Struts are a part of the system that processes pay-dirt in the Motherlode Mine. There are two struts, one for each water wheel; if both struts are broken the water flow will stop, and no more pay-dirt will be delivered to the sack until at least one strut is repaired. Players can repair struts by clicking on them with a hammer in their inventory. Wielding a main-hand or off-hand imcando hammer also works. Repairing a broken strut is a task in the easy Falador Diary.
Mechanics[edit | edit source]
Struts work on "rounds" of 58 seconds. After the first two rounds have passed, the struts will roll to see whether or not they break. Struts will either break on round two, three, or four. More simply, the strut will either break 1:56, 2:54, or 3:52 after being repaired.
Repairing a strut gives 1.5 times the player's current Smithing level in Smithing experience. Because of the aforementioned mechanics, a strut will break between 15 and 31 times an hour, giving an absolute maximum of 4,600 experience an hour at 99 and with the wheels breaking after two rounds every time.
By hopping worlds, however, it is possible to reach much higher rates, with up to 60.000 Smithing experience per hour at 99. These experience rates can be achieved by hopping a rotation of between 18 to 22 worlds repeatedly, creating a loop of broken struts to repair. Regular hopping will result in about half to two-thirds of the experience, depending on the number of active players in the Motherlode Mine. Extensive training is limited by reaching the hop limiter within 90 to 120 minutes of continous world hopping.
Level | Xp/hour |
---|---|
30 | 14,000 - 21,000 |
40 | 18,000 - 26,000 |
50 | 22,000 - 31,000 |
60 | 27,000 - 37,000 |
70 | 32,000 - 43,000 |
80 | 37,000 - 49,000 |
90 | 42,000 - 54,000 |
99 | 48,000 - 60,000 |
Using Temporary skill boost items, such as Dwarven Stout, increases the experience gained by repairing struts. By frequently world hopping it is possible to maintain the boost for a long time, effectively improving the experience rates by a few %, varying based on current Smithing level, at a negligible cost.
