Welcome from the Fellowship Program Director

Dr. Rita BakhruWelcome to the Critical Care Medicine Fellowship Program at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) in Charleston, SC. As the Program Director, I am thrilled by your interest in our program. This website aims to showcase the exceptional environment, fellows, and faculty that create a remarkable training experience at MUSC.

While I only joined MUSC in 2023, I appreciate our division and the rich training and mentoring opportunities we provide. I grew up in Connecticut and then attended medical school and completed my Internal Medicine residency at the University of Michigan. Following that, I completed my fellowship in Pulmonary/Critical Care Medicine as well as a Master of Science in Clinical Epidemiology at the University of Pennsylvania. I joined the faculty at Wake Forest and remained there for 9 years until I was recruited to join the faculty here at MUSC. During my time at Wake Forest, I developed an ICU Recovery Clinic and worked to improve the recovery of patients post-critical illness; I am excited to bring my expertise in ICU Recovery to MUSC. I have been fortunate in my career to have excellent mentors and colleagues; I strive to extend that same fortune to our trainees here at MUSC.

The critical care fellowship has a dedicated group of core faculty in addition to partners in critical care education including members of pulmonary/critical care medicine, cardiology, anesthesia, neurocritical care, surgical critical care, and emergency medicine. Sara Croft is our excellent program coordinator. On this website and throughout our interview days, we hope that you will see our collegial atmosphere, excellent training program, and extensive academic and research resources and opportunities, all in beautiful Charleston, South Carolina.

Should you have additional questions regarding our fellowship program, please contact me at [email protected] or Sara Croft, program coordinator, at [email protected].

Sincerely,

Rita Bakhru, M.D., MS
