Carroll inducts new members to Athletics Hall of Fame

Four new members will be inducted into the Carroll University Athletics Hall of Fame at a reception, brunch and induction ceremony 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 13, 2013, in the Stackner Ballroom of the Campus Center, 101 N. East Ave., Waukesha.

Hall of Fame inductees are:

Brian Bliese, who coached at Carroll for 15 years, from 1985-2000. He was the head men’s and women’s track and field coach, cross country coordinator, and offensive coordinator for the Pioneers football team, where he coached Dave Weber, a National Football League draftee in 1988. Bliese was part of nine conference championships for Carroll – three in men’s track and field, two in women’s track and field, two in women’s cross country and two in football. In cross country, he coached three individual conference champions, more than 50 all-conference honorees, two national qualifiers and one all-American. In track and field, he guided his student-athletes to more than 100 individual conference titles, more than 300 all-conference honors, more than 50 national qualifications and eight all-American performances, including one by Marni Lynn ’01. He lives in Milton, Wis.

Brad Guettel, of Waukesha, Wis., a 2001 Carroll graduate who was a standout athlete in football, indoor track and field, and outdoor track and field from 1997-2001. He was a two-time all-American for the Pioneers football team and a three-time national qualifier in track and field. In football, Guettel was named Midwest Conference Special Teams Player of the Year in 2000 and 2001, while also garnering first-team all-conference and all-region honors. He was named a return specialist all-American by Hewlett Packard and USA Football in 2000 and finished the season ranked No. 11 in the country in kick return average (28 yards). In 2001, Guettel was named all-American by D3football.com, Hewlett Packard and Don Hansen’s Football Gazette. He finished 2001 ranked No. 2 in the country in punt return average (24.3 yards) and No. 18 in kick return average (26 yards). Following his senior year in football, Guettel participated in the College Bowl All-Star Game and was voted Most Valuable Player after scoring two touchdowns. He finished his Carroll track and field career as an 11-time Midwest Conference Champion and earned more than 30 all-conference honors. He also was part of several record-breaking relay teams. Following his career at Carroll, Guettel was an assistant coach for the track and field program from 2002-2012.

Stacey Sobilo Zurek, a 1979 Carroll graduate who was a four-year starter on the Pioneers volleyball and basketball teams from 1975-1979, and was captain for each team her senior season. In volleyball, Zurek was part of a Wisconsin State Championship team as well as a Wisconsin state runner-up. Her team finished third in the Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women regional tournament; she also was an AIAW national tournament participant. Zurek’s basketball teams won the Wisconsin State Championship and qualified for the AIAW regional tournament. Following her Carroll career, Zurek was a successful collegiate volleyball coach. In 1982, she guided the University of Wisconsin-Platteville to a season-long national ranking and finished the season ranked No. 7, while garnering Coach of the Year honors in the Wisconsin Women’s Intercollegiate Athletic Association. Zurek went on to become the head volleyball coach at Purdue University-Calumet, where she compiled the best win-loss record in school history. Her teams earned runner-up honors in the CCAC conference tournament and third-place finishes in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics District 21 tournament. Zurek also claimed Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference Coach of the Year honors in 1998. She lives in Saint John, Ind.

William Lueder, a 1956 Carroll graduate, was a four-year member of the Pioneers football team from 1952-1956. He started every game of his career and played as both an offensive and defensive lineman. Lueder was a highly respected teammate and was voted a team captain. He earned the team’s Most Valuable Player award, while also garnering Little All-American honors. Lueder also was a member of the Pioneers basketball team. In his freshman year, he scored 27 points against an all-American center from the University of Rio Grande. He joined the coaching ranks and enjoyed a successful career in Montello, Wis., where he has been a strong community leader.
