Translatable pages flood the search results
Open, MediumPublicBUG REPORT

Description

Steps to replicate the issue (include links if applicable):

  • Search for a word which appears on a translatable page which has lots of translations

What happens?:

The search results are filled with translations of the same page, which makes it hard to find what you are looking for.

Examples:

https://www.wikidata.org/w/index.php?search=merge&ns12=1 has a link to Help:Merge and 19 translations of it. The second page of results has another 20 translations of it. The third page of results has another 18 translations and only two other pages.

https://www.wikidata.org/w/index.php?search=redirect&ns12=1 has a link to Help:Redirects, 18 translations of it and only one other page.

What should have happened instead?:

Translatable pages should be collapsed into a single result (the link could use Special:MyLanguage/) and/or translations in languages which are not the interface language (or one of its fallback languages) should be ranked much lower.

Software version (on Special:Version page; skip for WMF-hosted wikis like Wikipedia):

Thanks @Nikki . Would the "Pages in this language" dropdown satisfy as a workaround?

The level of effort on this looks potentially a bit bigger, and it wouldn't be an area for active work soon, but I did want to understand if the existing functionality helps get the job done.

@Nikki : I'm moving this to our longer term backlog. It seems that we have a workaround. If you need more from the Search Platform team at this point, please ping me directly.

It’s not the same, see T304977#7830235. (Is this task a duplicate of that one? They’re about the same problem, but they propose quite different solutions.)

The solutions proposed in this task is:

  • Deprioritize translation pages from search results
  • Redesign search results so that all translations of single page are "folded" into one item (require redesign of API and UI, which is a huge breaking change)
