I haven’t met anyone who hasn’t had a bad management experience at work whether it was them as the manager or experience as the worker being managed. When I had my first experience as a leader, I was blindsided. I hadn’t had a managerial role yet since it was new in my career exploration. I had hoped that the management above me would help support and show what was expected. And like many, that didn’t happen. I wish this book had been available then. The authors, Potter and Kavanagh have created the perfect go-to book for managers old or new. Even business or MBA students would benefit from reading it.

The book has 14 organized chapters that layout important aspects of being a good manager. Topics include setting goals/expectations, managing time/ delegating, coaching/ feedback, etc. The concept that really resonated with me was something that the authors explain early. It’s the acronym T.E.A.C.H.E.R ( Transparent, Empathetic, Adaptable, Clear Communicator, Humble, Empowering, and Responsive) which are the 7 characteristics of being a good manager. I really appreciated the simple and practical, personal examples that were given not only with the acronym but throughout the whole book. I realize now my own mistakes that I made in my first role but also the roles of the managers I’ve had in my past. I think I will definitely have this book as a backup for any role that I may have in the future and for anyone I know going into management (as a gift).

For the gold star manager in the making

Potter’s The Successful Manager is a great resource for those wanting to move up into management, and is a good training material for the newly promoted. It’s general enough that it is relevant for managers in lots of fields and positions, and yet includes understandable examples and covers everything from hiring to delegation, to feedback and meetings.
And I mention training for managers for a reason, because as Potter points out, this is very important! Very few are given training, instead they just require experience for such positions. However, that doesn’t mean that person was well-trained, or trained at all! And as Potter states, it’s easier to train skills in than out.
The “you’ll figure it out as you go” mentality can be terrifying for new managers, especially for myself, as I didn’t really know an effective way of giving feedback (something that those I was giving it to could actually learn from). I really like the SBIS system that Potter introduces. It’s definitely worth a read!

This book was recommended in a leadership training class I took, recently. I found it to be inspiring and thought provoking:
--A virtuous cycle takes place when you become an outstanding manager. Great people flock to great managers, great people stick with those managers, and great people go above and beyond for those managers.
--It's not just what you do that matters- it's who you are a as a person and how you go about doing those things that sets you apart.
--Seek to understand other people first. Try not to default to lecturing or dictating. Rely on asking questions (i.e., "Why?" or Socratic dialog) to help guide team members to the ideal course of action.
--Amazon does not allow employees to use PowerPoint/slide presentations when communicating strategy. Instead, they require people to write strategy documents in the form of a memo. The reason for this is that prose forces a higher degree of clarity in logic and flow.
--One of the most overlooked aspects of in-person communication is the importance of non-verbal communication. Your body language, energy level, and tone says more to the other person/people than your words.
--As a manager, you aren't supposed to be doing everyone else's jobs, of course, or you wouldn't have a team. Yet many new managers struggle with relaxing control. Your end goal is "what can we do together to problem solve. I've contributed my piece, and then I step back."
--One of the characteristics we see in superb leaders is that they have clarity about where they want to go in the form of a vision and strategy, they consistently socialize it within and beyond their teams, and they have an achievable plan for how to get there.
--Ruthlessly focus on and eliminate any truly unnecessary tasks.
--Try not to give your associates too much feedback. Don't nitpick; focus on the important things and balance positive and negative feedback.
--Be solution oriented. Avoid raising general questions and problems.
--A weak team will hold you back. An outstanding team will have you punching well above your weight.
--Control what you can control and let go of the rest. Focus on being a good person above all else. Don't worry so much about what other people may be thinking about you.
--People remember you most for who you are, not what you accomplish

The Successful Manager is the best book on managing I have ever read. This book should be mandatory reading for every current manager and anyone who aspires to be one. If you are about to become a manager for the first time, read this book.

James Potter and Mike Kavanagh have created an easily readable, well written and smooth flowing book detailing managerial life.

What struck me over and over is how past people I knew as managers have made the mistakes highlighted in this book. It is a fact that, if those mistakes hadn't been made, I might still be working at that job. In some ways, bad management decisions helped me to a better life. That isn't the point of this book. This book will be key to creating a successful manager. The Successful Manager could be critically important to allow current managers to self evaluate. If you read this book and find you have made decisions that are pointed out as bad here, change your ways.

One of the best aspects of this book is the key point - give praise. Some managers are only heard from when a mistake happens. If an employee does a great job 19 days out of 20, he should be commended on those 19 days.

