Picture Enfield - Then and Now

An old photograph and story from Enfield history and how that site appears today, plus a trivia question about the town.

ENFIELD, CT — Today's installment of this weekly Enfield history series, courtesy of the Enfield Historical Society via archive.org, is taken from the 1968 Enfield High School yearbook - an advertisement for the great Klug's Bakery.

The photo depicts a delivery van for the bakery, as well as three employees (two of whom have been identified - Gary Breithling pointed out his sister Nancy, and Phil Dumond identified his wife Marie). The business originally operated at the corner of Route 5 and Enfield Avenue, which later became the Honey Bun Restaurant and most recently contained Sarapes Mexican restaurant before it moved to the High Street Plaza.

My memories of Klug's come from the 1970s, when the shop was located at 124 South Road. Every time my dad drove past it on the way to my ice hockey practice, I would ask him if we could stop there; on occasion, we did.

Among the memorable employees over the years were baker Elfriede "Elfi" Kiss, Ann Rossignol, Maurice "Moe" Jutras, John Swiatek and Peter Polinski, a 1978 Enfield High School graduate who was killed in a bicycle vs. automobile accident in Aug. 1979, just shy of his 19th birthday.

The South Road building is currently home to Thompsonville Moose Lodge 1525. Here is a more contemporary look at the site, courtesy of Google Maps.

Last week's trivia answer:
Last week's trivia question was, "Who was the original principal at Prudence Crandall Elementary School upon its opening in 1967? " The answer: the late Dennis Balsewicz, who worked in the Enfield school system from 1961 to 1994, including 19 years at Crandall through 1986. He passed away in 2004. By the way, I am a Crandall alum; check out this 3rd grade class picture from 45 years ago; gotta love Mrs. Davis' orange pantsuit. Unbelievably, five members of this class are no longer with us. RIP John O'Toole, John Callahan, Jerry Meloni, Maureen Blackburn and Kathy Siana.

This week's trivia question:
In what year did future U.S. Hockey Hall of Famer Craig Janney graduate from Enfield High School? Post the answer in the comments section below, or on the Enfield Patch Facebook page.
