It's never good when the FBI show up in Aspen Creek looking for an alliance with the werewolves. Wild Sign, an off the grid community, is missing all of its townspeople. They have simply vanished. The land is listed as being owned by Leah, Bran's mate. Charles, Anna and the berserker, Tag are sent to investigate.
Wow! What a powerful story! I read through it so fast that I had to go back and make myself slow down and savor it a second time. Anna and Charles have one of the most amazing relationships in urban fantasy. The way that they compliment and support each other makes me so happy. Throw in Colin "Tag" Taggert and you have a force to be reckoned with.
We learn Leah's background in this book and how she came to be Bran's mate. I still don't like her as a character but I do at least sympathize with how she came to be the way she is. (Note: I re-read my review of Burn Bright and I may have mentioned several times that I pretty much hated her).
The characters in this series grow with each book. I love being able to spend time with them and learn new things about their lives. The secondary characters are well done. The storyline flows well and I feel apart of the plot. I enjoy when characters from Mercy's world are pulled into the Marrok pack. It's like visiting old friends.
The ending is a cliffhanger which has me chomping at the bit to read the next book. Alas, it will be a while before that can happen.
This is a wonderful series that I highly recommend.
Once upon a time, there was a small spring that, touched by the earth's sprit, bore a sparkle of magic scattered in its cold, pure water.
I truly read Once upon a time, there was a small spring that, touched by the earth's sprit, bore a sparkle of magic scattered in its cold, pure water.
I truly read my books cover to cover. The dedication of this book to Patty's husband, Mike, made me cry before I even started it. Mike died very suddenly last March. Even the opening lines of the book got to me. I had to put the book down and walk away for about half an hour before I could even start reading.
Bran is out of town (out of the country?) and has left Charles in charge of the Aspen Creek pack. He and Anna work at keeping peace and calm among the members even as Leah tries to undermine Charles. May I say here that I really dislike Leah? I simply do not see her appeal to Bran. Charles receives a phone call from Jonesy, the mate of wilding Hester. Wildings are wolves that are too broken to be a part of a pack but still fall under the Marrok's care. A trip to the depths of the forest finds Hester dead, a complex spy operation and clues of a traitor.
A decision is made to inform all of the wildings of the situation. Teams are created which pairs Anna with Asil. This is, of course, Leah's doing. May I say again that I really don't like Leah?
Asil was a bigger part of the story line than he usually is. I must say that the Mad Moor intrigues me. He is so scary that he fascinates me. I think that he and Anna make a formidable pair.
Charles and Anna are one of my favorite couples. I enjoy the nuance of their relationship and how it affects the pack as a whole.
Bran's disappearance and silence is a little strange. I understand how it fits into the timeline of the Mercy world but felt that it could have been resolved. Speaking of Mercy, I'm just about speechless over certain comments that I may have misconstrued. I guess we will see what happens with that.
Overall, this is a very good addition to the story. I'm glad that I read Silence Fallen before this book as a point of reference with Bran.
I recommend anything and all books in the Mercy/Alpha Omega universe....more

As Anna's birthday approaches, she and Charles travel to Arizona to visit and old friend and to possibly buy an Arabian horse for Anna. Anna wants a child and yet Charles hesitates. The trip begins as a pleasure excursion until They are drawn into the horror of kidnapped children and fae magic.
Charles' friend, Joseph Sani, is part of a werewolf/human family. Joseph is human and was at one time one of Charles' very best friends. He has not seen him in twenty plus years and is distressed to learn that Joseph is dying.
I loved the interaction between Charles and Joseph! It was a delight to discover what Charles was like in his "youth". Although Joseph's dad is the pack Alpha, Joseph has never expressed an interest in turning despite his failing health. The information on Arabian horses was vast and very well researched. I have heard that people thought it was overkill but I was intrigued. I am fascinated horses are not afraid of werewolves in this world.
The fae that is stealing children causes the FBI to get involved and Agent Fisher is dispatched to assist local Cantrip agents. Anna and Charles are also investigating because of the involvement of the Sani family.
Charles and Anna have grown so much as a couple. I appreciated that Charles was not on an assignment for the Marrok. It gives the reader a chance to just enjoy their relationship.
So many things made this an excellent book. The Native American history, the magic of the fae, Charles' interaction with a true friend, the horses and of course Charles and Anna's relationship.
