Hello, Anon!

This is going to differ depending on who you ask, but my take on it is that, yes, traditional and non-traditional are different! From my experience as a reader and writer, here are some points that separate them.

Traditional

  • The typical alpha/omega pair.
  • Hierarchy is alphas on top, betas usually in the middle, and omegas usually on the bottom.
  • Omegas are submissive, breeding machines and that’s pretty much it.
  • Betas don’t have instincts or scents and are just like normal people.
  • Everyone pretty much acts as the typical alpha, omega, or beta stereotype.
  • These stories (if they are not PWP) are usually either:
  • About an alpha hero love interest who is revolutionarily and actually treats their omega love interest like a person. Together they fight society and their cruel treatment of omegas.
  • Dark and it’s not a good time for the main omega/s.

Non-Traditional

  • More than alpha/omega pairings!
  • Hierarchy isn’t set
  • Betas actually have a role in society.
  • Omegas are more than sexual beings/mothers/slaves.
  • People are diverse in personality and how they act.
  • More like actual society.

People will disagree with me, and that’s okay because Traditional vs Non-Traditional Omegaverse is not the same for everyone!

Welcome to my beginner’s guide to writing Omegaverse! Here are some questions you can ask yourself while worldbuilding, but they are not all necessary! This is a pretty detailed guide, so pick and choose what applies to your omegaverse!

The first step I would recommend is doing some research! Look up basic guides. I put some links in this starter kit for examples and references. Now that you know a few things and are familiar with some common terms, you can start expanding and making it your own!

The Basics

  • How are omegas treated?
  • This is probably the most important question on the list.  Omegas are usually at the center of worldbuilding for omegaverse, even if writers do it unconsciously, so how omegas are treated often shapes all of society. Of course, this is not set in stone. If you want an alpha-shaped or beta-shaped society, go for it. Keep this in mind as you worldbuild.
  • What are some things you want to include in your omegaverse?
  • What are things that are not acceptable in your omegaverse?
  • Here is an example post of things I will never support (as a normal part of life) in omegaverse.
  • Do you want your omegaverse to be more non-traditional or traditional?
  • What’s the difference? 
  • What is your favorite thing about omegaverse?
  • Is your omegaverse NSFW heavy?
  • Are you more focused on the NSFW or SFW aspects?
  • What time period is your omegaverse set in?
  • Is your omegaverse based more on romance or platonic relationships?
  • When worldbuilding, I tend to be more invested in platonic relationships than romantic ones, so I have a lot more headcanons revolving around pack dynamics than mate headcanons.
  • Does your omegaverse have any special features? True Mates? Pack Bonds (mental links that packmates can feel and express emotion through)? Animal Shifters?
  • Who’s on top? What does the hierarchy look like?
  • For example, many people set their hierarchies either as Alphas on top or everyone as equal.
  • How much power do the dynamics have over each other?
  • For example, can Alphas control Omegas at will? This also ties into hierarchy.
  • What is the history of your omegaverse?
  • What is considered r*pe and consent?
  • Is there a difference between sex and dynamic?
  • Is primary gender (male, female, other) different from alpha, beta, omega or are they one in the same?
  • What does submission and domination look like? How does it impact day to day life?

Relationships

  • Is polyamory a part of your omegaverse? How are polyamorous relationships viewed?
  • Non-traditional pairings? Which pairings are looked down upon, if any?
  • For example, Beta x Alpha or Beta x Omega relationships are sometimes looked down upon in more traditional omegaverse set ups.
  • How do people become mates? Is there a mating bite? A ceremony? Do they spend a mating cycle together?
  • Are there mating traditions such as giving your partner a collar?
  • What does courting/dating behavior look like? Is it strict or more relaxed?
  • Do the packs of the parties involved need to consent to the courting beforehand? Is it arranged? Does it reflect modern society dating? Are interactions between parties supervised?

