On a more direct level, it reminded me of You've Got Mail (and the adaptations I'm less familiar with), which was inevitable with the online friendship and in person animosity that Maria and Jay had.
That being said, this book did not feel like a carbon copy. It felt familiar, but explored the emotional journeys that Maria and Jay went through. It was well paced, there was a great build up to them becoming a couple, I liked how much they communicated with each other, I liked how much their friends and family effected them. I loved that Maria was trans and Jay was bi and while Maria worried about transphobia, it was never an actual issue in the book, especially from Jay. ...more

It's the best book I've read all year. It just grabs every part of you and has you completely captivated. This book made me think. It made me laugh. It made me cry. These kinds of books are rare and should be treasured. Rin is a fascinating character with a complicated arc and she is so . . . Great. The world building is just above and beyond and I want to memorize this book because of it. The author clearly poured her heart and soul into this book and I am eager to read what she has planned next....more

I might even pick it up again one day.
What I did read provided great commentary on writing and the publishing business. I loved that Darcy was demi. Her younger sister was riot. The romance interested me but it was so stressful!! Lizzie's story partly had me very invested and other times, I couldn't care less (like the romance).
Anyways, it's worth picking up and trying if it if it sounds interesting. ...more

So I read this back when it was a story published online. When I heard it was going to be published, I was over the moon. If you had told me it got better, I would not have believed you. It was already perfect. But it DID. There was more content, more character development, more plot. GUYS. It even got funnier and more emotional!!!! I highly, HIGHLY recommend this book. And here is my copy and pasted review from the first format of the book.
I loved this story so much. Like, you will not understand until you read it. The thing is about Sarah Rees Brennan is that you can tell it’s the same author writing, but not obnoxiously so, but in a comforting way. I know when I pick up something of hers that it will be funny and relatable and snarky in the way that reminds me of Lorelai Gilmore. And also touching and heartbreaking at moments. But I always forget the pure awesomeness of her writing until I start it.
Our main character is Elliot, who is grouchy and sarcastic. He reminded me of a mean Kami from Unspoken (another Brennan book), which will make sense if you read both. And despite the fact I am different than Elliot, I could relate. Specifically, the want to be a better and nicer person. I find myself reminding myself to be nice and patient as Elliot often does in the latter half of his story. And I loved his version of being a pacifist. Violence is stupid. Don’t do it.
On to Serene-Heart-in-the-Chaos-of-Battle, who gets bonus points for her name alone. Also, there were very few parallels to Harry Potter (let’s be real here, I can find HP parallels in any book) but Serene is Ron. She is loyal and brave and brash and a little too honest with many opinions, who is also slightly racist and sexist. Again, will make sense when you read the story. She is a riot. She is an elf, who comes from a female dominated culture, so she’s sexist. She will be like “Well, usually women fight, but Luke if you try, I am sure you will do fine”. It was awesome. One thing I didn’t like regarding Serene is more an Elliot thing, but I didn’t like the way he saw her. He had her on a pedestal and he saw nothing bad about her. But that’s a character thing not a writing thing.
Now to Luke. I love Luke. He’s how I imagine Scorpius Malfoy kinda (sorry, more hp references). So shy and awkward I want to hug him. And his family!!!! But I really want to talk about my ships. So I am!! I REALLY ship Elliot and Luke. Like, a lot. And I loved Serene but not with Eliot. But her bromance with Luke was hysterical. Like every time he called himself her sister in arms is equally touching and funny.
I thought the plot is well developed and the setting very imaginative. I found everything vivid and heart warming.
I could drone on and on about how amazing this book is but this post would never end. So all in all 5 stars out of 5. Recommended for anyone looking for something a little different (actually, a lot different) that’s funny and sweet and asking all the right questions. So I decided the other day at 1 in the morning that I would buy Tash Hearts Tolstoy by Katheryn Ormsbee and boy, do I not regret it. I cried happy tears twice and teared up at the acknowledgments. Now, I have read books with ace protagonists before, but Tash … Tash hit home for me.
I felt so comforted and validated reading this book. Tash felt like I did. She was going through the same worries and anxiety I was. This sounds fake, I’m probably just a prude, why don’t I want sex, how can I be human is humans are sexual beings and I am not sexual in the least? These all thoughts I’ve had and still struggle with every now and them. And seeing someone else going through what I have, what I am, was like a weight lifting off me.
“Because how could I like boys - want one to ask me out, tell me he liked me, loved me even - and not want to have sex with them? What if everyone on these forums was just … confused, like me?”
And even though having ace friends and reading blog posts by ace people, this was comforting in a way I had yet to experience. And seeing my thoughts articulated so clearly was … relieving. I got Tash and Tash got me. And I loved having that experience. It was amazing.
“I know what I want and what I don’t want. I’ve never wanted sex. Never. I’ve never understood why it has to be in every book and movie and television show ever made… I’m not scared, I just don’t want it.”
I related to a character in a way I have never been able to before, on a very deep and emotional level. I needed this book way more than I thought I did. If you are ace, you deserve this book. If you aren’t ace, this describes asexuality in a real and easy way to understand. I know I should talk about the other aspects of the books, so I’ll go over that real quick. Tash is a great main character, very flawed but also very loving The relationships in this book were great. Some of the most realistic I’ve read in a while. There were a few too many characters in my opinion, but I did know who everyone was, so it wasn’t too bad. The plot was really interesting, I loved exploring Internet fame and how it effects people Also the portrayal of the Internet was really accurate, which was nice I loved the family dynamics with Tash and her family Just all around a good book, with solid plot and characters (the relationships in this book were just amazing tho!!! Amazing!!!! I love good platonic relationships)
So go read this book, please!!! It needs all the support it can get....more

