A teacher at Sumner High received a threat against the school on Tuesday.
SUMNER, WA - Sumner High School was dismissed early on Tuesday due to an email threat sent to the school, officials are reporting.
School was dismissed at 9:15 a.m. and after-school athletic activities were canceled. However, a search of the school by Sumner police and Pierce County Sheriff's deputies revealed no explosives or other threats, and school will resume as usual on Wednesday.
Here's the full statement on the incident released by the city of Sumner:
Early this morning a teacher at Sumner High School received an e-mail with threatening comments toward the high school but no individuals. The Sumner School District and Sumner Police Department implemented their established protocols and determined that the best option was to close the high school and send students home out of an abundance of caution. After-school activities and athletics were also cancelled. No other schools in the district were affected.
As part of the investigation, the police department assessed the threat and searched the school with the assistance of a Pierce County explosives detection K-9. At this time the school is safe and will operate on normal schedule tomorrow April 5th. As a precautionary measure, additional police presence will be on campus.
If you have any information that may help the police with their investigation, please call the Sumner Police Tip Line at 253-299-5678.
In 2012, a Sumner High student made a bomb threat, but the district decided to let school proceed as usual.
