Ever since I first saw the Rotten Vale i was eager to explore it and see what i could see. I was particularly interested about the Dalamadur skeleton in area 4. What I was really curious about was how big this Dalamadur was and how long ago it may have died. So I did some researching.
The “normal” sized Dalamadur measures 44039.7cm, or 1445ft.
But this individual is so massive it’s an entire area on the map. The tricky part was trying to figure out its measurements.
Luckily my Hunter is a good measuring stick. Thanks to the size chart videos from MH3, we know the hunter is 1.75m tall. Standing next to this tooth, I’ve figured this tooth is around 4.75m tall. The normal Dalamadur’s tooth only measures 1.5m tall. So, 4.5÷1.5=3, so this massive Dalamadur is 3 times larger than the one we see in MH4U. So, 44039.7x3=132,119.1cm, or 4335ft! Wow, he’s a big one!
Hold up, there’s another one! Long story short, this is still bigger than the MH4U one, but smaller than the one up in the Vale. This one, from what I can estimate, is 2456ft long.
Ok, so after I figured out how big the first Dalamadur was, when did it die? The bigger question, how would I be able to figure that out?
The stalactites helped me figure that out. According to Wikipedia, stalactites can grow 0.13-3mm a year depending on minerals in the environment. Using the tooth I measured, I figure the stalactites to be between 12 and 15 meters. Using the largest stalactite gives a better idea of when it died. So 15m equals 1500cm, which equals 15000mm. So I did two calculations using the minimum and maximum rate of growth of stalactites.
So: 15000÷3=5000, and 15000÷0.13=115,384
So the stalactites started growing either 5000 or 115,384 years ago. So the Dalamadur probably died around this time, maybe even longer. I wasn’t able to estimate the age of the other one unfortunately.
