The TV series is based on Volumes 1-19(End) of the manga series of the same name written and illustrated by Yoshihiro Togashi. The anime omits some early chapters from the manga and also adds some anime original content. Compared to the manga, the anime also features different levels of violence and profanity, as well as slightly different art styles.

Season 3 (Book of Circus) of the Black Butler anime picks up from where Season 1 diverged from the manga (Episode 15). The TV series adapts the Circus Arc from Volumes 6-8 of the manga series of the same title by Yana Toboso. It serves as a soft reboot of the anime. The series was a close adaptation of the manga, unlike the previous seasons.
