Letter petitioning WMF to reverse recent decitions

[edit]

The Wikimedia Foundation recently created a new feature, "superprotect" status. The purpose is to prevent pages from being edited by elected administrators -- but permitting WMF staff to edit them. It has been put to use in only one case: to protect the deployment of the Media Viewer software on German Wikipedia, in defiance of a clear decision of that community to disable the feature by default, unless users decide to enable it.

If you oppose these actions, please add your name to this letter. If you know non-Wikimedians who support our vision for the free sharing of knowledge, and would like to add their names to the list, please ask them to sign an identical version of the letter on change.org.

I'm notifying you because you participated in one of several relevant discussions. -Pete F (talk) 22:05, 20 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

Do you want to help draft the WMF board resolution on superprotect? (Context is that expected policy improvements didn't yet reach anything, 6 months after the stated deadline; and further worsening is on sight.) You didn't sign the letter, so you can offer a different perspective. --Nemo 07:32, 18 February 2015 (UTC)Reply

This is a message from the Wikimedia Foundation. Translations are available.

As you may know, the Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees approved a new "Access to nonpublic information policy" on 25 April 2014 after a community consultation. The former policy has remained in place until the new policy could be implemented. That implementation work is now being done, and we are beginning the transition to the new policy.

An important part of that transition is helping volunteers like you sign the required confidentiality agreement. All Wikimedia volunteers with access to nonpublic information are required to sign this new agreement, and we have prepared some documentation to help you do so.

The Wikimedia Foundation is requiring that OTRS volunteers sign the new confidentiality agreement by 31 December 2015 to retain their access. You are receiving this email because you have been identified as an OTRS volunteer and are required to sign the confidentiality agreement under the new policy. If you do not sign the new confidentiality agreement by 31 December 2015, you will lose your OTRS access. OTRS volunteers have a specific agreement available, if you have recently signed the general confidentiality agreement for another role (such as CheckUser or Oversight), you do not need to sign the general agreement again, but you will still need to sign the OTRS agreement.

Signing the confidentiality agreement for nonpublic information is conducted and tracked using Legalpad on Phabricator. We have prepared a guide on Meta-Wiki to help you create your Phabricator account and sign the new agreement: Confidentiality agreement for nonpublic information/How to sign

If you have any questions or experience any problems while signing the new agreement, please visit this talk page or email me (gvarnum(_AT_)wikimedia.org). Again, please sign this confidentiality agreement by 31 December 2015 to retain your OTRS access. If you do not wish to retain this access, please let me know and we will forward your request to the appropriate individuals.

Thank you,
Gregory Varnum (User:GVarnum-WMF), Wikimedia Foundation

What future IdeaLab campaigns would you like to see?

[edit]

Hi there,

I’m Jethro, and I’m seeking your help in deciding topics for new IdeaLab campaigns that could be run starting next year. Here’s how to participate:

Take care,

I'm happy to announce the results of your participation, and encourage you to review them and our next steps for implementing those campaigns this year. Thank you to everyone who volunteered time to participate and submit ideas.

With great thanks,

Open Call for Individual Engagement Grants

[edit]

Greetings! The Individual Engagement Grants (IEG) program is accepting proposals until April 12th to fund new tools, research, outreach efforts, and other experiments that enhance the work of Wikimedia volunteers. Whether you need a small or large amount of funds (up to $30,000 USD), IEGs can support you and your team’s project development time in addition to project expenses such as materials, travel, and rental space.

The regulation on Vietnamese Wikipedia opposed Checkuser policy of Wikimedia Foundation

[edit]

Hi Emufarmers

Hope you remember this case.

Finally, as our prediction, Trần Nguyễn Minh Huy (talk · contribs) deputed ThiênĐế98 (talk · contribs) to CheckUser position. If ThiênĐế98 is appointed CheckUser, Vietnamese Wikipedia really is in danger. Vietnam Government can collect IP of all Vietnamese Wikipedians thus they know our identities and personal information. Some members can get troubles even be arrested. This will be a disaster of Vietnamese Wikipedia also the global Wikipedia movement. This is an urgent situation. Please seriously pay attention to this problem.

I cannot imagine that a person who has purposively violated the CheckUser policy of Wikimedia Foundation can be deputed to CheckUser position at Vietnamese Wikipedia but it is really happening. Michel9090 (talk) 11:00, 13 April 2020 (UTC)Reply

Just a sock-puppet account who already got banned in Vietnamese Wikipedia yell in here for make misapprehension in Meta, I hope Emufarmers understand the situation, if anything wrong happen with Vietnamese Wikipedia, our local ambassador and our local user group would leave a properly notice. Thank you very much. --minhhuy (talk) 11:04, 13 April 2020 (UTC)Reply

Don't allege me sockpuppet as others who have been blocked by you Minh Huy. Emufarmers can check by himself. Michel9090 (talk) 11:11, 13 April 2020 (UTC)Reply

