Filius fuit Edmundi McIlhenny, conditoris illius societatis, et Mariae Avery. Discipulus universitatis Lehigh, sine lauris anno 1894 decedit ut in expeditione Arctica Friderici Cook, participaret. Expeditionem suam in Alascam anno 1897 duxit; unde reditus viridaria ad aves migratorias et animalia aquatica protegenda in insula nativa elaborare incepit. Ibidem anno 1938 myocastores coluit, sed anno 1945 omnes liberavit.