An absolute gem of a book for the management field. A brilliant work that is much needed and needs to be a must-read for every person affiliated with management.

Disclaimer: I received a copy from the author in the hopes I'd review it.

Excellent Resource! Well written with great content.

I never understood the Peter Principle as a college student… let’s face it, I needed the experience of the working world. Basically stated, it’s that people rise to their own level of incompetence. What it really means is that we’re promoted for our skills as individual contributors, without necessarily having the skills to succeed as a manager.
This book gives you the basic skills you need to succeed as a manager.

The authors use the TEACHER acronym:
“If you want to reach the heights of your potential and become exceptional as a manager, focus on being Transparent, Empathetic, Adaptable, a Clear Communicator, Humble, Empowering, and Responsive. Become a T.E.A.C.H.E.R.”

Loved the section on giving performance feedback, especially the 6:1 positive to constructive ratio, as this is an area where many managers fail their team members from not learning how to give timely feedback and do it well.

Although many people think the primary responsibility of a manager is managing their people, they also need to work with lateral organizations as well as their own management… and to manage those expectations and communications channels so that their own team can focus on the right stuff.

Great book and not just useful for managers.

As sequels to the evolution of management principles and practice, humans have become keen on getting down to the nitty-gritty of management functions. It has been ascertained, that managers control the subservient and manipulate resources to achieve success, whereas leaders guide team members with the utmost influence, inspiration and motivational forces, to achieve their smart goals. Leadership is part of the whole management process. Its cogency depends largely on the methods adopted by the leader or manager for the planned operations to be successful.
The Successful Manager was written by James Potter's intuitive desire to impart knowledge and improve the managerial skills of potential readers. The text is a substantial analysis of the intricacies of authority and control with emphasis on their peculiarity in the management of human and material resources to achieve set goals. It's driven by prudence, priority, a delegation of duties and time management. It's focused on the challenges in the leadership of an organised labour team such as unrest and possible labour crisis. The conceptual model is the management for the growth of an organisation by the efficacy of the managers and leaders. Readers will be enticed by the simplicity of the book which earned easily to read and discern, even if they’re not management experts.
The book is primarily intended for potential managers, leaders and aspirants to top management positions in organisations.

Teams are essential parts of any organization. But to evaluate and put together people in order to form a team is not easy. As it is not easy, either, to make them work and lead them to achieve objectives and goals. Most managers learn their role by doing and this makes them commit mistakes that can be avoided. The writers of this book have had first-hand experience in this field and, having in mind this lack of training and information for new managers, have created this excellent book that attempts at solving this problem.
“The Successful Manager: Practical Approaches” is a clear step-by-step guide for people who are in charge of forming and leading a team. The authors' writing style is simple and concise, making this book very easy to understand and to put into practice. Although it mainly talks about business companies, I could adapt and employ its invaluable pieces of advice in the field of education. I recommend it.

Managing a lot of people who come from different backgrounds, whose tastes and skills are so different, is not easy as it seems. One had to keep some strategies or tricks while dealing with a herd of people. 'The Successful Manager' authored by James Potter and Mike Kavanagh is for managers to be fully efficient. The book is a practical one setting example on the characteristics of top managers in the world and leading managers to follow their ideas. A firm or a company's success depends on the teamwork of the managers and the clients. One group alone can't contribute to achievement. A manager is solely responsible for the good work of his team and leading them.

I enjoyed this book as it can be useful for anyone who gets the obligation of a group not only in companies but also when works as the head of a project. This one is a gift for any manager who finds some difficulties when handling a bulk of people.

Informative and a great addition to any collection

This book could not have come at a better time. I am currently going to school for a management degree, and have always been told that I have the capability to be a manager or leader. The things I read within these pages have helped me really think about what sort of manager I want to be. I do not like conflict where I know I may inadvertently hurt the other person, but there is a section here for dealing with tough situations as a manager. Another area that I want to familiarize myself with is giving feedback. Potter goes into detail, describing how to give feedback and even help set goals. I truly enjoyed reading this book, and will refer to it again once I finish my degree and am in a place where I can apply for such a position. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to be in a management position, or is already in one and can benefit from reading it to improve themselves.

The Successful Manager written by James Potter and Mike Kavanagh simplifies the role of a manager for those beginning this profession, while sharpening the skills of veteran managers. Though a manager is seen as a leader, they ultimately are part of a team. If your team is unsuccessful, then neither are you. The authors of this book give you the knowledge you need to step forward, ideas to incorporate, and examples of poor leadership traps that weaken your team.

