My Journey Behind the Lens | Joyana Samsel
If I were to encapsulate this piece in one word, it would be "Stillness". My journey to this temple started in early 2022. With a map sprawled out and a plan in mind, I felt a pull towards Rexburg. With some airline points saved up and an intrinsic need to serve the LDS community, I knew this was a trip I had to take.
At first glance, this image might strike you with its simplicity. The perspective, woven through the lens and photography, lends it an unparalleled charm. For me, it’s more than just a picture - it symbolizes the serenity and stillness one feels, gently nudging us to look beyond the obvious.
The soft hues of white, tans, browns, and sage greens were no accident. They were chosen with purpose, to harmonize with the temple. I have a soft spot for a neutral palette, ensuring each shade is a true testament to the temple and its surroundings.
Every masterpiece has its story, in this case it was one I'll never forget. One early morning, with the Rexburg sunrise on the horizon, I found myself accidentally squatting onto a baby cactus! It was a comical reminder that nature always has its way of surprising us. And yes, in my zest to get the perfect shot, I may have overlooked a 'no parking' sign. Breaking rules at a temple? Well, I guess art does demand a bit of rebellion at times!
This project wasn't just another assignment for me. It coincided with my time at BYUI, where I was wrapping up my Business degree. It was an enriching experience to finally see the campus, a place that had been a part of my journey as a student, mother, wife, and business owner.
My hope for you, as you gaze upon this piece, is to feel that gentle embrace of stillness, reminiscent of heaven's hug. While the temple remains the focal point, I’ve infused it with a modern and white-textured aesthetic, making it distinct yet connected to its roots.
This piece isn’t bound by size. Whether it's a 5x7 gracing a side table or a grand 42x56 taking center stage on an entry wall, it's designed to fit seamlessly into your space.
Through the lens, I aim not just to capture moments but to tell stories. The Rexburg Temple, with its serene aura and my own tales intertwined, is a testament to this journey.