Michel9090, as I indicated to you in previous correspondence, if you believe a particular user is a serious danger to the community, you should contact the Trust & Safety team (ca@wikimedia.org). While the policy which was previously in effect on the Vietnamese Wikipedia did not comply with the global CheckUser policy, it appears that the new one does comply. I see no indication that Trần Nguyễn Minh Huy himself has violated the CheckUser policy (and I don't see how he could have, since he is not yet a CheckUser). Emufarmers (talk) 11:14, 13 April 2020 (UTC)Reply
Actually, he is accusing me for nominating our local sysop ThiênĐế98 as a CheckUser role, whose he think could be harmful for Vietnamese Wikipedia. He is accusing that ThiênĐế98 working for Vietnam Goverment, but there aren't any proof, and in the case we are in danger like him said, our community would have final decision (via the RfP result). --minhhuy (talk) 11:23, 13 April 2020 (UTC)Reply
Sorry, I meant "I see no indication that ThiênĐế98 himself has violated the CheckUser policy..." Emufarmers (talk) 11:27, 13 April 2020 (UTC)Reply

I didn't accuse anyone Minh Huy. I just said what i think. Thank you Emufarmers. I will report Trust & Safety team (ca@wikimedia.org) about this case. Thank you. Michel9090 (talk) 12:03, 13 April 2020 (UTC)Reply

Hi. As you would know the sockmaster who likes "R&B" called en:User:MariaJaydHicky. See en:Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/MariaJaydHicky/Archive and en:Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/MariaJaydHicky/Archive/1.

en:Special:Contributions/Whatyagondo is probably a MariaJaydHicky sock. It was currently inactive since August last year but not blocked. Also, she's currently editing under en:Special:Contributions/2a02:c7f:70cd:0:0:0:0:0/39.

Hi, please, I would like to help set up an email address for my local wiki Twi. It does not yet have a queue in VRTS. Thank you Robertjamal12 ~🔔 13:10, 28 January 2022 (UTC)Reply

Hi @Robertjamal12:, generally we add new queues when there's a demonstrated demand for them. Unless there are people writing to us in Twi, or there is reason to expect there would be, it probably makes more sense to rely on existing ways to get in touch. Emufarmers (talk) 17:18, 28 January 2022 (UTC)Reply

Just thought I'd mention my thanks for your support in trying to get our elections and electcom to be more, well, Wikimedian Nosebagbear (talk) 16:12, 29 July 2022 (UTC)Reply

Thank you, @Nosebagbear. Because engagement on these sorts of things is usually pretty low (especially at this stage), it's always hard to know whether I'm speaking for the silent majority or tilting at windmills. Of course, since you are a fellow knight-errant, your encouragement only confirms that if I am deluded, we are both deluded collectively. But it is good not to tilt alone. Indeed! When wikimedia itself seems lunatic, who knows where madness lies? Nosebagbear (talk) 16:50, 29 July 2022 (UTC)Reply

A group of SWANs heading to the meeting

Hello everyone!

The Strategic Wikimedia Affiliates Network (SWAN) is a developing forum for all Wikimedia movement affiliates to share ideas about current developments in the Wikimedia Movement. It expands on the model of the All-Affiliates Brand Meeting to help lay some of the groundwork for further Wikimedia 2030 strategy process work.

At this meeting we will focus on the recent statement by the WMF Board of Trustees liaisons statement on the Movement Charter in which the liaisons stated that they will be recommending the Board of Trustees not to ratify the final draft of the Movement Charter. The community and affiliate votes on the ratification are supposed to start on Tuesday, 25 June. This meeting offers a venue to discuss the situation and formulate the "next steps".

File verification

[edit]

Dear Emufarmers, I'm writing to address a recent issue involving a photo that was mistakenly removed from Wikimedia Commons out of concern for its license: File:Virginio Simonelli shot by Marco Melfi.jpg. It is a photo of Italian singer-songwriter Virginio Simonelli shot by the Italian photographer Marco Melfi, and also uploaded on Wikimedia by Marco himself.

I've been updating Virginio's Wikipedia for many years, as a fan. One day, I complimented Marco Melfi on a photoshoot he did of Virginio and I mentioned that his Wikipedia page has a very old picture, the one that appears now on the page. Marco saw that very low quality photo, and disliked it so much that he offered to upload one of his photos as replacement. He considered it a homage, and he did so immediately. Indeed, he used his personal mail to create the account "Marco Duck", and you can easily check that if you contact him on that mail. After that, I happily used his beautiful photo on Virginio's Wiki page. Despite Marco flagging the file as 'his own work', it still got tagged as missing permission by Gbawden, back on September 25th. I hadn't noticed that, but Marco immediately contacted me for help, because when user Gbawden did that, Marco received an automatic mail from Wikimedia that asked him to confirm his identity by sending a mail to the OTRS/VRT-volunteers. I told him he should send an email in which he stated that it's him and then wait for your reply. Now it's almost a week later and yet the file still doesn't appear to be verified. I am wondering, did you guys receive the correct e-mail from Marco? Or Marco didn't give you enough information to confirm his identity? Should I tell him to send another mail, and in that case, what does he have to write for it to be okay? Or the email Marco sent was okay and we just have to wait? Please let me know! Marco only speaks job-related intermediate English and does not understand the full Wikipedia system, so I'm trying to help him figure it all out. It's a shame to lose such a beautiful photo for a mistake.

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation! Ravenlions (talk) 15:16, 1 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
