@Pginer-WMF, I put this task in because a user reminded me we'd wanted to do this. A link to the Help doc is a good start, but there's one thing that is unsatisfying here.

The Special:Tags page is actually pretty useful for working with tags. It's linked to prominently in the help page we will be linking to (above), but that makes getting to it a two-step process. Also, there's no way to link from Help directly to the user's home-wiki Special:Tags page, so some users could bet pretty confused (e.g., when they find themselves reading up on Metawiki tags, which are different from their own wiki's).

But if we link directly to the Tags page, then we just have the problem in reverse--the user can't get to Help. Do you have any ideas on the best way to do this?

Giving users instructions to "go to the Special:Tags page of your wiki" definitely breaks the fluency of the process (info may not be available in their language, they need to be aware that they no longer are in their wiki and how to get back to access that page...). I'd prefer to link directly to Special:Tags in their wiki where they have a link on what tags are. I think the hard things to figure out are what tags are and which ones are available. The fact that selecting a tag will filter Recent Changes by that tag, seems more straightforward.

Some approaches that we can consider to improve the proposed approach further:

  • Improve the Special:Tags page to include a template that leads users to (e.g., "how to use tags with recent changes?"), such template will only be shown when users reach the Special:Tags page coming from Recent Changes (e.g., with a specific parameter).
  • If the purpose of accessing Special:Tags is to get more details on specific tags, we can include a help icon on each tag that leads to Special:Tags scrolling the list to where the specific tag is and highlighting it for users to access their links and further information. Although there is not much more information than the one they can read in the Recent Changes menu, links would be clickable.