Most of us are managers or leaders in some areas of our lives; for a job, among our friends, in our homes. James Potter and Mike Kavanagh’s primary focus in The Successful Manager is for management where you work, but most of their lessons can cultivate a powerful leader in many areas. They inspire you to be a greater you and in turn inspire others.

Same as friends give advices and parents share experiences, authors James Potter and Mike Kavanagh provide, as mentors, wisdom and counsels in this book called “The Successful Manager”. From a practical point of view, with everyday examples and transformative insights, they give useful approaches for building and leading high-performing teams.

How to become and be a great manager, how set to set goals and expectations, how to motivate and inspire your team are just some of the lines in this valuable book. It wonderfully delves with prioritization, delegation, time management, coaching, feedback, reviews, running through a crisis and many other challenges.

I must admit that this was one of the best books of this kind I have ever read. It offered me thought-provoking information and intelligent advice for making positive changes in my working life for the way ahead.

Hats off to both Authors! Retain your managerial position!

The Successful Manager: Practical Approaches for Building and Leading High-Performing Teams is a book every aspiring manager should have, it is "be a successful manager 101". The tone of this book is inviting and while the authors speak of their excitement at being promoted there were anxiety and uncertainty as he functioned in the managerial position. Narrating in an approachable tone, one of the book's authors tells how his excitement upon being promoted spiraled down into anxiety as he became a manager. Three essentials truths were stated at the beginning of this book- Wanting the position, training, and retaining the managerial position. The authors truly explained what being a manager is all about.. 80% listening and collaboration with 20% working. The book is an enjoyable one and not a boring pointer book.

So many of us dream of being promoted, but then when it happens, we can be left feeling in over our heads. In James Potter and Mike Kavanagh’s The Successful Manager, they expertly answer and advise on what is needed to be the best manager and leader possible. Whereas a lot of books in the self-help genre can be boring and difficult to get through, the writing is light, applicable, and easily accessible to all audiences. Veering away from being accusatory as to the mistakes one could already be making as a manager, the book is encouraging and makes the case that anyone in any stage of their career has the ability to change and be the best possible version of themselves. A swift and easy read, The Successful Manager is an excellent guide and one that you will continue to gain knowledge from each time you read it.

If there is one particular person that greatly needs this book, it's me. I work in an administrative field and it requires a lot of management skills as I hold different people in a team. Reading The Successful Manager: Practical Approaches for Building and Leading High-Performing Teams by James Potter did help me learn a lot of things when it comes to managing people. I cannot really call myself a leader because I feel like I lack certain things to become one but learning this self-help book gave some light to my uncertainties.

The way the book was written was written in a very sensible approach. The details were very realistic and I feel that they can be applied so easily. I loved that the author related the contents of the book from his past experiences. If you are new to managing people in a business or company, this book will come in handy. The strategies are well thought out.

Though difficult, being a good manager helps unlock teams’ potential and this would not only benefit the company itself but also the leader’s ability to climb up ladders.
The Successful Manager: Practical Approaches is a book that gives leaders, whether new in their position or no, tools to become better in what they do. The book does not only provide information but also tips and pieces of advice for readers to follow.
It has been written in a very simple manner, which has invited me to read it in almost a week. After finishing the book, I have developed skills to make decisions faster, to relax when it comes to face my responsibilities and to organize teams better while being able to help them unveil skills they probably did not know they had.

Learning to be a good manager and a good leader.

This is one of the most difficult tasks in the professional life. James Potter and Mike Kavanagh, the authors of the book, provide us through everyday examples useful information to succeed as a manager.

It is interesting because it has practical advice and addresses some problems that may appear while we are working. Progressive managing with tips

In some areas as of recently, it's been a serious dilemma to get employees hired and working. Though this could be largely in part to the current situations faced in our society, this is in part due to the manager's lack of ability to manage in a way that will keep their employees. This guide shares approaches for managers to learn the best ways to build their teams to promote productivity and sustainability while ensuring that employees are retaining useful information to accurately build trust within their team. I liked specifically how this one elaborates on how to handle tough situations that could be faced in the workplace while also setting goals that can inspire the whole team.

This is a useful book aimed at those who are managing their own business and at those who are about to become managers. As it happened to the author of the book, there aren’t many resources available on how to take on this important role. For this reason, James Potter and Mike Kavanagh have introduced some main suggestions and pieces of advice to make this transition an enriching learning process. They have included some personal experiences and worth reading techniques to adopt the mindset that will guide readers and lead them to succeed. I found these tools really effective, practical and above all realistic. All in all, it is highly recommended!
