Founding Year of Gamers2 (2014)[edit]
Following the departure from SK Gaming Carlos "ocelote" Rodríguez Santiagos formed a new roster consisting of Jesper "Jwaow" Strandgren, Sebastián "Morden" Esteban Fernández, Florent "Yuuki60" Soler, Hugo "Dioud" Padioleau and himself that debuted at the SCAN EUW Winter Invitational at the start of 2014. This same roster was invited to IEM São Paulo, where they would compete under ocelote's own brand, oceloteWorld. However, on February 24th, 2014 ocelote officially revealed the organization he founded as Gamers2 alongside co-owner Jens Hilgers. [106][107][108] The organization started their journey in the European Challenger Series. Early on Gamers2 was already commited, even setting up its first headquarters in Spain revealed as the Gamers2 Mansion. [109] However despite various third place finishes across the Challenger Series, they were unable to make it into the promotion tournament. That year they did gain another chance to make it into the EU LCS through an additional Expansion tournament. However after a loss against n!faculty in the online stage they were eliminated, and would need to continue in the challenger series.
Building Up to the EU LCS (2015)[edit]
At the start of 2015, ocelote officially announced his retirement as a player. Meaning he would step back and instead focus on his position as the CEO of Gamers2. [110][111] While Gamers2 had dabbled in various tournaments with different players in the months, Gamers2 announced that they had acquired Team Nevo]'s roster the day after ocelote's retirement as their team for the Challenger Series. [112] The roster consited of Lennart "SmittyJ" Warkus, Erberk "Gilius" Demir, Jérémy "Eika" Valdenaire, Mohammad "Jebus" Tokhi, and Aleksi "Hiiva" Kaikkonen. While they placed in third during the regular season, they lost to LowLandLions.White 0-2 in their opening match in the playoffs, and would find another loss against Reason Gaming meaning they lost out on attending the promotion tournament. Over the course of the Summer Split, Gamers2 made various roster changes, ultimately ending their split in third, now heading into the Promotion tournament with their final additions in Mateusz "Kikis" Szkudlarek, Luka "Perkz" Perković, Jesse "Jesse" Le, and Glenn "Hybrid" Doornenbal. They now had to face SK Gaming as their final opponent to make it into the EU LCS. It was also for this match that the team had requested ocelote to join in as their coach. [113]Following a best-of-five series that would go the full lenght, Gamers2 came out on top. Meaning that CEO ocelote had now eliminated the organization he previously played for to make it into the main European League.
Gamers2 Becomes G2 Esports with Success (2016-2017)[edit]
Heading into the 2016 season, Gamers2 started off with a rebrand as they renamed themselves to G2 Esports alongside revamping their logo. [113] They would also revamp their roster, moving Kikis to the Top lane, and signing two Korean players in Kim "Trick" Gang-yun and Kim "Emperor" Jin-hyun to fill the Jungle and AD Carry position respectively. Finalizing their roster as Joey "YoungBuck" Steltenpool was appointed as the teams Head Coach. [114]
