Walking down the front path to Darryl’s home, one can understand what it means to have a home in the both beautiful and rugged frontier landscape in the Big Island of Hawaii. It is in this place where his passions live and are shared with his best friend and just recently married wife, Emily. The land itself sits on the edge of the rainforest, and has been nurtured into the beginnings of a small sustainable farm. Only an adventurer like Darryl could have survived the conditions of living in a tent for nearly a year while working as an IT professional to build such a life. |

Born in 1970 (of Mexican, Eastern-European, and Jewish upbringing), Darryl grew up in the 70s and 80s, and true to this heritage still leads the life of a free spirit. As a California native, Darryl’s first home was in the San Fernando Valley, a suburb of greater Los Angeles. From there he moved to San Diego where he went to school and graduated with a BS in Information Technology from San Diego State University. Within these new surroundings, he discovered two interests that would change the trajectory of his life forever…..surfing and music. |

For the avid surfer, it is easy to understand the attraction of the ocean, but only a few can make the connection that a surfer can. Being drawn to the water is like "going to church", only those of faith can truly understand its hold. His other passion is music. In this case a similar bond was created as Darryl demonstrated his innate talent as a local deejay. In this realm, his immersion in the culture of the underground rave scene provided a sense of community and the pure joy of connecting with people across all backgrounds. |
As one could imagine, the line from San Diego to Hawaii may have been drawn by fate. However, as fate (and Darryl for that matter) would have it, the desire to move and change a place to meet your needs is not really how it works. Actually it’s the other way around. It’s the place that changes you on some profound personal level. And as a long-time island resident, Darryl will tell you it can be a hand-blistering and back-breaking life at times, but one that is rewarding beyond measure. |
