphold his family's claim to the throne.
In the end, he had done so much more than that. In the end, he had upheld his nation's claim to their kingdom.”
Robyn Young, Kingdom

“In so far as a story of the world can have a beginning, let it begin with Enheduanna , the first named poet.”