Society

  • What are problems in society specific to omegaverse?
  • In my omegaverse, the Omegas’ Rights Movement is a very large and pressing issue.
  • What is socially acceptable? What is not?
  • Disciplining mates in public? Forcing submission? Consent before heats?
  • How are education and jobs impacted by dynamic?
  • Can everyone work? Are there limits to what jobs people can hold?
  • What is considered appropriate and inappropriate behavior around strangers? Friends? Mates? Pack?
  • What is typical fashion of each dynamic, does it differ based on dynamic?
  • For example, Omegas may wear collars.
  • How do people rebel against stereotypes? What are the consequences?
  • How does presenting change social life?
  • How do people of the same dynamic interact with each other?
  • For example, sometimes, Omegas are best friends and need omega socialization, other times they hate each other and view each other as competition.
  • How is each dynamic treated in the workplace? Hospital? Restaurants?
  • How do people react if they don’t present as the secondary gender they thought they would be/wanted to be?
  • How are mating cycles viewed?
  • Opportunity to breed and have pups? Disgraceful and disgusting? Excuse for sex?

Health and Biology

  • How is health different (mental and physical)?
  • What medication is available? 
  • Suppressants? Is there a side effect of taking suppressants or other medication? 
  • Are there drugs that can send people into heat (often used at date r*pe drugs)?
  • How do scent glands work?
  • Anatomy in general?
  • Anatomy of male omegas and female alphas?
  • What are the ratios of the dynamics? Which is the most common?
  • A lot of omegaverses set Betas as the most common dynamic. Others put all of them as equal, or omegas as extremely rare, ect.
  • How do disabilities and mental health play into the dynamics and your omegaverse?
  • For example, here are my posts about gender dysphoria and ADHD in omegaverse.
  • How is trangender defined in your omegaverse? Is it even a part of your omegaverse? How is it viewed? Is it socially acceptable? What medications are available?
  • What about asexuality and aromanticism?
  • Are all heats and ruts sexual?
  • Here are some different types of heats and ruts.
  • How are mating cycles handled?
  • Who can help with mating cycles? What are people given/what do they do to help with mating cycles? For example, nests, pack’s clothes, etc.
  • Can betas experience mating cycles? If so, what are the conditions?
  • When do people present? Do they know their secondary gender from birth or find out later?
  • Who can get pregnant? Are babies delivered differently based on who is birthing them?
  • This would be dependent on anatomy.
  • Do Alphas have an Alpha Voice they can use to control others and make them submit? Who does the voice work on?

Packs

  • What defines a pack?
  • Are packs strictly blood-related? Are some packs blood-related and others not?
  • How are packs formed?
  • Can anyone become a pack leader?
  • How large are packs?
  • How are pack leaders chosen?
  • What does pack hierarchy look like?
  • What are roles in a pack?
  • Who are the most important members of the pack? The most protected? The most valued?
  • Can people be packless? Are there any side effects if they are?

Secondary Gender/Dynamics

  • What are the defining factors of each dynamic? Instincts? Scents? Other?
  • How do the dynamics differ?
  • What are the stereotypes of the dynamics in your omegaverse? Which are true, which are not?
  • Some Alpha and Omega stereotypes
  • What determines secondary gender? Genetics? Fate? Necessity based on pack?
  • Why and when do omegas nest? Do they only nest when they need comfort or are going into heat? Do they always have a nest?
  • Can alphas and betas nest or do something similar?
  • Do you include sub-genders/rare dynamics?
  • Here’s a post by @aboheadcannonsandmore which explains some rare dynamics.
  • Do omegas have rights?
  • Are omegas treated like their own people or viewed as property? Can omegas own things such as land? Do omegas need a legal guardian?
  • What role do betas fill?
  • Is there a double standard for Male Omegas and Female Alphas?
  • For example, female alphas are supposed to be strong and proper alphas but are also criticized if they are not feminine enough.
  • How does each dynamic soothe themselves and others? How do they react to dangerous situations?

There are a lot of things I didn’t address here, but worldbuilding is supposed to be fun and creative! Make it your own and don’t be afraid to be adventurous!

So I'm new to writing in the omegaverse. Currently working on an omegaverse AU fic. I was wondering if there's a good source for the different sounds/vocalizations used in general and specifically for each second gender.