I was looking forward to a genderfluid protagonist in a high fantasy novel, but as a whole, this book didn’t do much for me.
First things first, I didn’t really connect with Sal. I feel like, their gender identity (I’m using they/them pronouns for the review for simplicity purposes) felt like it should have been more central part of the story as it was very important to them, but it didn’t translate well to the story into the reader. And besides Sal, there were no other people with non binary gender identities, which I feel like was a missed opportunity. Also the plot was interesting, but I kept forgetting what had just happened. And because most of the characters were numbers, I kept forgetting who was who. I did, however, enjoy both Maud, Elise, and Ruby a lot. I found all the parts with them quite good. The world building was pretty hard to follow. There were just a lot of info dumps about the history and the political system wasn’t very clear, despite that it was a major part of the book I really enjoyed the ending. I was not expecting what happened to happen or how it happen. I can’t say more about it without spoilers, but now because of it, I am considering picking up the next book. Also Elise and Sal’s relationship is sweet, so that is also motivation to reading book one I’d give it 3 out of 5 stars, recommended to those who like high fantasy novels, and don’t mind a rough start to a series and enjoy lots of action in books. There is a lot of diversity, which felt natural to the storytelling and is certainly something I want to see in more books. ...more

The characters were so great, they made this book. Like, everything else was wonderful as well, but the characters … they were funny and dynamic and realistic. I want to be friends with them and spend time with them. I actually think they would like me too. (okay, Alia and Nim and Theo would, but they are way funner so that’s okay) (also everyone but Diana was a poc and how awesome is that???)
I loved the way the island was described. It sounded even cooler than the movie Themyscira, which is saying a lot. And as cool as it was to see Diana in modern day New York, I wanted to see more of Themyscira. I also liked that we got more about the inner workings of the politics and society of the Amazons because they have a very interesting society.
This was a total adventure novel and I didn’t know how much I was craving one of those until I was reading this book. I was so happy, on my toes, in the middle if the action. Diana is a force to be reckoned with and I’m in awe of her.
Another aspect that I need to mention is the relationships. This book felt like a tribute to good friends. There were also good familial and romantic relationships, but the friendships were what really got me. They all love each other and it’s great because it’s shown in such a positive life.
Also, I love when the bad guys think what they are doing is for the best. It makes the villains that much better and that much more terrifying.
Conclusion: 5/5 stars, I was blown away by the adventure and spirit of this book and if you love adventure and superheros, you should read this book. ...more

