Kizo Ishikawa's Graduation Thesis

In 1890, a written thesis was required to graduate from Iowa Law. Kizo chose question 10: “To what extent do the federal courts follow state decisions in cases arising in the respective states?”  Click on the images below to read a portion of his handwritten thesis. Images will open in a new tab.

Special Thank You

The Law Library’s Cataloguing & Serials Librarian, Yuka Ohba-Kreiter, is from Sendai, where Kizo grew up.

Special thanks to Yuka and her friend in Sendai, Yuko Odashima, for their extensive research into Kizo’s life, both before and after Iowa Law.

This newspaper from Sendai,  dated Dec. 9, 1890, says Ishikawa Kizo  (JD) has returned home and is ill. In less than 2 years, Kizo would succumb to tuberculosis.
