Sick Woman Theory
In this incendiary manifesto, Hedva proposes the Sick Woman as an identity that gets ascribed to anyone who is defined by care under capitalism, either that you work in care, or that you need it, and who doesn’t need it? No matter your gender, if you are defined by care, you are feminized, rendered ‘weak’ and ‘vulnerable’, and devalued according to patriarchy. The ‘sick’ part of the Sick Woman speaks to an identity that gets defined by ableism: if you are defined by the care you give and take, you are a person who is unproductive, or a drain on resources, or dysfunctional, or disordered, or incurable, or worthless, etc, ad infinitum – in other words, your embodied existence deviates from ableist standards. Hedva's analysis looks at how ableism is perhaps the most pernicious ideology, because it’s the very bedrock of how we decide whether a person is valued or not. White supremacy, racism, misogyny, transphobia, heteronormativity – all of these things need ableism in order to work because they are means of oppressing people based on an invented hierarchy of superiority and normativity.

Hedva’s practice cooks magic, necromancy, and divination together with mystical states of fury and ecstasy. There is always the body — its radical permeability, dependency, and consociation — but the task is how to eclipse it, how to nebulize it, and how to cope when this inevitably fails. Ultimately, Hedva’s work, no matter the genre, is different kinds of writing, whether it’s words on a page, screaming in a room, or dragging a hand through water.
Hedva is the author of the novel On Hell (2018), which was named one of Dennis Cooper’s favorites of 2018. Veel stof tot nadenken en daardoor interessant. Zorg als anti-kapitalistische daad bijvoorbeeld, of het inzetten van het woord 'vrouw'. Ik probeer me nu te bedenken hoe je dit zou moeten verbinden aan de huidige cultuur van zelfdiagnostiek en praten over mentale gezondheid. Het is ook weer tijd voor een stukje zelfreflectie haha.
Ik heb moeite met de elementen in de briefwisseling over droominterpretatie. Persoonlijke reflex is om dat soort dingen niet al te serieus te nemen wanneer we iets anders dan onszelf willen begrijpen. Het voegde bovendien niet zoveel toe. Behalve het gedicht (?) over de hamster, dat was dan weer kunst.

"Wanneer ziek zijn een afwijking van de norm is, staat dat ons toe om op dezelfde manier over zorg en steun te denken."
Inspirerend politiek essay over (chronisch) ziek zijn in een kapitalistische samenleving die hier niet voor gemaakt is. Gevolgd door een briefwisseling tussen Asha Kamari en Pelumi Adejumo, waarbij ze hun gedachten uiteenzetten, wat mij ook meer helderheid bracht.
Wat ik mooi vond is hoe meermaals benadrukt werd hoe in realiteit ook gezondheid een (vaak fluctuerende) schaal is, ipv een binair wel of niet-ziek zijn. Deze manier van kijken maakt zo veel meer ruimte voor zachtheid, menselijkheid en onderlinge nuance.
"De obsessie met het hebben van optimale gezondheid, gezelligheid, 'het moet wel goed gaan', heeft iets onnatuurlijks en zelfs onrealistisch. Dingen zijn moeilijk, blue, mooi, chronisch, vreugdevol en ongeneeslijk, en dat is de conditie van de mens. De conditie van de mens is de kwetsbaarheid van de mens."
Het sentiment van het kwetsbare leven, vol ziekte en ongemak, waarbij zorg dragen voor elkaar zo belangrijk is (en in een kapitalistische maatschappij een daad van verzet) deed mij ook denken aan de inzichten van Dirk de Wachter (groot fan van). Waarbij die essay meer politiek gekleurd was.
Een heel mooi essay met nieuwe inzichten, waarvan het goed zou zijn als we die allemaal wat meer zouden integreren in ons denken.

Amazing writing on the ableism that is deeply rooted in capitalism; to simply exist as a "disabled" (which means whatever, any form or any way) person in capitalism is (perceived) political. A body, a trauma, poverty - an existence should never be political.

Als mensen een paradigmaverschuiving nodig hebben wat betreft hun blik op zorg, zorgen, ziekte en ziek zijn in relatie tot de hedendaagse realiteit die onderworpen is aan/verrot met kapitalismse, is dit een zeer goed en nuttig boek.

Vijf sterren voor Hedva's korte essay, vijf sterren voor het de wereld insturen van een Theorie van de Zieke Vrouw. De briefwisseling waarmee deze Nederlandse vertaling werd aangevuld heeft daarentegen niet de gebalde kracht van het essay, maar laat wel zien hoe elkeen vanuit eigen levenservaring andere verschijningsvormen van Hedva's Zieke Vrouw (her)kent. Dankbaar applausje voor Uitgeverij Chaos die Johanna Hedva's werk met deze vertaling onder mijn aandacht bracht.

“Los psicólogos han construido un mito –de que en alguna parte existe algún estado de salud que es la norma, lo que significa que supuestamente la mayoría de las personas están en ese estado, y que aquellas que están ansiosas, deprimidas, neuróticas, angustiadas o infelices en general, son desviadas.”
Hedva comenta muchas cosas interesantes pero, sobre todo, habla de la temporalidad de la enfermedad y de cómo el sistema está hecho para que la enfermedad sea eso, temporal. La gente que vive con una enfermedad crónica, que no es apta para trabajar acaba relegada al fondo, porque ya sabemos que en el sistema capitalista, tu existencia solo es válida si produces.

One of the most impactful things I've read in a while. I cried multiple times cause it just hit so close to home and was so validating.
The influence from Alison Kafer is throughout this essay, but reimagined in such a powerful way. Some relavent Judith Butler is brought up during their introduction of the interdependence that is behind their ethics of caring.
Hard-hitting, concise, passionate, thoughtful, caring, this is essential reading.

"Sick Woman Theory is an insistence that most modes of political protest are internalised, lived, embodied, suffering, and no doubt invisible."
Johanna Hedva, in this short, compelling essay traces the development of their Sick Woman Theory; their diagnoses, their exclusion, their invisibility and how they came to powerfully contest Hannah Arendt's definition of the "political" as "any action that is performed in public".
What happens to your political subjectivity if you are rendered immobile by illness? If you lack access to care that your body, mind, agency requires necessary (health care, money for rent, validation, visibility) what happens to your force as a political subject?
"Who is allowed in to the public sphere? Who is allowed to be visible?" They provide powerful examples of women and men being discredited for their pain or ailments - men for often being discouraged from seeking professional psychological help and women for bearing the brunt off a longer waiting time in the ER in comparison to men or being discredited when expressing their ailments, which ultimately boils down to a sexist approach of women being "emotional", "exaggerated" etc, like in the incredible case of Kam Brock.
Hedva's voice is fierce and sure of itself and lends itself to a very inspiring, emotional read. They contest pillars of knowledge, in a badass way, and let themselves be supported by friendly theory. <3 loved.

El ensayo se Hedva nos hace cuestionar la lógica dle binomio de la salud: enfermedad y “bienestar”. Nuestrxs cuerpxs están enfermos debido a consecuencias históricas diversas; y esto le conviene al capitalismo. While this manifesto might fall short in a few areas (particularly in the way it reads), I found it to be beautifully metamorphic - the Sick Woman does not look like just one type of person.
Forging a political modality that is grounded in caring for one another is imperative if we are to sustain our collective fight against genocide, war, occupation, imperialism and colonisation.

Cortito y claro. Para pensar cómo abordar la pandemia. También sirve para revisitar las propias vulnerabilidades y de quienes nos rodean con una mirada hacia el cuidado.
