ELMHURST, IL – The project to build a new Field Elementary School in Elmhurst is "coming along very well," an official reported last week.

At a school board meeting, Todd Schmidt, director of facilities for Elmhurst School District 205, said the contractor is nearly done with the roof.

That's even better than last year's project to build a new Lincoln Elementary School, in which the contractor struggled to get insulation for the roof, Schmidt said.

In the next week or so, Schmidt said, the contractor will have all the windows on the first floor.

All of this progress points toward getting the exterior done before winter, meaning workers can focus on the inside during the cold months.

"If you go out there and look every day, it's really starting to develop into a building," Schmidt said.

The old Field Elementary was demolished earlier in the summer.

A year earlier, crews took down Lincoln and replaced the school in a year. It was open on time for students in August.

Field Elementary, which is at North and Emroy avenues, is more than 90 years old. The new school is set to be larger.
