Erythrina bidwillii (E. herbacea x E. crista Galli)

Coralbean, Cherokee Bean, Red Cardinal

This delightful plant is a charming small deciduous tree or multi-stemmed shrub that can grow up to 18 feet tall, though it’s often seen as a lovely 8-foot shrub. It proudly blooms continuously on new growth from spring all the way through winter, with its peak flowering happening in the summer. The dainty dark red flowers, which are about 2 inches long, gracefully arch above the foliage on long 2-foot racemes that extend from 6-foot stems. To keep its shape looking beautiful, it’s best to trim and prune it back hard in the winter after it finishes flowering. This plant boasts sturdy hardiness thanks to its lineage, a cross between E. herbacea and E. crista-Galli, allowing it to withstand temperatures down to 20°F without damage, and it remains root hardy even in colder conditions. Perfect for USDA Zones 7b to 10b, it's quite rare for a Coral Tree! This stunning garden gem is one of the best and tiniest coral trees available. With a little patience and training, it can transform into a lovely miniature tree, even though it’s typically enjoyed as a shrub.

This wonderful plant originated from a cross between Erythrina herbacea, a native North American species, and Erythrina crista-Galli from South America. William MacArthur first created this hybrid in the early 1840s at Camden Park in Australia. As one of Australia's most passionate and influential horticulturists, he initially named the plant Erythrina Camden. Later, while he was in Sydney, the English botanist John Carne Bidwill sent a sample to botanist William Herbert in England, who suggested naming it Erythrina MacArthur in honor of its original creator.

Spring Shipping:
Orders are shipped within 7-10 business days. We will email you if there are expected delays.

When you order plants from our nursery, you can expect them to arrive in the best possible condition. Our team carefully packs each order using sturdy, biodegradable packaging materials.

Your plants' appearance may vary depending on the season and their current growth stage. We may cut back the leafy growth of some plants to prepare them for shipment and transplanting.

5 Gallon and Up: Any plant purchased to ship over 5 Gallons will be shipped bare root. This means we will remove the plant from its original pot, remove the soil surrounding the roots, and wrap the roots with a biodegradable plastic bag. This reduces weight and the likelihood of damage during shipping.

Once your plants arrive, it is essential to plant them as soon as possible. This will help them rebound and thrive. If you cannot plant immediately, water regularly and keep the roots off heat-conducting surfaces.

Newly transplanted plants often require more water until their roots are well established. Plan to water them 1-3 times weekly for the first few months.
