SEDIMENTOLOGY AND PALEOENVIRONMENT OF THE SANTA ROSITA FORMATION (LATE FURONGIAN-TREMADOCIAN) IN ... more SEDIMENTOLOGY AND PALEOENVIRONMENT OF THE SANTA ROSITA FORMATION (LATE FURONGIAN-TREMADOCIAN) IN THE NAZARENO AREA, CORDILLERA ORIENTAL, SALTA PROVINCE, ARGENTINA. The sedimentology of the Santa Rosita Formation (late Furongian-Tremadocian) in the Nazareno area, Cordillera Oriental, Salta Province, is studied herein. In this locality, a 650m thick succession is assignable to the upper part of the formation, and consists of a lower part dominated by sandstones and an upper part characterized mainly by shales. The studied section includes several sedimentary facies (A: Laminated and massive black shale; B: Green and dark gray siltstones with intercalations of thin sandstone beds; C: Massive mudstone with intercalated combined-flow rippled sandstone; D: Interbedded hummocky cross-stratified sandstone and mudstone; E: Amalgamated sandstone with hummocky cross-stratification overlapping), which characterize different open marine environments dominated by storms.
