Çatalca has hosted many civilizations, with a history of 2500 years. The Population Exchange Treaty signed between the Turkish and Greek Governments in 30.01.1923 was the first of its kind in history because it was legalized by international laws, which enforced the citizens of the two countries be exchanged compulsorily on the basis of religion. Greek Orthodox Turkish citizens, and the Muslim Greek citizens were both forced to leave their houses and homelands. Çatalca was a residential area where Orthodox Greeks and Muslim Turks used to live together before the population exchange. The immigrants from Greece were settled in Çatalca in the residences left by the immigrants fromTurkey. Çatalca has 9 different protected areas and one of them is historical urban site in Kaleiçi neighborhood, which has unique traditional residential texture. In Kaleiçi there are significant civil buildings and architectural structures which need immediate restoration and preservation projects. Population Exchange Museum is located also in this neighborhood. The aim of the study is to evaluate the architectural and cultural heritage of the district in the context of population exchange and the story of how the Museum was founded in 2010.

There are areas where thinking and design skills of the students are improved yet it is different from other courses. Increased number of students for each academic member in the project courses conducted through a mentor system has resulted in failure to sustain project-oriented education actively and reduced the productivity quality of education. Accordingly, the purpose of this study is to address the educational methods applied in various forms in the design studio courses of Interior Architecture departments in Turkey.

Education models can be varied with different training techniques. The design approaches introduced during the design process, which forms the basis of design education, gain meaning through sketching “with free-hand drawing” which is an effective communication tool for the profession. Sketching ensures fast development and introduction of opinions, serving as an active transmitter of visual expression. The computer technologies that are advancing rapidly today turns the traditional design, the “free-hand technique”, into an element with a conceptual impact on the design process. The study aims to discuss the “process of sketching” behind the design factor in the architecture and interior architecture education in Turkey and to analyse the method of sketching as well as its application styles, design, presentation, education, process and results, discussing the importance...

The true material selection plays a key role for the sustainability. This study aims to understand the smart materials because for designing and building a sustainable future the impact of these materials are significant. Smart materials offer different and significant solutions for various architectural demands. They can be generally defined as the engineered materials that perform special tasks. These are the materials which have one or more properties that can be altered by external stimuli like temperature, moisture, electric field etc. Basic types of smart materials are normally used in conjunction with many other materials. With the conjunction of other materials; devices, components, assemblies and systems can be produced. Complex functions are needed for using these materials in design context and single materials cannot alone respond many demands. Their potential is already recognized by the architects and they will be inevitable elements for the future projects with enhanced properties. This study also aims to determine the potential of nanotechnology which has the potential to offer architecture an abundance of smart materials that will be precisely engineered to perform specific tasks and energy concious design.

Abstract Cittaslow approach is founded as protection to fast living way destroying life. Respecful to historical, cultural and natural heritage, cities which are small but their quality of life are big, constitute the main point of the Cittaslow (Slow City) movement. Cittaslow which began in Italy and spread around the world shows up as different city model in 10 years. Cittaslow movement, the most important goal of which is to increase the life quality of the local community and its visitors, became an international network in a short period. Cittaslow which can also be considered as the model of a local development has the characteristics of offering the opportunity that reveals numerous historical and cultural wealth of country. Hundreds of our cities which have the different criteria of Cittaslow could be accepted the Cittaslow Union. TRADITIONAL TARSUS HOUSES AND CONSTRUCTION SYSTEMS ABSTRACT Mersin is one of our important cities in the Mediterranean Region of Turkey, and one of its district, Tarsus, has hosted many civilizations in the past. Tarsus traditional residential architecture is greatly influenced by the culture and climate of the Çukurova geography. Stone, wood, and adobe were used in great harmony in the architectural formation of houses, which are ranged on each side of narrow street. Traditional Tarsus houses, which are around 250, are in part under the protection and in part destroyed and cut off from the original texture. The facades of the buildings constructed by stone are largely protected but deterioration is observed on wood elements of internal structure. Primarily the restoration and surveying projects of registered houses should be prepared and they should be protected. Restoration should be immediately made by unique materials and also continuous maintenance and repairing is highly recommended.
