Wikimania 2022/Pittsburgh Meetup
|
Wikimania 2022 is the seventeenth international Wikimedia conference, bringing Wikimedians together to create, celebrate and connect, virtually and with in-person components.
We are hosting a Wikimania 2022 local meetup in Pittsburgh on August 12-14 for Wikimedians who are fully vaccinated for Covid-19 (including one booster) to gather in-person to meet each other and participate in both online and offline activities.
Why Pittsburgh?
[edit]Pittsburgh provides a central and affordable location to convene Wikimedians from Ohio, Pennsylvania, and other upper midwest locations. Plus, it's the Paris of Appalachia! With the support of Ohio Wikimedians User Group and Wikimedia DC, we're hoping to build community among Wikimedians in the mid-Atlantic and upper Midwest regions. Pittsburgh has a community of GLAM (galleries, libraries, archives, museums) professionals and tech folks who work in open knowledge and open data, but many of them may not yet be connected with others in the region who could collaborate on Wikimedia projects, technical contributions, and more. Wikimania 2022 provides an opportune time to connect these people in real life around the virtual conference.
Schedule
[edit]Wikimania global schedule is at: https://wikimania.wikimedia.org/wiki/Program/Schedule.
The schedule of local events for this meetup in Pittsburgh is actively being created and depends on the interests and enthusiasms of YOU, the attendees. If you have a project you want to present, or a topic you want to talk about, please be bold and just claim a slot during the hours listed below for which we have indicated that we have a venue reserved.
Thursday August 11, 2022
[edit]Day 1 virtual programming has single schedule block that covers after-work hours across Asia-Oceania, and also overlaps with other zones (but barely with ours). We will not be meeting for the online Wikimania activities, but we will be having an in-person social.
Are there talks from the virtual conference that you want to watch together? Say so on the Discussion page!

Logistics
[edit]Locations
[edit]Our activities will be based in the East Liberty neighborhood of Pittsburgh. The Carnegie Library (130 S. Whitfield Street, Pittsburgh PA 15206) will be our base for Friday and Saturday. Code & Supply (5648 Friendship Ave, Pittsburgh PA 15206) will be our home for Sunday.
Reimbursements
[edit]Our event grant provides a total of $1,500 USD in travel cost reimbursements to be split between participants who constructively participate in the conference, and whose primary purpose for travel is to attend the event. While we are unlikely to cover everyone's costs completely, we hope to be able to make participants' travel a bit more affordable.
After the event, a form will be sent to participants to request reimbursement (save your travel receipts!).
Lodging
[edit]Some hotel options in East Liberty:
- SpringHill Suites Pittsburgh Bakery Square ($320-350 USD)
- Hotel Indigo ($230-250 USD)
- Kasa: The Maverick Pittsburgh ($170-190 USD)
- Wyndham Pittsburgh University Center ($127-150 USD)
Visit the Discussion page to coordinate with others and discuss other options for group-coordinated lodging.
Technology
[edit]Please bring a laptop with you if you can. The conference room has a projector and HDMI cord for presenting.
Transportation
[edit]Public transit: Pittsburgh Regional Transit (only recently renamed that; still called the "Port Authority" mostly).
Getting to East Liberty:
The East Busway connects major neighborhoods in the city with express bus service that costs the same as the slower, surface-street buses. There is a station in East Liberty that is a few blocks walking distance from the Carnegie Library (our meeting place for 2 days).
- From Amtrak or Greyhound station in downtown Pittsburgh (Penn Station):
- Bus: you can catch a bus on the East Busway to East Liberty (depending on time of day...busway schedules get thin at night). Use Pittsburgh Regional Transit website or download their app, or use your favorite mapping app to figure out other bus routes to take (Google Maps works well).
- Lyft / Uber / driving: takes about 20 minutes.
- Biking: mostly uphill from downtown, takes 30-40 minutes. Download or use an interactive bike map to find the best route.
- From the Pittsburgh International Airport:
- Bus: The only public transportation from the airport is the 28x bus (PDF map and schedule). This bus takes you pretty close to East Liberty; but it does drop you about a mile from the Carnegie Library.
- Lyft / Uber / driving: it's a ~30-40 minute drive to the city and into East Liberty. At rush hour, that drive can take more like an hour.
COVID-19
[edit]Attendees are required to be fully vaccinated (including at least one booster) for COVID-19, barring a valid medical reason. Attendees are encouraged to test before attending, and should not attend if positive for COVID-19.
Masks are not required for attendees, but are recommended. Masks and rapid tests will be provided for attendees who would like them.
Attendees
[edit]- Feel free to add yourself if you plan to attend, or even if you're just potentially interested!