It took me a while to get into it because it’s a little hard to follow the plot at the beginning and kind of choppy with the back and forth point of views. But it paid off in the end. So if you start reading and you’re not hooked yet, just give it a few chapters before you put it down. Why I continued to read this book was because I loved Han and Raisa. They are familiar archetypes, but they didn’t feel cliched, they felt different than the other characters. They were both similar in their identity crisis’ but in drastically different ways. My favorite part is when they were together. Although, I’m still fuzzy on why he kidnapped her. But whatever. Amon is a little annoying and very trite. A guard in love with his princess, torn between duty and his feelings is just not a trope that should be used anymore. Not a big fan of Micha either, but I felt a little sympathetic towards him at the end. I thought the setting is well thought out, but I wanted a map because I kept feeling lost and confused. I also wish there was a guide to the people and the tribes and the different people. There was a little too much for me to keep up with. I am very excited for the next book, which I do not have yet, despite the fact it’s out. Recommended to those who like high fantasy novels in long series, and don’t mind long introductions. 4 out of 5 stars and high hopes for the next books. ...more

I thought it is a solid add on to her other novels and a great collaboration. I kept forgetting two authors wrote this novel.
My favorite part about this book is the mythology behind the superheroes and villains. The rivalry and dishonesty between the two sides isn’t that original. The “good guys” are actually bad guys isn’t particularly new nor inventive. But it is a good take on it. I’m interested to know more mythology.
As for the characters, I expected more girls on the team. And in the book. Also characters of color. I feel like there should be more diversity for such a modern book in this day and age. But they are a cute team. Kenna is hysterical, she’s scrappy and relentless. And all the characters have great chemistry and their journey becoming a team felt very honest and slightly dysfunctional. It is adorable.
This is a standard YA novel about superheroes, nothing mind blowing or original. A little intense near the end, and I am definitely reading the next book. I recommend this book to anyone who likes superhero novels and enjoys a good YA novel. 4 stars out of 5 in my opinion. ...more

Infadous staFor those of you who don’t know, infandous means to odious to be expressed of mentioned. It will make more sense when you finish the book.
Infadous starts with the story of Sleeping Beauty, the one most people don’t know. Let’s just say, it would at least be rated R if that version became a movie. And it certainly wouldn’t be Disney. And there are a few other stories also told throughout story, like Persephone’s, and tied them into the story. It is a great way to tell a story, and the subtle foreshadowing and nods to the story were great. Also, do NOT read this book if you are sensitive to any sort of language or sex.
The main character is Seph. Seph isn’t like most YA heroines, if any. Her tone is slightly remiss of Holden Caulfield, but that’s because they are both pessimists with a bit of an holier than thou complex. But she is NOT Holden Caulfield, and this is certainly not Catcher in the Rye by any means. This is gritty and terrifying, and if you plan to read this book, you will want to read it with someone or find other people who have read them because this is the type of book that needs to be talked about. Back to Seph, she is strong but broken. And you don’t know why because even though her life kind of sucks, she has a mom who loves her and a home and friends. And then you find out. Cause this is her story. And it is messed up.
SPOILERS
So did anyone know about Felix? Did anyone? Because I flipped. And creeped out. Bad enough he’s a grown man and she’s a child. (By the way, it’s illegal. Statutory rape. Felix is in the wrong.) And it’s gross.
END SPOILERS
Seph’s art and the descriptions of them were so great, I really want to see it now. Also, her mom is interesting. All the other characters besides Seph felt 2 dimensional, as if Seph couldn’t completely understand them. Like, they would be more complex with a story of their own.
This book as a whole is amazing. I don’t know if I enjoyed this book, but it has my utmost respect. I’m giving it four stars because I can’t give it anything lower. I recommend this book to anyone who wants anything different from anything else and doesn’t mind gory details of real life. Just really an amazing book. And please talk to me about it, if you have read it or plan to.

