3-Month-Old's Mother Charged With Murder In Chevy Chase Drowning
A 3-month-old drowned in Chevy Chase, Montgomery County Police said, and the child's mother has been charged with murder.
CHEVY CHASE, MD — A 3-month-old drowned in Chevy Chase Sunday, and the child's mother has been charged with first-degree murder, Montgomery County Police said Monday.
Mackenzie Rose Colgan, 37, was arrested Sunday and charged with murder in the death of her 3-month-old daughter, a police news release said. Shortly after noon Sunday, the Montgomery County Emergency Communications Center received a call from the infant’s father claiming Colgan had drowned their daughter while giving her a bath.
Montgomery County police officers and Fire Rescue Personnel responded to the 7300 block of Summit Avenue. The infant was taken to a local hospital, where additional life-saving measures were attempted, but the child was ultimately pronounced dead.

Detectives identified Colgan as the suspect and she was arrested at the scene.
Colgan was taken to the Central Processing Unit, where she is awaiting a bond hearing.

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore will perform an autopsy Monday to officially determine the cause and manner of the baby's death.
“I’m just heartbroken to learn what happened and shocked, but I'm thinking of the family who was affected and impacted. … It’s just really tragic and shocking,” neighbor Katie Howard told NBC Washington.
