With periapical surgery consisting of exposure of the apex, root resection and preparation of a cavity that is hermetically sealed, we will correct the persistent defects. The combination of this surgical technique with retrograde obturation provides high success rates. There are several widely used retrofilling materials, such as: IRM, Retroplast, SuperEBA or mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) whick allow a retrograde sealing of the preparations. A case of a patient with recurrent apical lesion, describes the surgical technique of apicectomy and retrograde filling to preserve an upper lateral incisor with failed root canal retreatment and symptomatic persistent apical lesion.

The review was conducted according to PRISMA guidelines, performing an electronic search in four databases (Pubmed, Web of Science, Cochrane, and Scopus), complemented by a manual search up to April 2022. Four articles were selected for analysis. The Newcastle-Ottawa Quality Assessment Scale tool was used to assess the quality of evidence of cohort studies, and the Cochrane bias assessment tool was used to assess the quality of evidence of randomized clinical trials. The study included 1089 patients restored with 1984 dental implants, with follow-up periods ranging from 20–240 months. Cases presenting lower serum vitamin D levels obtained slightly worse results in terms of marginal bone loss. Longer follow-up periods are needed in order to determine whether serum vitamin D levels aff...

Introduction When dental implants are installed and subjected to functional loads, marginal bone ... more Introduction When dental implants are installed and subjected to functional loads, marginal bone resorption is frequent, also in sites not affected by peri-implantitis, and it can be a critical factor that will affect the aesthetics and longevity of the implant because it is associated with an increased risk of peri-implantitis and soft tissue collapse. Objective To assess the peri-implant marginal bone loss and the survival percentage of implant restorations that present internal and external prosthetic connections. Material and methods A systematic review of the literature was carried out. Various information sources were consulted such as PubMed, Embase, Ovid, Scopus databases. For the search process, the methodology approved by the PRISMA Guide was followed. Results 5 articles were found that met the established criteria. In these articles, 2,866 patients rehabilitated by means of 6,455 implants were registered, of which 3,057 were restored with an external hexagonal prosthetic ...

Despite several proposed technical approaches, there is still a lack of consensus on which should be considered the gold standard procedure, even-though in the last decades, the use of collagen-based devices allowing a tension-free direct neurorrhaphy has been used. A systematic search of multiple electronic databases and hand searching was conducted to assess the level of evidence behind the use of type I collagen devices to treat nerve injuries after oral surgery procedures. After screening, four articles (one case series and three retrospective studies) including overall 65 patients suffering from inferior alveolar (IAN)/lingual nerve (LN) injury after mandibular wisdom tooth extraction, met the inclusion criteria and could be included. The Oxford Centre for evidence-based medicine (OCEBM) scaling system was used to evaluate the quality of the included studies...

Patients who suffer these extensive defects tend to have a compromised oral-nasal partition manifesting as hypernasal speech, fluid leakage into the nasal cavity, and impaired masticatory function. 1,3 Maxillary defects can be managed by either a surgical or a prosthodontic approach. Surgical closure with a flap allowing for primary closure of the maxillary defect is the standard procedure in most developed countries; however, several factors can Purpose: To systematically review the current evidence on clinical and patient-reported outcomes of implantsupported palatal obturator prostheses. Materials and Methods: An electronic search of the PubMed, Web of Science, and Cochrane databases was carried out in June 2019. The titles and abstracts of all articles were screened by two independent reviewers. The references of the subsequently selected studies were further screened for potential articles. Assessment of the selected full texts was performed independently according to established inclusion and exclusion criteria. The quality of the selected studies was determined using the Newcastle-Ottawa scale. Interrater agreement on study selection was calculated using Cohen kappa statistic. Results: The search yielded a total of 2,797 records. Ten studies were selected for data extraction, with a Cohen kappa value of 0.856. Five studies were prospective, and five were retrospective. The survival rates for conventional implants ranged from 21.42% to 100%, whereas for zygomatic implants, the survival rates varied from 30% to 100%. Four studies reported prosthodontic complications, with screw loosening being the most common. Patient quality of life (QoL) was analyzed in six studies. Conclusion: In spite of the limitations of the present review, it can be concluded that the clinical outcomes are acceptable in terms of survival rates, implant and prosthodontic complications, and QoL associated with implant-supported maxillary obturator prostheses. QoL of implant-supported prostheses in these patients are acceptable. The general study design was not homogenous between studies.