Also what are your opinions on Mates and True Mates?

For example, in my fic, the reader/main character, is an omega who is the only person in the world with a medical condition that once she presented; doesn't give off any scents or pheromones to identify her as such even though doctors say her scent glands are healthy, and doesn't adhere to typical omega behaviors or natural instincts (stereotype or not - such as being submissive, nesting, wanting to be scented, etc). Her "Inner Omega" also is always subdued or can be completely ignored. She was only recognized as being an omega once she went into her first heat, which since then takes heat suppressants cause without her scent, no one wants to be with her. Although she can smell others' scents/pheromones just fine.

Then she bumps into a pack of (male) alphas (7 in total) who can pick up her scent and pheromones - which are very potent to them, and once they realize what's going on, they realize they're True Mates and want her.

After a bit of a Cinderella act where she runs from them (due to panic at this life-altering encounter) and tries to hide but eventually fails (although not trying to make it sound abusive or rapey on the alphas part for looking for her); she has to learn to deal with not only them being able to smell her scent and scenting each other, but also the True Mate status slowly triggering her more typical omega behavior to come out and learning how to be an omega really for the first time.

I definitely think True Mates are possible! If you are writing True Mates like the soulmates of omegaverse, then you could explain the phenomenon that occurs in your fic by saying that True Mates recognize each other by scent. Despite the omega’s condition, a True Mates can always detect their Mate’s scent, so it makes sense that the pack can smell her. 

A lot of omegaverse society is tied up in scents and pheromones that scents produce, so actually having someone that can smell the omega could change their behavior because they are experiencing this crucial part of society and communication for the first time. If no one has ever reacted to the omega’s pheromones, whether they be happy, sad, or other, and suddenly some people do, the omega in question is going to be affected by it.

All in all, a lovely idea for a fic!

Hello Anon!

No those things are not a deal-breaker forme, in fact, I think it is interesting to read stories with some of those things included in them. However, in my personal worldbuilding for omegaverse, I do not want to normalize the things I mentioned. 

I still believe things like Omegas being treated as second class citizens happen, even in my jar of omegaverse, but I do not support it as a normal part of society.

Two asks in one!

  • It’s so soft but they also definitely have their fun.
  • They all moved away from their packs to go to college, which is where they met.
  • The omegas were in a relationship before they added their alpha to the mix.
  • They are all excited because the alpha had never been in a relationship with an omega before, let alone TWO.
  • So all experiences are new and different.
  • Poor boy was not ready for all the protective instincts.
  • Anyone would look at them and he would growl and wrap himself around them like a koala.
  • He gets even the slightest hint they are uncomfortable, and he puts himself between them and whatever the problem is.
  • He is always flustered later and apologizes, but the omegas secretly love it and purposely do shit to evoke his instincts.
  • The female omega was once mindlessly ranting about how she sat next to this asshole in her biology class who kept trying to force his scent on her.
  • And no no no this will not due.
  • The next day he went to class with her and glared at the other alpha for the entire 2 hours while holding her hand and projecting “touch her and you die” and “she’s my precious bean leave her alone” with his scent.
  • Imagine being that knothead, oh my lord I’m deceased.
  • Let’s just say he didn’t bother her for the rest of the semester.
  • Or even look at her.
  • The omegas’ heats usually sync up, thankfully, and the alpha gets so happy.
  • A chance to prove myself? To show my undying love and support for my partners? Sign me the fuck up.
  • The alpha loves cuddles and his pack is more traditional so usually, alphas stood guard outside the nest.

  • The male omega gets affected the worst during these times because he came from a pack where emitting strong scents was prohibited and portrayed as weak.

  • There is a lot of nestling, scenting, and whispered reassurances during finals week.

  • They definitely fight over the TV for who gets to watch what.
  • One day they all walk into the TV room wearing different face paint and jerseys for their respective team in their respective sport because all of their games are happening at the same time.