I should say tI did not know this book was coming out. No clue, until I was at the library and I saw it. I was ecstatic!!! And I wasn’t disappointed.
I should say that this is Batty’s story. Ben, their younger stepbrother, narrates a few chapters but they revolve around Batty. Rosalind, Skye, and Jane all have parts and so does their dad but they are much smaller parts. Jeffery and Tommy both visit but not for very long. The other books have revolved slightly more around one sister than the others, but all the sisters narrated. So I was put out not getting the others sisters povs. They did have their own storylines, but I found them less relatable not getting their direct thoughts. I did enjoy Batty’s story. I found her very realistic and she had grown up from the last books. She is the same Batty but older. I thought it is very well done. Batty is still shy and loves animal, but now she is the middle child instead of the youngest. Very interesting change in her. I thought her storyline is very relatable and a little heartbreaking.
Another thing I liked but also didn’t is that Nick kind of took over the sisters roles. I like Nick, but I like the Penderwicks more. It was just really annoying that one of the sisters could have replaced Nick in most of his scenes. He’s cool, but he just doesn’t hold the same connection to the readers as the sisters do.
By the way, I will always ship Skye and Jeffery. And Rosalind and Tommy. I really wanted more of them. And Jane with one of her books.
So now I really want to talk about this book. The first is still my favorite but this one is as good as the others. So 4 stars out of 5, very cute and lovable, just what I needed. ...more

And I so should The Night Circus has been recommend to me numerous times and I finally picked it up to read for my Book Club. The day of the meeting. And I so should have read it earlier. I was completely captivated and enchanted by the story and magic of the book. It was beautifully written, I could picture everything. What I disliked about this book was the ending. Spoiler alert: Celia should have committed suicide. The book was leading up to a dark ending with death. Yet, the author copped out in the end, everyone is alive and happy. I was disappointed. End of spoilers I loved the circus the most. The vivid detail, the concept, the purpose of it. Such a brilliant and original idea. I liked the game and the players. The characters were such a small part of story, they barely even mattered. It was like Marco and Celia and the people of the Night Circus were puppets in the circus and the “father figures” (I forget their names) were the puppeteers. I read somewhere that there are four main elements to a book and a good book needs two well done and one decently done. The Night Circus had gorgeous writing and a unique setting. The characters and summary were fine but compared to the rest of the book, they were somewhat insignificant. The time line messed with my mind a little, but I think it was because I read it so fast. A note about the setting first: I love books set in the South because it’s described like an alternate universe. I mean, it kind of is, for me at least. The culture shock is insane. Like books set in the South explain the rules of the South because it’s a different from every other place in America. Which isn’t wrong. And if you want more books set in the South: The Caster Chronicles and Rebel Belle.
The book starts from Eva’s point of view. She’s one of the popular girls who lives down South in a tiny town. She’s the town’s sweetheart and actually a good person. Not a brat, but makes some stupid choices. (She’s a teenager, she doesn’t make an unreasonable amount of stupid choices, unlike some characters) I like her. I also like Claire. She’s a good friend and a good person. I thought hearing the story through her point of view gave the audience a nice look at Eva and the other characters.
What set this book apart from some other books is Judge. Showing the story from the villain’s eyes is not a new concept but the sense of how real and twisted he is felt so threatening as the book continued. I was seriously creeped out.

Partly because I picked up this book thinking is was a cute, fluffy book, like a Stephanie Perkins novel. Maybe in a few years, I could reread it and enjoy it more. But yesterday, I wanted a fluffy book to relieve me of stress. This is not that book. This book deals with friendship, family, and a coming of age for Amber, the main character, in a semi depressing way. The problems that Amber faces are very realistic and messy. This book was not all tied up and pretty at the end. It was a very ugly side of life. Not as ugly as it could have been, but with talk of drugs and adutery, it wasn't pretty. I loved C. A. but the rest of the characters didn’t interest me. All very respectable and realistic, yet they felt bland to me. Also, I read this in the dead of night, so that didn’t help. Not that the end was the only good part of the book. I just wasn’t captivated until the end. The point is that the beginning of this book and the middle is that it picks up. The book as a whole was good. I thought Call is a riot and I enjoyed that he is not a cliche character. He has a very distinctive voice. I thought the premise of this book would make it better but they ruined it with the love interest. I was enjoying it up until Ash showed up.
There were good parts of the book. The world was very cool and a little cliche but not that much. I also loved the character of the Lady of the Lake (also I kept thinking of Spamalot whenever I saw her name). She was so twisted and evil but at the same time I felt very sympathetic towards her. I would rather the book be from her POV. Also, I want to see more of Garnet because he just made me think of Adrian from Vampire Academy. Annabelle was cool. I liked her too. She was very sassy, which is hard to pull off with a mute character.
Didn’t like Violet. She was kind of there. And I hate “I love you because…” speech and then they list all the personality traits that have yet to be seen in the book.
