Goal

[edit]

This project seeks to address and counter Wikipedias well-documented gender bias in practice and theory. It will do so by arranging feminist edit-a-thon on March 8 2015 and March 9 2015 with a connected academic symposium on the morning of March 9. The edit-a-thon will be dedicated to train new editors to write 30 new articles and expand selected stubs in Danish and English on notable female figures, primarily female artists and scientists, plus a few female topics. This is the Wiki-page we have made for the event https://da.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:We_can_edit-a-thon_København_2015#Form.C3.A5l

Fit with strategy

[edit]

What crucial thing will the project try to change or benefit in the Wikimedia movement? Please select the Wikimedia strategic priority(ies) that your project most directly aims to impact and explain how your project fits. Most projects fit all strategic priorites. However, we would like project managers to focus their efforts on impacting 1-2 strategic priorities. Examples of strategic priorities can be found at here.

  • Diversify editors
  • Counter bias (gender, race, religion, nationality)
  • Educate users of Wikipedia on the inner workings of Wikipedia

Measures of success

[edit]
  • At least 50 women (both gender are invited) total attend and/or facilitate the March 8th + 9th Copenhagen event.
  • At least 70 people sign in for attending the March 8th edit-a-thon event (we currently [February 21] have 104 people signed up through FB)
  • At least 200 users sign in on the project wiki-page
  • At least 50 articles on women are created and/or improved
  • Less than 5 articles are speedy deleted, or nominated for deletion.
  • One academic article on Wikipedia is submitted and published in a top-ranking international journal
  • A guest edited issue of NTIK is published on the basis of the symposium
  • Event is covered extensively by Danish national press

Academic impact

[edit]
  • Confirmed: a guest-edited special issue of the peer-reviewed The Nordic Journal for Information and Culture on the basis of the symposium
  • One peer reviewed journal article in an international high-ranking journal on Wikipedia as a form of digital archive, dealing with the notion of curation
  • Establish a much-needed academic debate about Wikipedia and the importance of (female and minority) scholars considering Wikipedia as a knowledge production output on par with teaching, journal article production and other forms of knowledge dissemination. This event will inaugurate four smaller volunteer workshops for potential (female and minority) editors at the University of Copenhagen
  • Enrol in the Wikipedia Educational Program for the next course we have to teach in the vestige of the academic project, YDUN, that is co-organizer of the symposium

Risks

[edit]
  • We are not experts at tracking editor activity and retention. We will work with the WMF Learning and Evaluation team to learn evaluation tools and practice using them.
  • Too many participants and not enough facilitators.
  • We are ourselves new to the Wikipedia editor environment, and therefore expect a steep learning curve in unison with our editors

Budget

[edit]

Please provide a detailed breakdown of project expenses according to the instructions here. See Budget Guidelines. Grantees are subject to line-item scrutiny of expenses. Changes to the approved budget beyond 10% in any category must be approved in advance.

Endorsements

[edit]

Do you think this project should be selected for a Project and Event Grant? Please add your name and rationale for endorsing this project in the list below. Other feedback, questions or concerns from community members are also highly valued, but please post them on the talk page of this proposal.

  • Support Support Nene La Beet, User:labeet: So few women are among editors in Denmark and so few of the notable women from Danish art history are represented at all or represented properly in Wikipedia. Any effort to improve this should be welcomed and encouraged. This project is a welcome addition to an ongoing effort to encourage more knowledgeable women to participate actively.
  • Support Support Astrid Maria Bigoni, User:Astroide: Danish Wikipedia is in urgent need of female editors. The gender imbalance has a direct influence on the topics covered in Danish Wikipedia. I hope this project will help to recruit more female editors.
  • Support Support Henrik Sørensen, User:HenrikKbh: I find it extremely important that as many different people as possible are contributing their knowledge to Wikipedia, so any project that will broaden the pool of editors have my full support.
  • Support Support Theredproject (talk) 19:42, 3 February 2015 (UTC): It is great to see what started out as an Art+Feminism satellite event go above and beyond just holding an editathon, to turning it into a larger cultural forum and conference. These are the kinds of steps that mark the growth, diffusion, and required for the decentralization of the A+F project.--Theredproject (talk) 19:42, 3 February 2015 (UTC)
  • Support Support Kim Bach, User:Kim Bach: This is a very inspiring and much needed outreach project with clear and very ambitious goals and a focus on topics where Danish Wikipedia is in huge need of improvement. 3. February 2015 15:08 (UTC)
  • Support Support Karen Mardahl, User: Twdk: This is an impressive and well-planned project. And it is necessary. This is not "nice to have". This is a "must-have" project. 22:14, 4 February 2015 (UTC)
  • Support Support User:Palnatoke This project is well in line with other efforts to get more editors from all walks of life in the Danish society.