  • Whoever gets it then has to deal with the others attempting to steal the remote.
  • They all play dirty.
  • I’m thinking seduction, releasing distressed scents, teaming up, and cuddling and other things together to make the one who has the remote jealous or force their instincts to take care of them.
  • The female omega’s pack is on the smaller side, but they are so loving and accepting of the boys.
  • Most times they are on break, they visit her pack.
  • The pack already accepts them as mates.
  • Greetings at the airports: “My sons! Come give momma a hug! You boys look too thin, I brought cookies!”

Ohhhhhh I love this question.

There is a very important thing to remember about the dynamics, specifically the role of alphas and omegas.

Alphas are defensive, omegas are offensive.

Let me explain.

Alphas are the ones who protect the territory. They don’t actively seek out enemies, they only defend from intruders. Omegas contrastingly attack first and ask questions later. If a stranger gets past the defense of the alphas, the omegas have to be ready to attack to protect the pups, elderly and sick members, and other omegas. Betas, depending how they were raised and what role they fill in the pack will do either.

Alphas are almost always the leaders of reactive rebellions and revolutions in omegaverse while omegas are proactive. The French Revolution? Alphas. The Alphas didn’t truly start fighting back against the monarchy until there was an extremely large mass of packs dying and suffering. The Omegas Right Movement, on the other hand, was started by omegas wanting change. They didn’t wait for something to hit them first, they started their rebellion to increase their rights and take charge of their own lives.

Betas are the most diplomatic when approaching rebellions. Alphas and Omegas often dive headfirst into their rebellions without major attempts for peace and compromise. Once they have made up their minds on the issue, they are committed and it’s hard to deter them from working towards the outcome they want.

Betas do not like starting rebellions and revolutions without conferring with the opposition and doing everything they can for peace first. Betas were the main leaders in the American Revolution. They were the ones who reached out to King George III of Britain with the Olive Branch Petition as one last attempt to avoid going to war.

In summary, the reasons why the dynamics start revolutions and the way they lead them are very different.

Based on @myheartismadeofstars’s comment on one of my previous posts, “irl, animals who go into heat absorb unused eggs and the uterine lining! This would likely be a post-heat event since heat is the time of maximum fertility,” I do not think omegas would have periods.

However, don’t let my worldbuilding dictate yours! We can have different ideas and headcanons😁

The omegas can definitely be in a relationship as well! I think it’s possible for people to have two true mates. I support and love polyamorous relationships in all ways, shapes, and forms! More love to give and receive😁

It can also be interesting to write how the relationship came to be and how the people in the relationship act differently/the same towards all the people in the relationship.

I completely agree, Anon! 

Neck Coverings are very popular for omegas. Neck Coverings are not only gifts from partners but empower Omegas in the Omega’s Rights Movement. Neck Coverings, especially collars, originally indicated Omegas as property, but now Omegas wear them proudly, much like the LGBTQIA+ community turning derogatory terms against their original use and meaning. Neck Coverings are not meant to limit and control Omegas but to protect them and keep them safe from unwanted attention. Some Neck Coverings are even worn just for fashion.

Omegas do not need to be in a relationship to wear neck coverings. In fact, many Omegas get their first collar with their biological mother and/or pack mother. It is a tradition in many packs and indicates a prideful omegan presentation. Younger Omegas might just wear chokers or necklaces to cover their still developing scent glands.

Collars are sources of excitement for couples because they are the promise rings of Omegaverse. New collars often indicate a future engagement, so they are a topic of gossip. Much like rings, omegas who want to take their relationships a step farther might hint at or show their partner collars they like.

However, collars are not required. Many omegas prefer them as an embodiment of their strength and beauty as well as a layer of protection, but some Omegas find neck coverings uncomfortable against their scent glands, see them as a way to justify past prejudices against omegas, or just prefer to go without them.

Yes, I love all the Beta love! I love the idea of Betas once again being peacekeepers, not just internally for the pack but externally as well. I am totally on board with new tech being created specifically to accommodate for secondary gender things!

Packs with a lot of Betas tend to belong to nomadic societies such as the Romani people because of their ability to not be homebound and want to explore. As long as they are with their pack, they are happy.
